Suspiria discussion with director Luca Guadagnino and actors Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Chloë Grace Moretz and Jessica Harper on October 27, 2018 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Moderated by Ben Mankiewicz.
@@jakeevans2725 Not just Olga's destruction (I won't call it a death because you can still hear her breathing when the Matrons hook and drag her into the Mutterhaus) but the design for Mother Markos herself.
@@AngelofMusic04 You know how I know you stated it more accurately than just "death"? Because it made me uncomfortable to say "destruction" and...yup, haha. But true y'all. There are a great number of awards this film deserved, whether Tilda Swinton's performance, original score, make up, writing, cinematography (those cuts used to emulate Dario Argento while also emphasizing the dual witchcraft/state of Germany...damn Luca). Good times.
it's been in my head for exaclty 22 days now and I still can't go over it, there was some sort of magic in it and I love the Thom Yorke's music to this, I listen to it while I paint.
I couldn't agree more. It definitely resonates in terms of being a film that sticks in your mind for days after you've seen it. I have to give Guadagnino credit for offering some very effective & fresh visuals that assisted in creating a unique tone. I've seen it twice and I discovered some things I missed the first time around. Also, I realized how much I enjoyed the music Thom Yorke did for film. And I also love the cast; it was perfect & unconventional at the same time. Tilda Swinton is brilliant, and I'll watch anything she does because I think she's one of the best in terms of acting skills. And Dakota Johnson surprised me; she portrayed Susie with real depth & vulnerability, which isn't easy to pull off when you consider the plot & how it progresses. Most audiences are really only familiar with her in the context of the "50 Shades" franchise, and she's capable of so much more and I feel "Suspiria" was a smart move on her part.
Amen. So was "Hereditary". Yet the tragically mediocre "Black Panther" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" are nominated for Best Picture. In true Oscar fashion the most deserving are often not nominated and rarely win.
I've watched that movie for the 6th time now. I made all my friends and my family watch it. I watched reviews, analysing videos, watched almost every interview and read the original script and I still can't get this movie out of my head. This is the best movie of 2018 by far and one of the best movies ever made!
Same here. It's one of the very few movies that stuck with me for weeks after watching...I couldn't get it out of my head. It was so disturbing, so dark, so intense, just hauntingly beautiful. The characters were perfectly cast, incredible acting, directing, the narration, the imagery and dream sequences, the music, all of it. I can't think of another film that I became so obsessed with. I've watched it many times and I feel like I notice something different or see something in a different way each time I watch it. I'm just in awe of every aspect of it.
Really loved his Suspiria he literally flipped it inside out. Would be interesting to see him flip 'Inferno' as well in a more bright and colorful way.
Nerding out: Dario uses the bright colors on inferno .. blues and reds and same with suspiria .. Luca worked with a scale of Gray's.. so he is doing the opposite... but because of tech, the Pixelation is better obvs... but yeah making a cover of inferno would be amazing.. specially because the ending was kind of crazy... and there's no final girl.. when you think you see the protagonist.... killed.... oh that's the on killed killed..
I have personally never thought much of Chloë Moretz as an actress, but she really blew me away in this movie. I've seen some people criticize her performance but I thought she was magnificent in the opening sequence.
As a fan of the original, Guadagnino almost totally reimagined it stylistically and esthetically. That wasn't only an amazing movie, but probably one of the best horror movies in the last twenty years.
This film (2018) is a MASTERPIECE. Yes, it was a tad too long but it is a masterpiece! Not for everyone apparently but everyone has to acknowledge this.
Mia Goth is so cute I want to hug her so bad and tell her she did an amazing job. This movie deserves awards and the recognition of audiences at this point any nomination they get even if it’s only for sound editing, cinematography or original song I’ll take it but I’m pretty sure this one is going to become a new classic, they all did great.
I was blown away by this movie. Visually stunning, amazing score, fantastic acting all round. I really felt something watching this and that is rare in films these days. It was a work of art and deserves serious recognition. I watched it three times to try and work out what it was I was feeling and still can’t put my finger on it. But I think that’s what has captivated me, I don’t fully understand it and that is ok. But it means I have been thinking about it ever since. A remake/re-imagining rarely impresses me as they often lose that something the original had. But this film did not disappoint.
Same here man, tbh, i had not even seen the 1st one and watched the new one, loved it to death and THEN went on to get my hands on a copy of the original and loved it too. (especially ... you know... comparing and "matching lore infos"... digging in that universe) But yeah, in the end, i might watch the original again sometime but i'm sure that i'll watch the new one at least 10 more times before my days are done!
Yeah, I had the same experience. Just wait a few more days, you'll form your opinion... Then watch it again, it'll be a different experience and you'll love the film more.
Best 2018 film by far for me, it blew ur head away and got its stuck in my mind for couple days, i re watch the dance ending over and over again and it was so beautiful in some kind a way idk what, but it was beautiful and terrified at the same way .
So much talent on one stage. Really liked the new film. It was amazing. The original is one of my all time favorites so I'm happy to say I really enjoyed the new Suspiria.
