In 1.8 strength gave you a +130% damage multiplier per level instead of +3 base damage, which means he deals +260% damage with strength II. And in 1.8 weakness reduces your attack damage by 0.5 hp per hit, which means he deals 1.5 less damage with weakness III. That means strength greatly overcomes the weakness effect and still manages to be broken.

Weakness in 1.8 reduces damage by 0.5 hp every level. Since it's weakness 3 it reduces 1.5 damage which is basically nothing when added to strength 2
