This is a look back at 5 days spent on the water paddling, training and learning in hopes of becoming L2 and L3 ACA instructors. Scott Szczepaniak of Sea Kayak Carolina was our instructor trainer, assisted by instructor David McPherson of Sea Kayak Connecticut. It took place at the USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 72 Training Center in Norwalk, CT. Special thanks to Commander Robert Talley.
This is not intended to be a training video, it is simply a video diary of our workshop experience. I do, however, hope that it inspires other fellow kayak nuts to seek instruction in all areas of paddling. No matter at what level, there's always room to improve stroke technique, as well as promote higher levels of safety.

Use to be ACA level 4 open ocean, Maine certified sea instructor and many BCU certs. Kayaker for a living over 10 years. This brought back some memories when I was 22 and got my ACA level 4. Looks like there is much to improve. We can always share vids if you ever want to work on video analysis. Always thought it would be cool to have a website for kayakers to share their vids to get feedback.

Absolutely. I've taken many, many courses and attended retreats to continue improving. This video was made 2 years ago, and it was excellent to see all the areas for improvement then - and areas that still continue to need work. I believe paddling is a life-long journey, and there's always areas to improve. That's what's great about filming yourself - the camera doesn't lie. At the same time, it's great to see the progress over the years. Cheers!

KayakHipster 100 % agree. The camera is so clutch to getting things sorted out. Been using mine recently to sort out White Water -- boofs, surfs, etc. what skill are you trying to sort? I am going to try rolling my Greenlander pro with a Greenland stick in 2017. Would appreciate some honest feedback if you are down? Been using a euro blade for 20 years so this should be interesting haha ... lots of rivers are in around Portland so mostly running those. Stoked to do more sea boating soon out here... ever been to Oregon Coast?

Excellent! Absolutely, send videos my way, I'd be more than happy to weigh in. Greenland rolling is great for technique, and for keeping calm underwater. I'm sure it'll contrast your latest WW experience with rolling, in a really good way. I think different styles of rolling can only help you become a better paddler. Keep me posted! Cheers.

Thanks! Here I was paddling a wilderness systems zephyr 155. I've since moved on to a Rockpool Alaw Bach and most recently a Rockpool Isel. Cheers!

@KayakHipster

This particular certification is for paddlers in the US. Where are you located? You can search on the ACA website (americancanoe.org) for courses and certification classes near you (if you're located in the US)
