Angus was once asked what it was like being one of the best guitarists in the world. He replied that he had no idea and that he wasn't even the best guitarist in AC/DC! RIP to the heart and soul of AC/DC, the true "sound" of the band, Malcolm Young. Interesting note, the new album, Pwr Up, is dedicated to Malcolm and he receives co-writing credit on the songs on the album.
I'd agree with the album being about that, but there's also another way to look at the lyrics of this song that is more in context and that is being "in the black" is an old school accounting term. Books used to have losses written in red ink and everything else including profits in black ink, so when you were sinking and under water, you "were in the red" but when you were doin good you were in the black. This song is about being "Back In Black" The song is ALL about being back baby ! On the upswing ! Being on top again ! BA-A-A-A, BA-A-A-A, BACK IN BLACK ! ! !
Your right, when the members were told he died the group said no way he was close to death many times so they said he can't be dead. But sad it was true this time.
You are right as ever, Jayy, this was their come back song after losing original lead singer, so it is honor of former lead singer, but also new lead singer taking up the new reigns.
I wasn’t allowed to listen to a AC/DC in school! I recently saw a cover band who covered more of Bon Scott years and I was shocked that I didn’t know much of it because they didn’t put it on the radio in America ! I feel like a teenager all over again with so many new albums to listen to After all these years, they still have the best sound around
replying to your 3 yr old comment- yea.. When I heard it back in -80, I had the same face as Jayy here. This is the only LP I actually had to buy another copy of as my first was played to the bone. what an absolute BEAST of a record. I was worried after Bon died.. how could Acca-Dacca ever go on (and top) Highway to Hell.. well.. yea.. Open Wide
Story goes when Brian was told he had a singing audition, he rang his management to find out who the band was. The receptionist said "I can't say their name so I'll spell it for you...... 'acdc' " He was down there like a shot!! :))
@@guitarman8462 Ahhhh....I know - I Meant it More as a LOL Kinda Thing. It Just Always LOOKED - SO BIG on Him - Esp in the the early days When he was a Much YOUNGER Malcom Young. It's All Good Though - I am Not Arguing - You ARE Correct. It Just seemed Funny in the same way as it Was Probably "Taller" than Him. - Be Well - Have A GR8 Christmas - May You & Yours Stay HEATHY & HAPPY!!
@@shannonschaerer1010 I know you're not arguing 😉. Those are more for blues & jazz bc their fat hollow tone . When it comes to guitars , it's all in the type of body , hollow or solid body etc etc . Just like chuck berry , his was a hollow body . And then of course there's semi - hollow . Pick ups are also important. You have single coil or humbuckers . 🤙🎸😉
Usually after singers passed on and other singers come on music usually isn't the same but I have to admit Back in Black was one of the best comebacks of all time
@@brandonlock6464 If anyone can do it, why haven't they written all the classic songs that Angus and Malcolm have written over the decades? I'm over 50, and to this day, I have also not seen another guitarist play and move like Angus, especially when he was younger. His whole body became the instrument, and at times, he was like a man possessed. Prodigy.
@@frankrizzo4460 He has been, in a way, like our Mozart, as many of us, I'm sure, have looked in amazement at Angus like the people of Mozart's day must have looked in amazement at him. A pure spectacle to watch.
That is the very 1st album Brian sang on. It was a tribute album to Bon Scott after his untimely death in February of 1980. Probably the best comeback in Rock N Roll history and they sold millions of copys... Long live AC/DC!
I do belive this is the second most sold album ever you have that look when you first listened yo this band like you where not ready great job keep it up
Also, the name of the album is so important, it’s called back in black, because they were in mourning over losing Bon Scott, and that was the first album they did, so they were back in black, basically back in mourning
Back in Black is their album dedicated to Bon Scott who died in 1980. Their new album is dedicated to Malcom Young who died in 2017 and many consider as the greatest rhythm guitarist ever. Check out some of Angus' live solos during concerts....pretty amazing!
Classic rock!!!!! I was 10 when this came out and my brother who was 17 got me into it. Forever grateful to be a rock fan cos of him! Angus Young and Malcolm on the bass come from Glasgow, Scotland originally. My city!!

You nailed it. Back at the end of the seventies when I was in my teens the two best live acts on the scene in London were AC/DC and Motörhead. Bon Scott , ACDC’s singer died when they toured the U K and this was the first post Bon single. This was probably the best post Bon AC/DC song and it still sounds great 40 years later. Great song, great band, great review. I still have the vinyl of this and it revives so many great memories from my youth. Thanks for reviewing this.
