We had a bit of a tornado touchdown in the Ottawa Valley a couple years ago that affected power especially for a week + for some, and one local gas station jacked their prices 25%-50% over others. I still haven’t forgotten that and refuse to give them business.

Great idea! Portable sawmills can go to the downed trees and eliminate need to transport trees to a central location. We had a portable sawmill come to our property in black mountain 3 years ago and they turned all our logs into planks to replank our bridges. They worked in a turn around area of our driveway, no bigger than an average to large front yard.

The US makes money in foreign markets. The World Trade Center is in NYC. You make it sound like this is news.

This whole area of the USA( which is the size of at least 4-5 European nations), is very hilly/ mountainous. It is rocky ground with a relatively thin layer of soil. The area is heavily wooded & overlaid with numerous rivers, streams, waterfalls, springs & lakes. Folks have lived here for generations. Gullies & ravines cut through the area & were the first to be settled . 30" of rain, high water tables, rocky slopes, narrow valleys....a recipe for disaster as we can see.

What would they do with cash?

laming "the" govt is not helpful and misinformation is poison. Their state representatives, governor, and first responders are the first line of contact for help and information. And that attitude of one of the workers laying down "we took care of this ourselves" "we don't need it now" is admirable but they are going to need a lot more to clear and rebuild. They have each other and it has always been that way ...what a blessing. Time, money, and no more severe weather will help.

On that note, many came here to escape Florida. We have another storm coming and I’ve mentioned they might need to go to Alabama. Anywhere but western NC. We don’t have enough food in grocery stores here. We just got off cash only here and bank opened but atm was still down. Many counties outside Asheville are not able to take Florida evacuees . Nobody discussing this. They think, it’s fall yall, let’s go mountains to evacuate. Or if they have a house here. They need to be told what to expect , they need to bring their food with them, cash, hotel res or camping res. Anyway, it’s common sense, but I’m afraid many don’t get it. 🤷‍♀️

I've personally worked with FEMA at the local government level and can tell you the approval process is a NIGHTMARE!! Only about 50% of a given claim is approved and the documentation they require is insane......most people will get VERY little from FEMA despite all they say they're doing, this is not opinion, I've personally SEEN it on many occasions. Also they tout these numbers of "millions" for relief, but those millions are what is allegedly made "available" not what disaster victims actually RECEIVE. They receive so little, FEMA is a complete joke.

@camwinston5248 Anyone at this point will be a recovery. Talk to people from Kings Mountain, too, Chimney Rock. Some places have over 100 feet of mountain taking away. Locals are telling me that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people, missing. Entire communities are gone. It's the people higher up than Asheville. Some of my family and friends live in several of these communities. They were really high on mountains, and they were devastated. Imagine if you lived near the rivers and streams that have 40 feet above flooding, and you still get wiped out?
