We're SO excited to add Coturnix quail to our homestead for both meat and egg production. Follow along as we build out a simple, modern quail coop for them to live in using all reclaimed materials. This is our own design has plenty of room for a dozen birds to live comfortably and provide us with our daily eggs.
Let us know in the comments below what you think of this design, or if there are ways we could improve it!

This Quail coop is precious, Wow they must be happy with their now home, I love when you said "it could stand the kids test" 😂. I love that this coop is well thought of. They will definitely love that they are not caged in, its not a small enclosure, Any poultry is safe in a spacious coop as this.👍👍👍 And I appreciate the team work. You ' ve got a beautiful space too. Good looking build. I'd need a secure door latch because raccoons would easily open your simple wood one. But other than that one easy upgrade, this is a very nice quail hutch.

Lovely enclosure. Could you tell me what you've put on the left and right side, bedding? Sand? It was too dark to see. That's where you have the solid flooring, how is that working out? I'm wondering about all the poop and cleaning chores. But I do like the idea of them not having to walk on wire all the time.
@Slowsteading
@Slowsteading Год назад
Thanks so much for checking it out! Yes that is sand I've put down on the solid floors to give the birds an area to dust bathe as well as a clean area to lay their eggs. I've since modified the coop to have a solid floor throughout-the droppings were just falling on the ground below and getting stinky. I'm now using a deep-litter approach of bedding the coop with a mixture of wood shavings, sand and some biochar to keep odors down. I stir it up and add some new bedding once in a while, but It's been a few months without having to fully change it out and next to no odor at all.

Cheers, thanks for the kind words! I totally agree, the startle response is not some serious epidemic killing quail left and right 😂 My quail rarely (if ever) startle like that and all the breeders I know in my area haven't any issues with it either, so I'm not too concerned. Hope you enjoy your quail and their tasty little eggs in the near future 👌

Very nice and simple cage. The waterer nipples are the best kind I've ever tried for my quails as well. 2 things I need to modify would be temperature holding for our Northeastern winter and the automatic egg rolling out features.

Thanks so much! We found we didn't need any auxiliary heat in winter, the quail managed just fine down to -10C. We simply replaced the frozen water with warm water once or twice a day.

Very nice looking. However - Cedar is bad for quail, The ceiling is to high inside and when they pop ( get startled or hyper and fly up) they can break their necks on top. Quail cages inside should be 12" or under, or 6' and over. The wire (which is actually 1/2" (you stated 1/4")) should be a bigger gage or coated ( you can add a layer of plastic hexagon chicken fencing over the wire to help). Otherwise they will get foot cuts and bumble foot when they are grown. Lastly the metal roof is like a oven plate in the sun and needs a insulating layer under it - plywood is fine for this.

Thanks for all the great tips!

Cedar lumber is fine, cedar shavings are the big no-no. Lumber is made from western red and shavings are made from eastern white. Western red does not have the compounds that make eastern white dangerous.

Are you keeping them in that coop only? I know you can't exactly free range them, just seems a bit small?
@Slowsteading
@Slowsteading Год назад
Yes, quail only need approximately 1 sq ft. to be comfortable. This coop is 3' x 6', or 18 sq ft-enough for up to 18 birds. I currently only have 6 hens in there since we processed the roosters. In nature these are flock animals that typically live their entire lives within and around the same bush, so they prefer a cozier space to feel safer. The reduced space requirements (compared to chickens) are one of the reasons I really like raising the coturnix quail 😄
@chascapwell2041
@chascapwell2041 Год назад
I've seen people mentioning free ranging quail. And they aren't hard to catch since they're effectively flightless. I'd never do it because quail and chickens should NOT mix. Chickens carry diseases that are trivial for them but will devastate quail.
@Slowsteading
@Slowsteading Год назад
@@chascapwell2041 I can see the appeal of free ranging them, but I have yet to see it in practice. Good to know about them intermingling with chickens though-our hens free range so that would be no bueno for the quail.

Thanks so much for checking out the quail coop build! I'm always on the lookout for material which takes a bit of time but is definitely worth it. I monitor the local classifieds and marketplace for people getting rid of offcuts, old scrap, or or old projects like decks/fences etc. When local trades are doing work in my neighborhood I ask for the old materials they are discarding (this is how I obtained all the roofing materials for this and the chicken coop). And I let me friends know I am always looking and happy to take any unwanted material. I helped a friend dismantle an old shed on his property and was offered some of the material in exchange. 1/4" mesh is too small for droppings. Poop tray underneath lets you compost and put the poop where YOU want it. Maybe turn wood floored areas into sandboxes, they love it and generally lay their eggs there.

No predators in your neck of the woods? Coop is really nice and cozy, but not really sturdy. We have had about 60 quail last year and we downsized to 12. Our coop is in the garage. We have to many animals that would just love to bust open the coop and chomp on our girls. So in the garage it is.
