Really, the span from 1975-1981 was such a productive era for Styx. They dropped 6 great albums in six years: Equinox, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone and Paradise Theater. Their classic rock catalog can stack up against anyone.
I was going to say a great 4 album run from Equinox to Pieces of eight. I think the wheels starting coming off with Cornerstone, and then the engine and transmission blew with Kilroy.
@@nealm6764 I'm not disagreeing with you in principle, but I liked a lot of Cornerstone. Songs like Lights, Why Me, Babe, Boat on a River, Never Say Never, Borrowed Time are good styx songs. Paradise Theater was their last decent album. Rockin' the Paradise, Best of Times, Snowblind, Too much time on my hands are worthwile.
It was totally fun being in High School during that era, with so many amazing bands, and so many amazing songs. There was no such a thing as mainstream garbage back then till MTV and VH1 came to light it was downhill from that point on. Before any of that, we had Don Kirshner's rock concert show which was freaking awesome
So great to see a new generation, WITH HEART, discover great music, it’s OLD, AND NEW! Lucky you! Maybe, when you’re sixty-four, like me, you will have had a lifetime of the greatest music ever created.
I'm 65 years old and lived through all this great music. Watching you react to these bands and songs I grew up with makes me so happy! If you like Tommy Shaw, consider listening to another group he was with, Damn Yankees.
He was amazing in Damn Yankees. Totally different from Styx. I am your age and I am seeing them in May. Few changes in band member due to illness and death. JY and Tommy still play. The man who replaced John on the drums is by drummer magazine voted number one drummer in the world. Fantastic. Chuck doesn't play whole concerts because of serious illness but he is brought out to do a few songs.
And then when your hand trembled or slipped and it made that horrifying SSSKKKEEEERRRAAATTCCHHH!!!" sound? LOL, oh, man, and your friends were like wincing and going "Dude! Easy, man!"
This is why I love watching reaction videos, it is the next best thing to hearing something for the first time again. It's difficult to have a favorite when it comes to Styx, but this one is a little different than the others. Transition shock, right from the beginning.
Lol. You basitds! I was 12 when this came out. We didn't get to pause it and say WTF? when all Hell broke loose from that cool intro. We had to quickly keep up. Love seeing you experience this in your own way!
Great reaction!❤❤❤❤ Some other Styx songs to listen to: "Fooling Yourself" "Too Much Time On My Hands" "Blue Collar Man" "Come Sail Away" "Lady" - 1973 album version (their first breakout hit)
@@paulschirf9259 I appreciated it so much more after I saw them perform it as kind of a Broadway show (Kilroy Was Here). It was amazing! They created a whole show with extravagant sets for each song. It’s probably on You-Tube somewhere. I saw it back in ‘83 in Berkeley.
@@valogden American top 40 can be heard on 106.7 Fm here Lake Oswego, Oregon. (I Heart Radio) on Sundays! I hope you and granddaugher Enjoy! Kasem - 8-18-1984 Today.
Love watching you really feel the music of my youth and be moved by it as we were. Styx was my first concert, the Paradise Theatre tour. I was 16 or 17. To this day when Renegade comes on the radio, the volume goes UP! Keep rocking!
I remember sitting in the car with my dad and step family heading to Six Flags for the day when this song came on the radio. All of us kids immediately started singing along, pounding on the back of the seats with that opening beat, and then screaming, “Daaaaaamn!” and then just rocking out with the rest of the song. Top 40 radio in the ‘70s was terrific!
That intro is so fun❤ I couldn't wait for you to hear it😂 . I didn't think your eyes could open that wide. I got this album for Christmas when I was a baby (13 yrs old)😂. This is one of my favorites on this album. ❤
That's exactly how I listened to Renegade when it came out in '79. My friend had the Pieces of Eight tape and I made her blast it repeatedly from her cool Z-28. The good old days when rock stars were talented musicians who could write songs, play instruments, and sing!!! #Styx#Tommy Shaw#Renegade#GreatSong#RealMusic #SuperbTalent
I absolutely love your reaction to this friggin amazing song! My favorite on this album! I really hope you will enjoy finding all their phenomenal songs as you venture into Styx land 💜
It was tough growing up back in the day because while you wanted the radio at full blast you also wanted to be able to turn it up when something like this came on
This is the song that they pull out when we need a big play, and it seems to be a little magical. Need a sack? Renegade. Need a turnover? Renegade. Need Troy Polamalu to leave his body, speak to Jesus, and astral project his spirit into a player on the field? Renegade.
I saw them when this song came out! This song was so cool live! They had a big movie screen with an animation of the renegade trying to out ride the law on horseback !
Millionth & ONE and still a great listen!!!!! I actually can not imagine my life without Styx being a part of it. When I hear or listen, it takes me to many moments throughout my life. Having the cassette tape & my Walk man w/headphones to get through a hard works day to a fun get together on sterio!!
