Footage of 1A9X1 Special Missions Aviation Airmen during preflight, ammo loading, and live fire training aboard an AC-130U Spooky Gunship at aerial gunnery range, Eglin Air Force Base, FL. The Spooky is equipped with a 105mm cannon, 40mm cannon, and a 25mm Gatling gun. Plus, it is equipped with sophisticated sensor, navigation and fire control systems to provide surgical firepower or area saturation during extended loiter periods, at night and in adverse weather. The sensor suite consists of a television sensor, infrared sensor and radar. These sensors allow the gunship to visually or electronically identify friendly ground forces and targets any place, any time. The Spooky Gunship has a crew of pilot, co-pilot, navigator, fire control officer, and electronic warfare officer (five officers) - flight engineer, TV operator, infrared detection set operator, loadmaster, and four aerial gunners (eight enlisted).

I've operated a C-17 cockpit, but have to say that my all-time favorite aircraft (other than my dad's old Mooney 201) has to be the C-130.

The air frames of these AC-130U's most have a reduced flight time due to the shock of the heavy weapons firing. Who ever thought up this concept is a true evil genius.

All you do is reload and do maintenance on the AC-130. You don't shoot. The crew chief shoots

+Old glory the crew chief doesn't shoot the sensor operators shoot. the crew chief isn't a crew position on the ac 130

Not all special missions aviators work in an AC-130. Some work in HH-60 Pave Hawks, or other attack helicopters, and planes. It depends on what aircraft you get assigned. You might get to shoot a lot of people with a minigun in a Pave Low, but you might get assigned to a cargo plane instead, and you'll be in charge of getting all cargo, and supplies on board, or you may be put in a rescue aircraft where you have to help rescue fellow soldiers, airmen, marines etc. In this case, if you're put in an AC-130, you'll be doing reload and maintenance.

Being on a AC-130 is a bad ass job, think of it as being an artillery crewman but in the Air lol.

Kills me how the Air Force (I'm retired AF) has to change names all the time. They were AERIAL GUNNERS and were for years. Once they separated maintenance (you used to have to be a Weapons Troop prior to applying as a gunner) and aircrew duties, they are "Special". I know lots of gunners. Even they laugh about it.

***** Its not really anything you can prepare for. Its a test where there are blocks of circles and you have to distinguish which circles look like they are sticking out. You either you see it or you dont. I have 20/20 but I still didnt pass.

The aircraft circles around a target, a sensor operator then aims the weapon using a joystick on a computer screen, he then uses the fire control like a joystick in a jet firing a missle
