Thank you so much! My physical therapist(s) didn't help much , but this really gave me relief. I've had a popping clavicle for 20 yrs and doctors always told me not to worry about it. I see I'm a bit late to this party, but if this comment is seen, I'd love to hear some more about this spesific injury. Things like the severity of it (a small sprain or partial, even full AC separation), time elapsed since the accident, relevant things in general. Thank You very much for the video, and for your time if you find some to share extra details. Cheers!

this injury really sucks. i collided with one of my teammates in a hockey game about 2 years ago and i still haven’t gotten it back to 100% i’d literally do anything to have the full range back 😩 working out is so aggravating with it. i’m constantly getting fatigued in that area and it just sucks

Dear Mike DeVincent, I'm sorry to hear about your injury. Unfortunately, much of what is gonna get you better involves hands-on treatment that must be done in person... After a thorough evaluation by a qualified practitioner. Injuries can be very different from one person to the next, and therefore can require very different treatment plans. The best thing for you to do is find a well-rated licensed physical therapist/physiotherapist in your area that has advanced training in manual therapy. And though this video is about manual therapy, therapeutic exercises are also vital in fully recovering from this injury ... even if it happened year ago. If you are in the Austin, Texas area, we can help discuss your injury and the best steps to getting better quickly via a free consultation at our clinic: www.carterpt.com/free-20-minute-discovery-session/

I have a grade 2 separation on right shoulder since 2003. Never any real problems with it. However, about 5 months ago. While moving some heavy object and letting it down. I felt a weird stretching sensation and then pain. From that point on, I've had numbness down my arm and constant pain. My index finger will move while sitting and I have trouble keep my arm up on the steering while while driving.

Numbness and pain down your arm is not coming from an AC joint separation ... that's coming from your neck and you need to see a good physical therapist for treatment

I messed up my AC joint about 7 months ago. I had pain with the injury but thought it would heal with time. it actually got worst, to the point where i was getting heart attack symptoms that would give me Anxiety and panic attacks which i never had before either. Pain was from the neck which would give me headaches, dizziness and a feeling i was going to pass out, all the way to the shoulder down to the wrist. I also had pain in the chest that woudl come out of nowhere. Thank god i finalyl went to a GOOD chiropractor and she figuered out right away what was wrong with me and fixed me up she used what felt like a hammer to nock it back in alignment. Ah im so happy im finally back to normal.

Same approach really ... the elevated collar bone on grade 3 strains likely won't change BUT I found in a lot of cases that isn't the generator of the pain and that these myofascial techniques )along with the right exercises) can still make a grade 3 painfree

Hey Carter, that is a great and very informative video; quick question : Been dealin with a mild separation the past year, what i ve noticed is that freestroke swimming tends to make the separation worse and by worse i dont mean pain wise, but gap wise. Do you think its in my head or is it something that could actually happen? I got a 2ond degree separation and i had clavicle resection and subacromial decompression (sadly in 2 different surgeries cuz my surgeons suck)

@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin 5 лет назад
Just remember that 'strength' and 'pain' are very different things, but pain can inhibit strength gains because it limits what levels of exercise you can do. If you have someone perform these types of manual therapy techniques to reduce the pain and increase range of motion, you can typically advance your excerises faster and should start feeling the strength gains within 2-6 weeks. Depending on a number of factors though, it can still take months to get back to 100% strength.

Please advise me! My VA orthopedic surgeon tells me my AC joint is not separated. Yet the MRI says 11mm gap. I have been in PT for 5 months for a Slap and Bankhart repair, and my AC joint continues to get more painful and large in appearance. The surgeon and the PT both say the strength training will resolve the AC joint problem, but the conundrum is that it is in fact making it worse. Before the labrum repair I asked about AC joint resection being done at the same time, but they did not feel it was necessary. I am a massage therapist out of work since September 2016 and I must resolve this on my own before next year. Have you dealt with a case similar to mine, or could you recommend anything to me? God bless
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin 6 лет назад
So very sorry to hear about your dilemma .. having those other injuries associated with the overall situation definitely muddies the waters. Like I said, the appearance of the separation is not going to change, but the pain should improve over time with the right treatment. Is your PT doing much/any hands-on manual therapy? If so, is it anything like what I've shown here. If they're unwilling or unable, perhaps getting a massage colleague to try some of these techniques? Where do you live?
@michaeldooley5331
@michaeldooley5331 6 лет назад
My PT is really doing great work, I am very impressed as a massage therapist. It is a little different but I don't want to tell him what to do. If you don't mind giving me one more opinion, I want to use crawling as done on a youtube channel called Original Strength as my goal once I get this under control. Do you think bearing weight on all fours like this is unrealistic in my future, considering it does put some stress on the AC joint? I have long since abandoned weights and rock climbing and I must find something functional that ties my body together because I get very depressed without this. Thanks!
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin 6 лет назад
If you're gonna do crawling exercise movements, I'd defintely avoid having your hands really close together cause that'll put higher strain on the AC. But in general, I wouldn't do anything that causes sharp pain.
@twing21able

