In this video I experiment with beginning an abstract mixed media painting with mark making (vs. my usual go-tos, paint and collage). I began this exercise after participating in Judy Woods ( / judywoods_artist ) and Nicola Bennett's ( / nicolabennettart ) drawing workshop. They are amazing artists and I continue to be inspired by their respective processes. My intention was to focus on mark making at the beginning and carry it through these paintings so that mark making would still be front and center at the end of the exercise.
Materials used: acrylic paint, gesso, graphite, ink, and collage.

Yourself and Judy are the two tutors I most enjoy.. As tutors first but it was presentation that first drew me... relaxed style, music, and the gentile honesty. It makes the whole experience a treat to look forward to. Thank you so much. Blessings to you and your loved ones ❤

I did the same workshop and really liked the layering to get to the end result. The other thing I became aware of, was it was very clear to me that a painting was not finished, but ending a.set of layers could be very satisfying. It seems that apprehension is a part of the finishing. A point where you have to let go of making it right or perfect perhaps? I still have 2 unfinished pieces from the workshop because I can’t get past the apprehension with them. Funnily enough the one I thought was rubbish finished beyond my expectations.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
I 100% agree that there is a point where we need to let go and let it be what it is. It took me a while to feel confident that as the artist, I (and I alone) get to decide when a painting is done. No one else has to agree with me or like it, but I’m the only one who can decide when it’s done. The more I paint, the more opportunities I get to call a painting done/not done and all that practice helps give me even more confidence in my own creative judgement. I also find that time helps - if I’m unsure about a painting or even if I don’t like it, setting it aside for a while and coming back to it gives me a clearer perspective on it. Often, something I thought I didn’t like, is more beautiful than I realized early on because I was too close to it. Keep showing up and getting your practice in - enjoy the process! ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for sharing your process. I am taking the class with Judy & Nicola, too. It’s been fun and I liked watching another example. Playing is always the best! I love your pages! I start in a few different ways. Sometimes I start with collage either on the whole page or in random spots. Sometimes I start with paint and sometimes I start with mark-making. But all three are included at some point. I do not usually struggle with that inner critic. Maybe because my goal is to feed my inner peace and find joy. It is all about the process for me and if I had fun, it is a win for me. Thanks again for sharing.

These are lovely, Jackie, thank you for sharing . I always appreciate those who share, we can learn something from everyone and seeing someone's process, colour choices, even hearing what they struggle with can help a lot. I like to let videos like this one of yours play a second or third time while I paint......I watch the first time.....then have the 'reminders' when I hear the artist speaking to help stir the creativity while I paint.....the only voice I try to ignore is my meddling husband....if I hear 'why don't you paint this (inset random object here)' one more time, I might run away screaming! 😂I have lost count of how many times I have told him I have no idea what I will end up with when I sit down to paint.....that's where the magic is!
@jackieschomburgart

Oh so glad you enjoyed this video, Ali! Keep listening to the voices encouraging you! One of my favorite “rules” from an art class was a no comment rule. We were not allowed to comment on anyone’s work (even our own!). No compliments, questions (“is that a tiger?”), or criticism was allowed. The comments of others are related to their own experience and has nothing to do with your art. It’s a tough thing to separate from as the artist - comments feel so personal and towards us/our art - but asking others close to us to practice not commenting on our work can help them (not feel like they need to “help” 🤦‍♀️) and us because we can focus on OUR thoughts and feelings about our own work. It took me a while for my husband to adopt the no comment rule, but he got it and it’s helpful all around 👍 Just some food for thought 😉❤️

Oh thank you so much, Becky - you just made my day! ❤️❤️❤️ I really enjoy seeing how other artists work - especially artists whose styles I like. They work very differently than I typically do, so it’s been fun to “try on” parts of their process to see how it translates to my style. So glad to have you watching this channel! ❤️

Another super fantastic video. I always used to start with paint. Then I started doing marks first. Only kind of recently have I started with collage first. Now I jump around with whatever mood I’m in. Thanks for sharing. These look great.

Thanks Carl ❤️ I like to jump around too. It helps the “needs structure” part of me feel like I have a familiar routine/process *and* it helps the spontaneous/rebellious part of me feel like I can still do what I want when I want to do it 🙌🏻🌈🤗

I loved watching your video and how the art transforms throughout. As I’m watching, I see certain areas that are gorgeous, and then you start covering it. My mind says, “Noooo, don’t cover that! It’s beautiful!” 😂 I am fairly new to this type of creating and don’t understand why so much of the beautiful marks end up getting painted over not seen. Do you mind explaining please?
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart 8 месяцев назад
Thank you so much! Answering why some parts get painted over is very different for each artist. Some artists paint over marks they don’t like and leave the rest. Others prefer minimalist compositions and cover everything except the bit they want to highlight. I don’t have a formula other than to say keep painting and try painting over parts and see how it goes. Perhaps it’s just not part of your style as an artist. That’s one of my favorite parts of art is that every artist is uniquely themselves ❤️❤️❤️

So cool Jackie -- I'd love to see individual sections of these -- I guess that's my aesthetic, I tend to work small & with fewer elements (which is part of why I so enjoy watching your process). I'm still experimenting with finding patterns for working but more often than not it starts with marks then paint/ink and finally collage -- I *love* how you use that wide black marker though and the kind of marks you make -- thanks for all you share, learning from/with you all the time ❤
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Thanks! By “individual sections” do you mean you’d like to see each one split up into 4 quadrants or something along those lines? If so, I agree they would be interesting to see that way. I love the compositional surprises that come from diving up a larger piece into smaller pieces! Who am I kidding? I like *most* surprises - especially when there’s cake involved 😉 Thank you so much for sharing your process and for your kind words ❤️❤️❤️
@amherst88
@amherst88 Год назад
@@jackieschomburgart For the pieces you usually work on to divide I really enjoy watching both the initial process & what happens after they're separated -- for these two, though, there was so much going on I would like to look at even smaller sections -- I don't think it's possible to do such a thing properly on video but if I were in front of them I would take some kind of a limiting device (like a mat with a small opening) and move it around the pieces to just look at small sections, places where colors/shapes/lines intersect -- for some reason that's the world I live in :)

I really enjoyed this video. I start either with collage (especially on smaller pieces) or with marks as my 1st layer. I love using ink in my 1st layer also. I too struggle to stay in my right brain while I'm painting, and probably always will.

I usually start making marks with oil pastels. I then fill in interesting shapes I see while trying to keep in mind one of the 12 abstract compositions. This is usually my first layer. I do this with watercolor but I have done it with acrylic also.
@jackieschomburgart
@jackieschomburgart Год назад
Ooooh! So you use the oil pastels as a resist for the watercolors? Great idea - I’ve done that before but never as part of a repeated process or focused on composition. I’m so curious - I’d love to see your work sometime! ❤️

Sometimes I start out with alot of texture(m.paste scraped around) and then splash some glazes or heavier paint on top and smush it around and scrape into that to get some marks going on...Other times a fluid wash of inks and sprinkle in some organic material and let dry to see what emerges!!
