Back when A Current Affair was a proper news show and not full of garbage about comparing supermarket prices and fawning over visiting international celebrities.
yea, how many times have they done that..but for every generation or something 20s..its all new..remember most suffer from attention deficit..there are still some good stories..and who's watching tv when you have social media with the iphone..
simonmoves There's been a dumbing down with television and this generation now. Im 34 so not that old but back in 1989 all the channels on Australian TV did serious current affairs, but eventually channels 9 and 10 realised there was more ratings to be had from sensationalism and in 10's case youth entertainment demographics and the serious current affairs went out the window and were left to the ABC that didn't rely on ratings. Nowadays you get shows like The Project trying to be youthful and still tackle current affairs but the day of the serious current affairs show on commercial TV has long since died as in this day and age the 20 and 30 somethings are more interested in Lady Ga Ga than what's going on in parliament.
Blue Whovian glad you noticed ,, standard is going down..they have to sensationalism it so people watch it..the 7 o'clock time slot is a high rating period..as i said with social media and ipads/iphones..it can take viewing away from traditional tv viewing...so they have repeat stories from way back when that got good ratings..i still say,,there are interesting stories on ACA..if i want to view it..you can catch up on ninemsn and watch it on line..or record it and fast foward quickly..to what you want to see...of course if joh was around,,he would say--your wrong wrong wrong..cheers simon
Blue Whovian You're exactly right in both of your comments. Gone are the days when serious current affairs were reported every night. You had Chris Masters, Quentin Dempster, Ray Martin, Jana Wendt and other serious Journalists who concentrated on the important things and asked the hard questions. Of course, there was also Kerry O'Brien on the ABC, who tripped up a lot of politicians and other shady characters like Bond and Skase. Leigh Sales does a great job covering important national issues and is one of the most able Journalists in the country---a worthy successor to Kerry O'Brien. Like Kerry, Leigh can see through the Political spin, is a relentless pursuer of the truth and extremely well versed in all political matters from Foreign Affairs to the most recondite aspects of Economics. As you say, these days we're treated with what specials are on at Myers and other overt advertising in the guise of current affairs. Occasionally, ACA starts an investigation like they did with Robert Hughes, and blows the cover of conmen like Peter Foster. Kudos to them for that, but I believe they should also be reporting matters of substance such as what's transpiring in Parliament and other serious issues. I'm not the least bit interested in which celebrity is dating which other celebrity, what clothes the Queen or some Princess is wearing or what's on the cover of Womans Day. I much prefer the meat and potatoes to the salads and garnishings offered by ACA. Richard Hiller.
You are so, so right. ACA is a joke now, compared to what it used to be-when it investigated and reported on matters of substance. Occasionally they get it right, with proactive journalism which led directly to the arrest and prosecutions of Robert Hughes and Peter Foster. However, I can hardly envisage Journalists like Jana Wendt, Quentin Dempster, Chris Masters, Kerry O'Brien and Leigh Sales ingenuously and enthusiastically spruiking about discounts at Coles. The media have dropped the ball with respect to current affairs, and the talents of gifted Journalists like Tracey Grimshaw and Martin King are being squandered. If they devoted one tenth of the energy and revenue to current affairs that they do to "reality shows" like Big Brother, the public would be far more enlightened than they are now.
You could not make this interview up. What an era. Amazingly, this fellow dominated Queensland politics as premier for nearly two decades. He profoundly influenced federal politics too. Thank you for posting this interview. I certainly miss journalists of the exceptional calibre of Jana Wendt.
Love Jana's smile when she gets the kind of Joh-isms she's hoping for...like him saying he was told the interview would be about her book (it's HIS book), then coming out with, "Jana, you know very well that you've got your foot on a sticky paper" and "all I know, Jana, is you can't stick to the truth a lot and you go up dry gullies like you have"... hilarious!
James Burns it’s as if he was borderline senile - the fast forward clan perfectly captured the character. I feel like Sir Joh’s ‘serious’ manner is a joke in real life. I see a few smirks here 🤣
Just saying you’re wrong without saying why, changing what you say mid-sentence, stuttering over simple words and avoiding questions means you’re a fool
brent smith lol he didn’t even try to answer it. Kept changing what he was changing mid sentence. Avoided questions. It was obviously true and he went to trial for it and only avoided retrial by his age. If you support him, you a bigger fuckwit than he was. He said she as wrong and was going to prove it. He never did. She was willing to substantiate it there and then. He wasn’t. Just kept on going “You are wrong, you are wrong...” couldn’t offer anything in his defence pathetic
She is formidable. One of the very best interviewers I have ever seen. I saw a joke tape she made with David Jonson. She was very funny too, that just doesn’t surprise me. She would not get a show in the Australian Media at the moment she would have the current mob of politicians cringing in their shoes. I don’t anybody beat her in an Interview situation. In my opinion her & Kerry O’Brien ( who John Howard refused to do interviews with ) just made politics in Australia a lot more honest in the 80’s & 90’s. She definitely would not be offered a job at News Ltd. I saw her 1 day with her husband in a Department Store in Sydney in the 1980’s. Beautifully dressed & just stunning.
waa, waa, waa, “the media i don’t like wouldn’t give her a job” “i only like this media company and not this one because mine tells the truth” waa, waa, waa bro they all b lying one way or another u ideologically corrupted nut
@@justdoesntaddup8620 . Did I say that. I was quite simply saying she is a class act . Only Kerrie O’Brien in this county was as good as her . O’Brien in my view Lateline & 7.30 report interviews are what we need today. John Howard refused to be interviewed by him & he was the only interviewer that could make Keating stutter, even though they were friends. He also had Tony Abbott in a complete mess talking about the stimulus package introduced by the Labour Party in around 2008 .I said she Jana Wendt beautifully dressed, because she made an effort to be Professional, it has nothing to do with her being female.