Michael Dooley your shoulder is toasted unless you have dough to repair through surgery. Grade 3 is mine and docs tend to shy away from surgery accordi 3, night to more complications from performing. If you have the opportunity to trust your doctor, surgery is best if grade 3 , most likely, but most docs would rather not deal with the AC separation and refer you elsewhere

@joranwa430
@joranwa430 5 лет назад
I hope he meant weight lifting like the sport, and not to advice you to not strenght exercise. When you have full range of motion you can and should excercise strenght training, but not as it hurts. You should also not feel that the discomfort is worsened hours after training. Then you have to put lighter weights. Grade 3 often needs surgery to get a full recovery. Grade 1-2 are normally treated without surgery. I have a grade 1 (maybe grade 2 since 1 doctor said that first). I had to work hard on my recovery for 1 year. I advice you to see a physical therapist, and discuss weather to try conservative training or surgery. Surgery will still need physiotherapy, so seeing the PT is smart anyway :)

But wont TP and hands on technique give the patient only temporary pain reduction?
@cashbasedpractice
@cashbasedpractice 6 лет назад
Good question .. in some cases, the progress made in a hands-on PT session will fade a little between treatments, but if you do a few treatments in a row, the pain relief should be more and more lasting with each one.

is this your clinical experience or are u following an evidence based review/RCT/study? ^^
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin 6 лет назад
Based on my clinical experience ... studies of "physical therapy for AC joint strain" or almost anything for that matter often don't involve manual therapy, and if they do, it's never the specific types of techniques I use (nor do I know the skill level of the therapists providing treatment in those studies), so I therefore take the results of those types of studies with a grain of salt.

i thought that the torn ac joint was irreparable? would i recover even if I'm a weight lifter
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin
@CarterPhysiotherapyAustin 6 лет назад
The big "step" off the collar bone that can occur with bad AC tears is not likely to "repair" and improve without surgery (which is generally not advised in most cases). However, the pain and loss of range of motion is what can be drastically improved with the right manual therapy techniques like the ones shown in this video. If you're in Austin, reach out to us via www.carterpt.com/. If not, find a good Physical Therapist in your area who is certified in Manual Therapy.

Carter Physiotherapy I wish I was near I would be there in a heart beat. I have the same pain as this guy in the video when I put my arm across my neck. I can tell we are probably at the same pain level, and I have spent too much/ soo much money on different therapists who all have no idea what or how to begin. I'm in California in the Palm Springs area. If you know anyone close by I would love to know thank you for your video

OMG. So did I. Well, the pain is light. But it is bothersome. Been having this for almost a month now. Went to a therapist but said I only need to rest the shoulder. Need six to eight weeks to heal.

That's complete BS that your therapist just said to rest and that nothing else can be done... find a good manual physical therapist in your area!

@@city__lights that's good to know and I have a grade 2 with the bone pooping out it's not popping out crazy or anything just like a little bump. It's good to know you are doing good. At 2 months are you able to do things like shoot a basketball and lift close to what you were able to?
@ALBO4REAL
@ALBO4REAL 4 года назад
@@city__lights 2 months for me turns out myn was a grade 3 after testing again. I feel great though my strength is at about 95 percent my range of motion is 100 percent. The only problem I have is doing pull ups and butterfly exercises. I did the rehab to recover quickly. I'm happy I didn't choose the surgery route because at about 1 month I though it was never gonna heal because I still felt pain but I then let it rest for a week and felt amazing after. The clicking pretty much stopped it only clicks when I'm on my third set of bench press. It doesn't really hurt or anything though I guess it's just the joint overusing itself. Probably gonna get arthritis in my shoulder when I'm older. But they have shots for that anyways so we shouldn't be affected too much when were older.

@snorlaxcom

lol you serious? The tense musculature is the body's way to protect the joint from further damage by compensating, but relieving the muscle tension promotes blood flow for better recovery.

Extremely Difficult, if not impossible, to severely injure the "bone and joint" without injuring and affecting the surrounding soft tissue. I'm sorry to hear about your injury.
