This Victoria Day, I visited Academie Duello - Centre for Swordplay in downtown Vancouver for a test cutting session with 2 of my new swords: the Albion Ringeck and Angus Trim type XVIa.4. It turned out to be a fantastic experience. During the two hours, I enjoyed all the banter about historical European martial arts, swords and other weapons, and the community in general. Sword scholar Benjamin was very amicable and courteous to set up the venue and the tatami mats for me, help me with the techniques during cutting, and let me handle his own variation of Angus Trim sword (type XVIa.7 presumably), so I could compare and contrast it with the Atrim sword I own. I was able to cut 3 new tatami mats, and 3 old Japanese mats.
I used to live not far from where Academie Duello is located, in the English Bay neighborhood, and I regret not being able to visit sooner. They offer a wide variety of activities related to HEMA, including axe-throwing, archery, mount combat, wrestling, armored fighting, physical conditioning, and of course all disciplines of historical fencing training including rapier, sidesword, sword & buckler, and longsword. This is the most convenient location in downtown Vancouver, being close to practically everything. Even after I moved house to West Vancouver, it's still only a 15-minute drive. If you are interested in history, sword or martial arts in general, definitely support Academie Duello by paying them a visit and signing up for some activities or courses, especially in these difficult times, helping cultivate a community not yet considered mainstream is a must!
The two swords (Albion Ringeck and Angus Trim type XVIa.4) I cut with in this video will have their separate review videos posted soon!

I'm glad that you did some standardized cutting at a HEMA location.

Very very cool! Thanks for sharing this! Was your ATrim XVIa.4 sharpend after out of the box?

Thank you! Yes, out of the box the edges are not sharp. I felt the sharpness by doing the fingernail test, and it kind of skidded on the nail, I would say it wasn't sharpened with a medium grit belt before shipped. I sharpened it twice on a WorkSharp after doing two cutting sessions at home, but still didn't manage to get the edges to proper mat cutting level with my amateurish sharpening skill.

That was great! How did you get started in swords? No HEMA school close to me, there is a Japanese school, but i soent over 5 decades in a Japanese art, and really want to learn longsword techniques. Thanks for the video, very interesting.

Thank you very much. There are lots of online resource to study the period treatises like Wiktenauer, and plenty of videos available on RU-vid for a lot of fundamental stuff. Practicing cutting at home especially with some complex techniques is a good way to improve, if not school is nearby. Filming your cutting especially in slow motion and review the footage afterwards can help a lot with your form.

@@FortuneFavoursTheBold very good advice about filming. Without an instructor there I could wind up with a lot of bad habits. Thanks, Kane! ( I do love my new O Katana!) but my next Ronin Katana will be a Euro.

The host seemed very knowledgeable. Cool stuff. Finally gave you a properly sharp sword after the initial tatami humbling. Would be funny if they haze everybody like that ahah

Yes indeed. It was good to chat with the lad, as he's an instructor at longsword, sidesword and rapier and seems to be very knowledgeable at HEMA in general, and generous enough to let me handle a number of Albion, Regenyei and Darkwood swords aside from allowing me to cut with his own Atrim, which is properly sharpened. I sharpened my own Atrim twice and didn't manage to get it to an adequate sharpness. In addition, my Atrim is of the model that's longer and heavier and having a further point of balance, because Atrim swords use the standard pommel generally considered to be small for longswords. It keeps the overall weight down, but it's a bit forward heavy, so the sword does have a steeper learning curve.

@@FortuneFavoursTheBold Nice. I've never handled a longsword, but cool to hear anyway. About the one part in the video about thrusting. The instructor mentions stepping heel-toe for the thrust lunge, and I've been trying that since watching this. Seems to make a big difference. I notice my accuracy is better and I'm less likely to rip up the floor matting by sliding on the ball of my foot. Nice gem in the video, that bit of advice.
