Sorry, I should also add a word of warning. The amount of development and testing that went into the cooling fan control module (type W3 twin and W3 single) was enormous. This was to ensure longevity and, above all, safety. Control modules such as these are potentially liable to water ingress over time that can lead to internal short-circuit with overheating of the module or the supply wiring which can have very damaging results for the module and the car. During development, the W3 PWM control module had to meet very high standards imposed by Volvo to ensure this could not happen with many features incorporated such as the anodised heat sink to avoid corrosion breaching the seal allowing moisture ingress, as well as high temperature-rated internal components. Tempting as they are, the aftermarket Chinese copies are cheap and will function but their long-term corrosion resistance and internal fail-safe systems are unproven so I would never fit one to my own car for concerns of safety and vehicle integrity.

What a great video, thank you. For information.... The motors are different between LHS and RHS; they look the same because they are the same 'MP8131' motor family but the internal windings are different in order to match the motor performance to the different loads of large fan and small fan. Early cars could suffer premature brush wear out, this was fixed by a revised brush material with much better durability. The front ball bearing should be lubricated with synthetic oil e.g. Mobil 1. The motors and fan are balanced at the factory as an assembly, so to ensure preserving proper fan balance, take care not to displace or lose any of the balancing edge clips on the fan blades. Additionally, when removing the fan from its motor, mark its orientation on the motor shaft then take care to reassemble in the correct orientation (i.e. not 180 degrees out) otherwise vibration and/or noise can result. I worked for the supplier of these cooling fans for many years and worked closely with the Volvo engineers on the development of the EuCD/Y20 programme (I am now retired). I hope this helps. I now have a 2009 P3 XC70 T6 so I love the videos. Keep them coming!

@@volvosweden I didn't intend to be critical of what you did in the video - quite the opposite! I think your videos are great and really help the owner keep his beloved Volvo on the road. I just thought I would point out some less obvious points from my experience and pass them on to help people a bit more.

I had the same fan failure on my S80 and went to a salvage yard to get a replacement. But with the 90 minute drive both directions to the yard and having to pull my own radiator fan assembly and the assembly of the salvage car, it may have been quicker to do it Yevgeny's way! And he did a great job and recording it all.

Thank you for translating Evgeny's work. Impressive difference between fans motors. The bigger indeed looks new, for 200k that's great. The smaller not so much but that's probably down to the bad bearings due to dust or frequent use. I guess cleaning and lubricating bearings frequently (every 2 or 3 years?) might help. I just replaced my gearbox oil cooler and added an external filter to tackle hard shifts (desperate move, I know), I should have cleaned the fans motors prior ! There is no boredom in the land of P3 ownership ahah

@@devrimarabalari oh right. No T6 but D5 here, just noticed I have only one fan, much easier. Look for maktrans on google. They have an adapter plate named D79 for 13mm hoses. You can get hoses and quick fittings as well on their website. I mounted an OC976 Knecht oil filter on the adapter plate. Good for about 11k kms (the oil was dirty so you can expect a longer lifespan of the second filter I guess). I have to replace it now. Don’t overtighten it, I did, very difficult to remove afterwards. You may need the filter tool so you might as well get it from the get go. I placed the adapter and filter on the upper part of the fan assembly. No screws no zip tie, holds in place because hoses are very rigid. I’ve been on dirt roads in Finland with potholes everywhere, it didn’t move. Basically, you cut a hose to go from the upper fitting of the oil cooler to the « IN » of the adapter plate. The « out » is the OEM hose going back to the valve body oil pan. The OEM quick fittings are a pain, very difficult to remove. You might need several pliers. Make space around the oil cooler to get the pliers in the right position, very tricky. If you have hard shifts and your oil has been flushed recently, they will disappear in a few kilometers, I was astounded. When the hard shifts come back, just replace the filter. That can be bothersome, but cheaper than the gearbox for sure. Now I need to cut open the filter to see if the dirt is rubber from bad hoses (can happen) then I will change them or simply the clutch friction material disintegrating, then it means torque converter going out. As I have the TF80SD (so 2nd gen, 2012) I have more friction material so yours might not last as long with filter installed. It is really just a work around to diagnose the gearbox to me but hey, better than nothing!

