This video overs the second part of my AC install on a LS 5.3 swapped 1987 Chevy R10/C10 truck. It also goes over a few cool upgrades that I've added.
I do wish that I had installed some type of high side pressure switch on this system. I will probably go back and add one.
For part 1 video of the AC install see this video:

Yea, suspension is an important one for the appearance of the ride. I want to bag a truck some day, but it wont be my current truck. I want this truck as dependable as possible and a static drop is more dependable.

Did the old evaporator work? Or do you have to replace the existing evaporator and condenser for the new compressor? The reason I ask is because I have a 78 C15 that came with factory AC and I am considering doing a 5.3 swap but doing some research first about the AC.

Youre a life saver buddy! We are putting a 5.3 in my dads suburban and this clears some of the questions up. Out of curiousity, what type of shop did you take your AC lines to to have modified? We are almost thinking it could be easier, depending on the controls inside the truck, to fit up a 2000s style heater box to the truck and run all the factory components, but his has rear air which makes things more difficult...

AGearhead4Life Will I be ok if I bolt on ls1 heads to a 5.3 but put 4.8 flat head pistons in to bring the compression back up
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
Short answer is yes, it'd work fine. Long answer is the only binefit of the LS1 heads is the 2" intake vavle. Those heads flow the same as 5.3 heads though. That is why I like to keep 5.3 heads and put the 2" valve in them. That give a great compression ratio.

Pat Maki You could just use one valve. I didn’t notice my old C10 setup to Gabe a high pressure switch, so I didn’t install a port for one. I regret that! I am now about to open the system to add the high pressure switch and to use a R134 condensor from a newer truck.

@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
Doby Gillard Thank you Doby! That is a huge complement. wow. And thanks for the continued support! Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering what will happen from too high pressure on the high side. I learned part of it the other night the hard way. I had no fan becuase they were dependent on the PCM to turn them on once the engine reached operating temp. Well the engine cooled enough, so the fan shut off and the pressure climbed extremely high on the high side from the heat in the condenser. The next thing I knew there was a loud pop and the system seemed to have purged the pressure until I cut it off. I didn't locate the relief valve yet, but that's what seemed to have happen because its working fine now. Now that I have the fan to kick on with the AC its been fine, but it would be nice to have the clutch kick out by a high side pressure switch in case that fan failed for some reason. So I'm still working on that. Any idea if the old C10 system had a high side pressure switch?
@dobygillard1526
@dobygillard1526 9 лет назад
Not that I am aware of. I am searching for a 1/4''SAE female flare fitting w/valve depressor. like would fit on a R12 service fitting. Two wire cut out at about 395 and back in at 225. Binary switch. I found a 1/4'' male and ordered it then found out it needs to be the female... live and learn... always the hard way for me... Time is getting tougher to come by. as you can tell by my april 12th reply...
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
Doby Gillard I definitely here you on the value of time. Its gotten so rare lately that it scares me. So far my AC seems to doing well and dependable. Fans are wired to come on with the AC now and its stays blowing about 50*. Temp around here during testing has only been 82* on average though, but very humid.
@SuperBlackStar1992
@SuperBlackStar1992 8 лет назад
Im confused. Is your ac controlled by the c10 or is it wired into the trucks stock controls? Also, you said your compressor is wired into your electric fans? Im confused. Is that the only way to do it?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 лет назад
+KAnthonyStrick1992 Compressor isn't wired into the electric fan. Most AC systems are pretty much self controlled. They have two switches that control it, a high pressure switch and a low pressure switch. My truck only supplies that power that turns it on when I flip the AC switch on my dash, like a light switch. Once the AC system has power it's on. The AC clutch may cycle, but that is hailed on it's own by the pressure switches.
@SuperBlackStar1992
@SuperBlackStar1992 8 лет назад
+AGearhead4Life okay I get you. I was thinking that nd just got jumbled when you showed the relays. sorry. lol. was your truck factory a/c? and Im reading a lot you have to wire the compressor into the pcm. Did you by pass that? and if so, how?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 лет назад
+KAnthonyStrick1992 Yes, my truck was factory AC. I just ran the original AC compressor wire to the new compressor. I did not run it to the PCM yet. Giving a signal to the PCM will allow it to idle up when the AC is on to help it idle better. Also, the AC can interrupt power to the compressor when you floor it. For now, I just turn off the AC when I floor it.

@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
godcarsmoney The cluctch engaugement signal does usually go through the PCM, that way the PCM knows to idle the engine up too. I believe this type of compressor just switched on/off and the fancy new style was variable, around 2009?. I do wish that I had installed some type of high pressure switch on this system. I may have to go back and add that.
@godcarsmoney

Doing my research you can only use a 2000 compressor because it cuts on and off with a clutch... I call one of the junk yards in my local area and I noticed it was two different kinds what year truck your compressor came off of.... I'm pretty sure its 99/2000

@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 лет назад
+David Bush There was one plug with two terminals that was on the firewall that went to the old compressor. I used the same wire that went to the old compress to go to the swapped one. If I remember correctly, it didn't matter which of the two to use, because they were both hot when the AC was on. I think the other went to a solenoid on the throttle to idea it up for the AC.