Tilda got me at "It's very important not to be liars" and then goes on to talk passionately about Herr Oberdorf. Delusion is strong with this film and outside of it. I enjoyed it very much and hope to see this group soon at work again and also with Mr. Yorke's spellbinding soundtrack duties. Have I heard talk about a sequel?
DVD comes out January 29, 2019! This is one of my top 10 movies of all time. Such an artistic, terrifying take on the story. I hope they continue the story with two more movies!!!
Dakota Johnson's performance alone made me realize that I'm the worst. Hear me out. I didn't realize when I criticized Robert Pattison for Twilight that I was being an ignorant tool. Even as he did other things. I didn't realize when 50 Shades came out that Dakota Johnson was more than that part. I sure as hell do now. And not only that, I realize that I was being unduly critical of things of which I am ignorant. For real life changing moment. I don't know anything about anything and I'll be damned if I get caught feeling falsely wise again. 😂
What is it about Dakota that just sucks you in? Like every subtle expression on her face, the way words escape her mouth so gracefully you can almost taste them.. She has such an aura of mystery and sensuality about her, it's maddening. No....? .... just me? Ok... 😆
The fact "Black Panther" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" were nominated are more proof that the Oscars -- and all media awards, really -- can't be taken seriously.
Nominations at least for: -Editing -Cinematography -Sound Editing -Director -Lead Actress -Supporting Actress -Song (Suspirium) And if there is any justice in this world, a posthumous nomination as Best Supporting Actor for the great Lutz Ebersdorf.
Brits reading, correct me on this if I’m wrong, but it sounds to me as though it’s used to separate two vowels (usually two of the same vowel) that would fuse the two words and cause confusion, e.g. Tildand Dakotand, etc. The R creates that hard separation. Yes? I’m assuming because it’s done in similar situations in the Romance languages for this reason.
Can someone explain what she was saying when talking about hiring a Dr. Who just showed up and not a paid actor? About spilling the beans and them wanting the real deal.
Nothing that really matters. Best original song, best score, best production design, best costume design. Maybe sound categories or cinematography. That’s it though
I wish he would manspread. I wouldn't mind checking it out. It was kind of a waste seeing Dr. Kempler naked at the end knowing it was all fake. But at least we got a glimpse of the two detectives without pants.
@@tophers3756 I ride the train quite often and I don't often see people spread their legs, no need to call it manspreading when women can and do, do it too. Rude people are rude, stop vilifying men
Honestly I am not sure why they even called it Susperia as the only similarities are a Coven of Witches who run a Dance Company...The original actually was colorful, fun, gory, and the soundtrack by Goblin was outstanding...The "remake" was without fun, minimal color, mute, and the soundtrack while matching the scenes was boring...
And yet mediocre nonsense like "Black Panther" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" get nominated for Best Picture. If you think thats worth a "LOL" then you're either incredibly immature or spiteful.
I mean if you like horrible acting and a non existent story than I guess I could see why you would like the original more, but you’re right, to each their own.
Why is an average remake like this being talked about while an original masterpiece like Hereditary has wowed critics and audiences alike. Total bullshit
The film was different from the original with a lot of themes Luca had put on it to make layers and muted colors. It was tedious, pretentious and not profound as what it should be.
I think about 30mins could have been done without for sure. Also the movie got out of character at different points. For example when they play the tracks by Thom Yorke that have grunge type guitar riffs it all seems like music that is out of place for this kind of movie. Also the images during the nightmares weren't cohesive in quality. Some of them looked very "art school project" like. During the ritual scene, the jaba the hut looking character with sunglasses looked more funny than scary, it ruined the tension that had built up to that point. and once dakota had to carry that scene with actual dialogue and not just dramatic face gestures, she couldn't do it worth a damn. Chloe Moretz acting crazy was so corny and you can tell it is her right away. I didn't know that swinton had played the old man but you can definitely tell that it is a costume and the fake "old man" way of speaking is hard to understand a lot of the times. Rather pointless to not hire an actor and to continue with this stupid "feminist" bullshit. I don't think it is an entire waste of time but I think that the way guadagnino is referred to during this entire press tour is a bit much. "One of the best directors"?? motherfucker doesn't even have enough hit or cult classic movies under his belt to prove that.
mightytaiger mightytaiger The josef scenes should have been cut out and had nothing to do with the plot , nor Susie’s character at all and it was unrelated, even to her converting to Mother Suspirium. What I thought it was cohesive was in its themes , I feel like Susies reveal to be Suspirium didn’t even pay off at all and the film expects you to know the Three Mothers mythology . That’s why the last sequence during the reveal it was just a mess, just like the blood bath that followed . Ha. It was still an beautiful arthouse film with an awesome score, and the human pretzel scene is one of the most horrifying scene in cinema , that’s for sure.
@Alba Torres Seeing the original and Luca's version. I understand his vision during his film there was a Male dominance to war and authority and also the human mind particularly the female mind. SUZY character along with the other young women seem to have a history of abuse either sexual or physical. Suzy was locked in closets and was beaten as a child. I do believe the mother was mentally I'll and truly wanted her daughter to survive. The mothers love she never felt touched her towards the end of the film killing off the Markos witches. Also giving the psychologist closure on his wife's death. I believe there will be a second film like Inferno.