My favorite rock group of all time. I saw them in 1984 @ the SF Cow Palace on the For Those About To Rock tour w/ my cousin Robert (RIP Cuz), my mom Naomi and her best friend Margo. I was 14 yrs old. My mom's friend was running late and I was getting mad because this was my first ever concert. When she showed up she mentioned that the reason she was late was because she was in a car accident (ooops sorry Margo). We made it to the concert during the opening act and back in those days it was all general admission so we had the "Bob Uker" seats way in the back and to top it off I had this concrete pillar blocking my view. I looked at my cousin, he looked me and we said "F it lets go". So we went down and pushed our way towards the stage. We managed to push our way to about 4 rows from stage right and when we looked up Angus Young was playing while riding on one of the roadies shoulders and came into the crowd right by us. My cousin and I got to pat him on the back and high five him. It was freaking AWESOME. I am 51 yrs old now and will ALWAYS remember that as one of the BEST moments of my rocking life. Matter of fact I still have my concert ticket. Long live Rock n Roll.
Excellent Band.... Excellent Song Chose girl, this will keep you Rocking that's a fact!! Seen them in concert in 1976 with original lead singer Bon Scott!! Fresno, Ca at Warner's Theater 🎭
It became Back in Black because of Bon Scott. The band was gonna quit and go their ways after Bon passed away. A family member asked them to try it again for Bon. They found Brian Johnson and they were back but in a black place without Bon. It was difficult to move on. I read some history in books, some documentary videos, tributes from other artists and on the autobiography of a band - AC/DC
Yeah! When recording the album, it was time to do the vocal tracks and the lead singer Bon Scott passed away, so Brian Johnson came in and did the vocal tracks. The entire album is an homage to Bon Scott!
In 1982, when cds first came out, I moved out from my parents and got my first apartment. The stereo I bought had an early CD player. I bought two cds (to start). Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon and this. Cds were purported to have the best sound quality, and these were two albums that I felt needed to be heard in the best possible way (other than live). Great stuff. Great reaction. Btw, I love Angus. 💜
AC/DC was already gaining momentum through the 70s with Bon Scott singing, songs like T.N.T., Dirty Deeds, Let There Be Rock, Highway to Hell, and many more. When Bon Scott died in 1980, they found Brian Johnson and recorded the album Back in Black. As near as I can find, the album is the 2nd best selling album of any kind of all time.
After Bonn Scott’s death they brought in Brian Johnson because, aside from his talent, he sounded like Bonn Scott as far as his pitch, etc. Back in Black kinda represented the return of Scott’s essence and spirit to the band after his unexpected passing. It also represented the fact that, although their lead singer was gone, the band was still there and “Back in Black.”
Someone once described Brian Johnson's voice as being like 'a cement-mixer full of babies' and I can't think of a better analogy. With the exception of rhythm guitarist (and de facto group leader) Malcolm Young, this line-up currently has a hit album out - 40 years on from this track.
I have listened to AcDc since I was probaly 3rd grade. And I do not always watch the videos when I listen to music. And I know peeps with production co. And I definitely know quite a few of guitarist and peeps who jam and I envy most of th÷m and also feel no one gives a muck about my opinion or even care ....but I love all kinds of music and people but right now I am truly struggling to believe in self and not make or measure my success or bank account or life experience or changes but I know I do enjoy being and seeing achievements for all and recognizing them for doing so well. I really I am nothing compared to most. Nothing more than an ameba In a Petra dish.
1980...40 years ago. "Back in Black" was the first ACDC recording with their new singer...Brian Johnson. right after Bon Scott died.....he's been with them ever since.
Welcome aboard, fam. Fact; we joke that “AC/DC” has only one song, and it is a BANGER, and they have been blessing us with it for years.” Be safe, be well. 🖤
Their original singer, Bon Scott, died a year before this came out. Brain Johnson replaced him. They were Back in Black because they were in funeral/homage dress for Bon, so to speak. The album is a tribute to him. And yes, this band is fantastic. SOOO much to check out. Try some Bon stuff like "Highway To Hell".
1981 and we cranked this in our cruiser cars- 69 Camaro, 78 Firebird, 70 Chevelle/Novas. Better get the big '6x9's' and Kraco power booster equalizers set to MAX to jam the 8 track because it was serious way cool, Junior :)
BTW- "Back in black" is a term used in business terms saying a company is back in profitability (as opposed to being in the red), but you're right, the black is also used in this case in the sense of a funeral as AC/DC's lead singer Bon Scott had died before the making this album and is whom the record was dedicated.
oh yeah the back in black was the band coming back after Bon Scott dying this was when Brian Johnson took over. It was basically saying the band was back after Bon died. They were continuing what they made with Bon and still around to do what they do!
The whole album as well especially this song is a tribute too there late singer The Great Bon Scott (:. A tribute too how he was as a great singer and performer and how he lived his life as a Bad Ass (: And of course Angus is just everything on the guitar (:
