Castaways is a documentary series chronicling the successful rehabilitation program of inmates training unwanted dogs for re-introduction or adoption, while highlighting the plight that both prisoners and dogs face and how an unlikely union brings out a change in character of both man and beast - Each trying to save and serve one another.
The results are life changing for the prisoner, dog and recipient.
Esther was severely abused in a puppy mill before being rehabilitated through the Prison trained K-9 Companion Program.

Breaks my heart to see Esther like she was at the beginning of the video but what a transformation she had after spending time with Jason. This entire video made me cry, especially at the end when he gave her up. Sweet little doggie didn't want to say goodbye.

I worked at a prison that had a dog program and can say without a doubt that these kind of programs DO provide amazing rehabilitation for both the offender and the dogs. I adopted a dog from our program and she served as my service dog for a long time. She had made an amazing transformation, and her trainer would constantly ask me for updates about her once she was home. If you are considering a new addition to your family, please check around your area and support these programs! You will not regret it.

This is a fantastic program, they are not only dogs, they are angles with four legs, they always manage to make people happy, always happy and grateful for you, always there for you and only wants one thing in return.. Love! I love dog/animals so much.. Like if you do too and is there a way that we can support this program?

I'm excited for these dogs including inmates' without their help these dogs would have not survived. I have two dogs I love more than people neither of my children want for anything congratulations keep it up

The difference in just 5 weeks is amazing. At the rescue, she was laying pancake flat, peeing out of fear at the slightest sound or touch. At the prison, Jason worked her with another more confident dog to ease her anxiety, the atmosphere in the K-9 housing unit is more relaxed which helped her to relax. It's ironic that Esther had to go to prison to be set free from her anxiety! At the end of 5 weeks, you could see a sweet,happy, playful dog; a dog that resembled a labrador retriever happy to chase Kong toys all day,receive pets and snuggle in her trainer's arms.

After 14 yrs with Ester, we finally lost her this last weekend. She has been a joy in our lives for many years and we miss her very much. We also lost Roxy a few months ago, she was about 13. We are extremely sad to have lost both of our buddys in such a short time, but they had great lives and enriched our lives tremendously. I wish we could tell Jason from the prison training how much she has meant to us over the years and how blessed we are to have had Ester with us

Great Idea by one of the Commenters on littlethings.com: "John Woods: wonderful program but I agree with Marsha and as Jason states - "she didn't want to go!". Maybe the program could be extended so that inmates take dogs such as Esther into aged facilities and hospices as companion dogs for the sick and elderly. This may allow the dogs to stay with their carers - just a thought."

This is an update, long overdue, on Ester. We adopted her from the prison program and she, along with her buddy Roxy, is a beautiful happy dog. WE have had her for about 7yrs or so, and altho she is shy and a little skittish around new events, she is a happy relaxed girl. She really loves our two young grandkids. She is gettin older now, we estimate 9+ and is a huge part of our lives and hearts. Cant imagine being without our loving girls. Huge thanks to this program and the Prison K-9 program for what you have done for us and countless others, both adopters and inmates.

As much as this is about dogs it's also about the inmates who in spite of being shunned by society for any number of reasons, show love and compassion and are still very much human and need help as well to become good productive members of society again.

This is an amazing story. I have two rescue dogs myself, and I know what it is like to take in a dog that has been abandoned by their owner. I was fortunate, my dogs only needed love. Some dogs, like Esther, need so much more. I'm so proud of the people who are involved in the rescue programs, and I'm happy that someone is telling their story.

Ladies what a wonderful opportunity for both the dogs and prisoners. Its emotionally charged work but keep up the excellent role you play in saving the dogs and giving the Prisoners a very worthwhile purpose. I cried too!

Esther immediately reminded me of our dog, Rocket. We found her abandoned a few days before Christmas. She was less than a year old and completely untrained and terrified. The process of helping her became a bonding experience for our family, and she was a wonderful family member until she passed away last year at 16. Thanks for sharing this story of Esther and Saving Castaways.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, BEYOND THANKFUL WORDS. TEARS OF JOY run down my face. Rescued Men, Women and Dogs, saving each other, changing each other's lives for the best so, that each could become great. They learn to trust, love and see the potential in themselves and the other. This is one of the greatest programs I've heard of and it's successful. Ah Esther what a lucky dog you are. My Scout was a castaway until rescued by Project Pooch at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon. She is the best dog ever, the perfect dog and my family cannot imagine life without her. Well done Saving Castaways. You save not just the dogs but allow the prisoners to save themselves. Great job.

This program is phenomenal! Every prison should have it! The benefits for abused and unwanted dogs are myriad. It helps give a chance they wouldn't have had otherwise. And because it also benefits the prisoners, it's a win-win!

Hanna Mens Agreed. These prisoners will not become bitter and resentful, they will realize that people outside trust them and have faith in them. They may get their sentence reduced, at the next parole hearing they may receive a release, they may finish their life in prison as a good inmate who doesn't do drugs, drink prison alcohol, or be abusive to their fellow inmates.

This is a great program, not only for the dogs, but for the inmates as well. I'm a CO and can tell you that a very large majority of inmates would benefit from this type of program and would do a great job rehabilitating these dogs. They might be *use your on adjective* criminals but put a dog in front of them and you'll see they're just as human as you and me.

That was do wonderful to watch. Such a precious dog so close to being euthanised through no fault of its own due to sick, evil, cruel excuses for human beings. How many were not so lucky. Breaks my heart. Thank you to everyone involved in firstly rescuing her and then turning her life around. God bless you all.

Nice work all round - I am genuinely pleased to see just how good these inmates are towards the former shelter dogs but I would also like to see the inmates move towards a better life when they have finished serving their time.
