The first century, for example, began with the year 1 and ended with the year 100. Similarly, the 19th century began with the year 1801 and ended with the year 1900. This means that the 1800s are considered part of the 19th century, rather than the 18th century, which ended with the year 1799. It's a common confusion because the 1800s seem like they should be part of the 18th century since they are the first decade of that century, but the century number is based on the years it spans, not the first ten years.