здравствуйте! This video was really helpful, I have done it today on my XC70. Sadly it didn't worked on mine. I have changed the brushes on a smaller fan, lubricated the bearings etc., the main fan's brushes are a little bit worn out, but I had only 4 new brushes. The commutator on a smaller fan is really bad, I tried to smooth it down like Jevgenyij had done. The main fan commutator is in good condition. Finally I assembled the whole thing, and it didn't worked. Both fans kicked in, then cuts off both, the main stayed on little bit longer at high speed. Ac comp checked - good, AC clutch checked - ok, Fan control module checked - ok, it has a brand new oem Valeo condenser, with new valve (front IDK it is a high or low side) and filled with fresh R134a. My question is: The faulty code (ECM - P048397) need to be deleted after this repair? Or it is a plug&play thing, like on earlier Fords (EU).

Awesome video. I drive a 2012 xc70 with about 300.000km, and since 1 or 2 weeks my airconditioning also has some random problems, only starting to work after driving 3 minutes or so. I haven't diagnosed it yet with VIDA but for sure I'm gonna do that, this seems like the same problem. I thought the commutator on the working fan was also still pretty grooved, more than I expected looking at the little wear on the brushes. I guess all the dust inside works as an abrasive. I have a lathe, so if my commutator is as worn as this, I might try and fit it in the lathe and carefully skim off the ridges. I've ordered some brushes on aliexpress in the size 7x8x18mm. Lets see if they'll fit and how long it takes to send them. I like the diy attitude in the video. I see a Vida interface, a Ruideng Riden lab power supply....it all looks very familiar 😁👍

I've exactly the same problem on my T6 S80. AC starting to work after driving 3-4 minutes sometimes. Sometimes suddenly just starts without delay. The issue is my Fan block is completely new and clean, replaced by Dealer with the original. I personally suspect the AC control valve. There is also noise on my AC when it starts to work.

Mine gone bad after 16 years of use, just replaced the module with cheap 40-50 dollars chinise module working like a dream for over a year volvo want it to charge me over nearly 600-800$ for original module that's crazy making money out of the air. Mine is S80 2007 p3 2.5T 147 kw

I've known about the Chinese PWM fan module copies for some years. They won't have had the same development testing of the OE part (that I did back in 2004-7) which has internal fault detection built in to limit the maximum current draw. Because the fan module is permanently connected to the battery +ve without a relay, if you do fit one of these cheap copies, I would, at least, think about fitting a lower current fuse in the line feeding the PWM fan module. The twin fans running together are about 750W so a fuse of 60A max should be about right to better protect the wiring (and the car) in the event of a fault.

@lawrencedooley7560 it seems mine 2007 p3 s80 2.5T 147kw was with the older model fan with only 1 ran rather like all other p3s with 2 fans it is working with the chinise fuse pretty well 2nd year without issue.

@@lawrencedooley7560a friend has sent me his failed PWM unit and I have bought a cheap Chinese one. The difference is shocking, they are very cheaply built with just a single thyristor doing the work. I am carrying the cheap knockoff in the boot of my P3 V70 just in case but I know I won't be using it long, the suggestion of an extra fuse is a good one.

Hi, I really like your videos most helpful. I have a V70 2011 model. Have a problem with the heated back seat, left side is not working. (I have visited many forms without getting the info I need to solve this issue. Would be really glad if you could help me. 1. I have the same resistance on right and left side- indicates that the electrical seat is okay. If not can you replace the heat sercuit on existing seat? 2. I can't get I electrical wiring diagram on this, makes it difficult. 3. Is it possible that the left switch in the center console is broken? How do I get to this switch so that I can measure the voltage? It would be a big help for me if you have tips on this matter. Best Regards Erik, from Sweden

I had the same problem with my 2008 S80 with 325,000 km. Two mechanics couldn't fix it. Finally, I took it to a Volvo dealer. They diagnosed the issue and replaced the fan assembly. $1,600 all in. I hate taking my cars to dealers but in this case, the dealer was able to fix it when my regular mechanics couldn't.