I used to love this song. They used to play at the roller skating rink back in 79. Two of my four brothers and sisters had the album. I remember I was in 7th grade and I sold magazines for my junior high. The top seller would earn a pair of tickets to a Styx concert. I was not top seller, but I received a giant Sugar Daddy Slowpoke sucker and a hot air popcorn popper.
Great reaction, this was fun! As so many others have said, the sign of a great reactor is making us feel like we're hearing the song for the first time.
I can see myself with my sister dancing in front of our huge living room stereo (the size of a piece of furniture) we all had in those days with this song blasting.
This song brings back so many memories of highschool and still team. Styx was a band I listened to as often I did Queen. Loved both bands. When they were here a couple of weeks ago and I went with my sons and grandson we had so much fun. I have the cutest videos of my 3 yr old grandson dancing and trying to sing along. More great memories of Styx now!
Oh my goodness. There's so much to listen to. I'm sure people have already suggested Come Sail Away. Absolutely essential. Also, for a slightly different listen, I highly recommend Boat On A River. I've always loved it's sound.
A lot of people are recommending "Come Sail Away". Thought I should warn you that there are a lot of "Radio Edit" versions floating around RU-vid. Back in the 1970's and 80's, many radio stations played shorter versions of longer songs so that they could squeeze "more music" in per hour where really all they were doing was playing more songs, but the shorter versions of each. Record companies also released those short versions as singles. The full version, found on the album, clocks in at 6:10 and has a long first verse and an instrumental part before the second verse. The single version cuts out the second part of the first verse and the instrumental part.
I love to watch young people discovering the music we were raised on and loved, but took for granted! We had no idea the 70’s era had the BEST MUSIC OF ALL TIME 😆💜 If you want to hear another epic jam, Pink Floyd Live Echoes in Pompeii, the LIVE VERSION VIDEO, I really think you would LOVE it! It was the album before Dark Side of the Moon, which I saw performed live in Tampa Stadium 🥰💜 I didn’t even know it existed until about a year ago 😳
I was 9 when this song came out. Imagine hearing for the first time when rock bands were still experimenting with big and bold sound but had a few things figured out. Plus, many radio listeners cranked up the volume because of the whispering then lunged for the knob out of pure shock
I think I took all this great music for granted growing up because I expected that bands would use every drop of their talent, heart and soul into each song and album to make it as good as they possibly could! Massive talent from many bands like Styx was just how I thought it was done and probably always would be! Foreigner is amazing too if you haven’t checked them out! Boston and Queen which I think you have. Scorpions and so many more for you to discover! Enjoy!
"You want more? We got more!" You get more in concert - check out a live version. You're now deep in the heart of the Styx catalog (my next suggestions are in the comments of your reaction of "Suite: Madame Blue"). "Fooling Yourself" was the song that got me into Styx back in 1977. Enjoy your exploration - there's many more. Deep cuts from "The Grand Illusion" album are fan favorites "Man In The WIlderness" and "Castle Walls". After I got the "Pieces Of Eight" album(with "Queen Of Spades" and "Blue Collar Man"), I explored their earlier stuff - a whole new world of music.
It's like going on a carnival ride, and back when it came out, they did play it on county fair rides. A great memory for me, I still have the 45 kickin around.
My weakness!! 😂 Even better front/center, saw these guys 5 times!! Styx performed in my hometown and I lived in the big city...WTH?? 😯 It's pure joy watching you SalvoG!! 🥳👍🏽 I will listen to anything Styx up to Paradise Theater. ✔
I was 11 years old when I "borrowed" this 45 from my older brother's friend Mark. It was the hardest-rocking record I owned at the time (until I found Love Gun by Kiss). I still have that 45. I owe you one Mark.
@@davidbordonaro1631 Well, I remember when I got my first CD player in '88 it was possible to find CD singles. They didn't last long, and CD's took over from vinyl. So I'd say the popularity of vinyl 45's probably died off in 1990. So you'd need to be probably 40 or older to remember them. Bigger question, when Sheryl Crowe sings "got my 45 on, so I can rock on" is she talking about a record, sunscreen, or her Smith & Wesson???
A lot of good hard rock and songs on this album pieces of eight renegade is just one of many. songs that nobody ever heard about, Great White Hope even Lord of the rings. Renegade biggest hits on the billboards for STYX on this album.Knock off socks in the beginning with the heart beating pump that starts blasting you into a iconic riff. What an opener right? This album and the Grand illusion put them in the next level.
You seem surprised that these 70s bands could not only play their instruments but SING TOO. Never hold the same beat or tune for the whole damn song. Albums great from start to finish. I feel bad for you first timers, but envy that you can hear them for the first time. If only you could hear them for the first time AGAIN.
3 lead singers, 2 lead guitarists. STyX is my number 1 favorite American band. The live stuff from 1996 Return to Paradise is a must... check out... ; ))