@@beagle7622 Huh , she was just another pretty face trying to make herself as big as those she tried to unsettle, an unorganised bundle of kangaroo interview questions, none of them triggered Joh, but she kept rescripting the same tired allegation. Even tried to blame him for stalling the libs in the 80’s , joke , who could vote libs back then with peacock Howard go round. How many times can yr ask and repeat the same question, get calmly shunted away , then go back again with the same tired question. Fail. Again.
“Sir Leslie Thiess hauled Channel 9 into court, only to be confronted day after day with testimony from 50 witnesses that was more damaging, detailed and far-ranging than the original A Current Affair programme. In the end, the jury found that Channel Nine had proved that Sir Leslie Thiess had bribed Sir Joh on a large scale.”
@@dheath3697didn’t he go to court but the dissenting juror hid he was a former Young Liberal with ties to JBP so he was found not guilty ? He died soon after, so no appeal case could be made I think.
@@chanceryan1757 Piss off millennial. It's not even funny I mean he was an extremely professional journalist that would put any of the current ones to shame . Now I know you young ones have been taught to hate everybody but no one hated Ray it's just a shame that all the young ones decided they would rather play video games that watch television so there was no budget to pay for him so now we have the dregs of society reporting with blonde females that can't pronounce words correctly. If I hear another one of them saying wader or ninedy I'm going to lose it
I'll put you in jail for questioning my authority, I'll put you in jail for questioning my authority, I'll put you in jail for questioning my authority,
And parliament isn’t meant to be for the elite. It’s meant to be representative of you and I. Not all of us (speaking for myself of course) are Rhodes scholars
Democracy is mob rule accepted by the fools and academics who have been involved in fraudulent relationships with queen Elizabeth wearing stolen undies from India should return them asap via circular container and leave them to the rules of this document please read the following guidelines carefully before submitting your proposal for the purpose
By that statement I think you would prefer living in Victoria under Chairman Dan ! Also your statement tells me that you & people like you have a short memory .
Wow, QLD have come a long way since being under this clown. As a NZer arriving in Sydney in '89, about the time of this interview (stayed until '96) the disdain for QLD public sector was alarming... people from other states were relieved when Goss got in. JBP must have dodged quite a few bullets, I bet the ICAC loved him!
Jana, is so cool, intelligent and unshakable. The world really does miss legitimate journalistic lead television. And to think I had completely forgotten that Trump, began as premier of QLD. 🙏
After all these years, i've said it before, i'll say it again, Gerry Connolly & Marg Downey were brilliant in this interview Australian TV was so much better in the 80's & 90's :)
NZer here - Ok, I'll fess up and mention that we gave him to you! I don't know all that much about him except that I've heard a bit about his dodgy stuff. However, he comes across as a bit of a character in spite of that!
At least Trump is guaranteeing American jobs and not giving money overseas to all these false charities like the stopping of the giving to the United nation's and different minority groups in who don't deliver the money to where it's meant to be he's keeping the money in America unlike Joh Bjelke-Petersen he is putting in his own pocket
The man who made corruption a household word remembering Clive Palmer done his apprenticeship under Berjerkoff Peterson the old master of corruption taught him well right Clive🤏👁👀🤑
Made himself out to be a complete clown. Claimed she was wrong several times, was offered several chances to rebuke it and could not add one counter-argument. Every time he was asked to, all he could say was “you are wrong.” Several times in the interview he changed what he was saying mid-sentence. Obviously lying and can’t even offer a defence for himself. He couldn’t offer any proof for one reason: he knew there was none. Pretty much confirmed his guilt and gave us a memorable fast forward skit highlighting his idiocy
Jana. One of the best and fearless journalist ever seen in Australia. Asked sincere questions humbly. This arrogant, rude, corrupt, racist beast was trying his best to threaten her. God bless you Jana
+sliat1981 i will see you in another place..its not a pleasant place with the bull ants ..dont you worry about that,,the cows will come to roost on you,,in that particular area,,hmm
A master politician. And Queensland is what it is today, Australia's premier tourist destination, because of his positive, pro-development, and can-do approach. RIP great man.
Oh, classic Joh!..Just deny everything!..Dont see it, dont hear it, and just jabber away and dont answer anything!..Did ol' Joh ever answer a question?..Not in Queensland, they were too frightened to ask him one for fear of being sued in front of a Joh appointed judge!..How many times did that happen!..You have to love the old christian crook, he got away with all of it!
Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, Joh was great value for a laugh back in the day but no doubt like many more were your archetypical corrupted politicians. They were larger than life characters Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke etc but were all able to be corrupted by special interest groups, lots of under the table cash money floating around. He wielded a lot of power in Queensland for a long time and no doubt took plenty of brown paper bags full of cash. This never got proved because no doubt he had plenty of brown paper bags of cash to pass under the table to the corrupt judiciary himself. Jana Wendt was a great interviewer, very sharp and not a bad looker. A lot better than the left leaning muppets you get today.
