I did this specifically for my followers who are entry level technicians, new to the industry, limited or no experience... this is what I recommend in diagnosing, evaluating, during a service call. If you don't have a multimeter, if your inexperienced with guages you can still use this method in troubleshooting to help you isolate and determine the cause of a failing component. Enjoy and feel free to leave comment and or feedback!

I learned from your what didn't learned from HVAC School. You're channel is my favorite HVAC in RU-vid, because it simplify the issues. Dude it is intimidated when you're Green, however, by watching your videos I feel confident. Please keep it coming in a simple way. Thank you. Peace.

Very informative video. I'm a new techie and had a similar experience, where the contactor points were welded shut, the capacitor and the fan would not work. We replaced all these components and tried starting the unit. The contactor started jumping on and off so I disconnected one of the 24 volt leads. However, the evaporator board was damaged by feedback of current so that had to be replaced too. The repairs took three days and customer was very upset, and very little money was made... Thanks for your encouraging words bro...its a hard life being a new techie...

Note that the contactor is energized with 24V when the thermostat is calling for power because the power is coming from the AHU that is energized even though Sam pulled the power switch outside. That is why he could read control voltage on the contactor.

hi sam, i got my type 1, and now studying for my universal. i work for a apartment community and we get slammed with ac calls. most are capaseters or compressors. are rooftop condensing units have fuses in the disconnects so we ohm them out first. they are split systems condenser is only for ac, the system in the apartment has a heating coil that is fed by the water heater and then you have your ac coil. it also has a circulater with check valve built inside it. they were built by first company i think. any tips on those be great. thanks

Could you of just eliminated that fan capacitor and plugged both leads into the main capacitor?

Can you recommend a good amp meter and ohm meter for tech use ?
@beerbrewer737

I've had a Fluke meter for years. It is a Fluke 73 and it does not have a mfd function (as an aircraft mechanic I don't need it) so while it's not a good meter for an HVAC technician I can recommend the brand.

Hmmm. I have similar issue with my outside unit . Turn ac on I hear compressor tun and unit get hot. I shut it down . I have one dual capacitor. I replaced it and still no fan..yes the contactor is engaging. Any ideals..thanks

If your condenser motor is not working on the condenser it will need to be replaced. If you replaced the capacitor and motor will not turn on you have isolated it to the condenser fan motor itself. If you need further assistance I do have a step by step tutorial on my channel 👍

@@MoreThanMaintenance you where right it is a bad condenser fan motor..I have service contract and they came out to do summer check up. I told him I'm having issues .no fan..he check and said the motor is bad..I said ok I'll order one..he said yea if you can do that type of work it will save you money. For the part he said about 400 or 500. I said I can get the exact same motor make model manufacturer for 150...lol its only 3 wire I am mechanically inclined. Even though my heat pump is still under warranty for another 4yrs the part would be free of charge but I would have to pay labor..and that will cost more then the part if I buy it and install...lol..