Rico Turk No, I havent made a video on the fuel system but I guess that would be a good idea. I ahve a '87 truck. So it was alreadi TBI fuel injected. So it had the intank pump already. All I did was swap in a higher pressure fuel pump. Then at the end that connected to the TBI unit, I cut the hard line and used high pressure hose and doubled high pressure hose clamps. If you get on my Facebook blog page from a desktop, go into the photo album of the truck and you see pics of what I did there.

jeremy hunt Not usually, the yoke will stick out an inch further. You may be able to find a way around that though. I had to use the central mounting ones because my 80e yoke that I had had an inch thicker head on it.

i have a 1980 chevy truck long wheel base i'm using a 5.3 motor and tranmisson out of a 2002 chevy truck . i was wondering could i use the 2002 chevy truck yoke from the front and could i use the same driveshaft with no cutting on the driveshaft
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
Byron Callic The yoke would work, but probalby the yoke that you have would work too, if you have a th350. If you do have a th350, your driveshaft will be too long and I dont think the one off of the 2002 would be the right length. I've alwasy wanted to use a newer driveshaft and have it cut to fit our trucks. Theyre aluminum and the light weigth would be good for rotating mass, but theyre not as strong and with added power have been known to explode.

@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
Byron Callic No problem. Oh, I also meant to tell you that you could get a driveshaft from a long wheel base C10 that had a 700r4 trans and it'd fit. You'll need to either use "one inch set-back" swap plates or Dirty Dingo adjustable swap plates.

What can u pull a ls 5.3 or 6.0 out of?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
txchevyrida GM truck and suburbans around 2000 and up. the 6.0s arent near as common as the 5.3s though. Thats why the 6.0s cost twice as much as a 5.3. 5.3s are everywhere and can be picked up complete with all accessories, harness and all ready to run with about 150k miles for around $700 on average.

@agearhead4life where did you get your new compressor from? ebay or parts store?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 лет назад
I bought a new one from a local parts store for two reasons. Mainly for the warranty and I bought new instead of the cheaper reman version, because I've seen way too many reman compressors warranty returned when I sold parts for four years. It could have been installer error, but I didn't want to take a chance.

+AGearHead4Life Yeah sounds about right i was gonna order one but i was also thinking about warranty issues if the issue comes around... Hows the a/c been performing I know those ls style a/c compressors last a while...
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 8 лет назад
I don't know much about the life of the LS compressors, but I've read something about a "deslugger" kit for them. To help them start up slower to keep from trying to compress the liquid refrigerant since the compressor is down at the bottom of the system. IDK just something I read. Anyway, it's been working great man. I'm loving it. Stays blowing around 50* in the cab. Of course I want to improve it as much as possible, like any gearhead. So I want to put the foam in between the condenser and radiator to help air flow. Im also not currently using the high speed function on my fan, because I need a larger relay/fuse setup. Finally I'l like to add a fan to the condenser to help it even more at idle. These are all not necessary things, just me trying to make it the best it can be. I want it to sit in a parking lot for hours in 105* heat outside and have no issue staying cool inside. lol

@davidsantillan7348 9 лет назад
AGearhead4Life so it's from the pressure switch to the relay but what plug on the relay?
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
David Santillan A relay will have a trigger side of it, that wire will be what triggers the relay. Are you following my Facebook blog page or our group FB page? If so, I can share a diagram that I have on there of how a relay works. It's also a diagram of how to wire in a radiator fan relay.
@davidsantillan7348
@davidsantillan7348 9 лет назад
AGearhead4Life well I wired it directly to the fans and that made my whole system shut off and will only come on when the fans come on when the temp is at its point but I cut off the wires I point that I hooked on the fans and still no power to the ac system
@AGearHead4Life
@AGearHead4Life 9 лет назад
David Santillan Yea, that power wire coming from the trucks AC harness cant supply enough power to run the fans. That's why it is used to control a relay. All a relay is basically a switch. It allows a small amout of amerage to trigger a switch to allow a large about a amperage to pass. So you'd use that wire from the AC harness to trigger the realy to allow power through the thicker power cable to the fans. It is difficult to explain in words, but is very simple. That is why I offered to show you the diagram. Its way more simple then it sounds. You probably blew a fuse trying to run the fans on that wire. Check your fuses.

victor chavelas Victor, I'm not sure how to take your comment. You know a lot of people leave sarcastic rude comments and when they do, they use all caps and lots of punctuation like you have. I can easily misunderstand your comment as sarcasm and not respond to it, but I'm thinking that in this case this might actually be a serious question. If so, all you have to do is type it normally.
