Join us for an exiting journey into the fascinating world of boutique amplifiers as we unveil the captivating story of the rise and fall of one of Germany's most esteemed boutique amplifier brands, Kitty Hawk.
Thomas gets his hands on an early Kitty Hawk Junior, showcasing its tonal qualities and, as usual on the Academy of Tone, comparing it to his own creation, the AMP1.
But that's not all - 2 exclusive interviews that promise to unravel the mysteries surrounding Kitty Hawk. Thomas sits down with Gundolf Roy, delving into the brand's journey with captivating insights and firsthand anecdotes. Additionally, Blues-Jazz guitarist and tone connoisseur, Gregor Hilden, shares his experiences with the 1982 Kitty Hawk Standard that he used on his early albums and tours, giving insight into the allure of Kitty Hawk before returning to his vintage Fender combos.
Discover the origins of Kitty Hawk, rooted in a late 70s music shop venture by the Roy brothers, as they pioneered the distribution of rare American boutique amplifiers like Dumble and Mesa Boogie in the Ruhr area.
Despite Howard Alexander Dumble's legendary status now, he was relatively unknown in Germany at the end of the 1970s. Thanks to the Roy brothers, a good dozen of his combos were exported to Germany. The amp chassis were built in the US and shipped to Germany, sometimes without transformers or cabinets. Thus, the cabinets and some parts were installed in Germany. As demand increased and deliveries from Dumble dwindled, Kitty Hawk had to source more missing parts and even have their transformers made in Germany. With this learning curve, Kitty Hawk later developed some amps of their own design, heavily influenced by Dumble and Mesa-Boogie (sometimes both, in the same amp!).
As the years progressed, Kitty Hawk ventured into crafting their own innovative designs, shaping a distinctive line of tube amps, switching systems, and rack gear that left an indelible mark on the boutique amplifier landscape of the 80s.
Don't miss this immersive exploration of Kitty Hawk's legacy and the evolution of boutique amplifiers - tune in to Academy of Tone 196!

The 'dumble' sound was the one I was waiting for. With the 1Control and the blubox on black 2x12 the Amp1 works really well. Thanks Thomas. I used it last weekend on a gig. The dynamic in the sound was great.

Bought a early “script logo” Kitty Hawk Junior from Gregor, almost 15years ago. That sweet Overdrive Channel, wow, that was really something special. But heavy af! Great conversation. Gets me back to the “old” days 😊

It was about 1985 when I visit a music shop in munich. Another person played an Marshall stack and I thought, what a harsh, shrill sound. They had an acoustic combo, which sounds much better. More bluesy, with more feelings. I bought the acoustic combo. It was heavy with an Electro Voice 12" Speaker. Later I bought an Marshall JMP1 and tried to combine both amps.

I remember h TJ hose brown acoustic combos too... 😊 there were good, but I was almost only into rock back then... my musical horizon started to opened up just a year later or so..😂 Greetings, Thomas

Hay Thomas, on the AmpX have you considered using a material for the display that wouldn't scratch Especially for around the effect parameters knobs?

Hi Thomas ...concerning "keep it small". -> Very well done .. .. Ok ..fair enough ... means we guys have to wait .. for AmpX, for your signature guitar, for 1Control a.s.o. .. But ... probably not as long as you had to wait for a new Dumble Amp back then ... or 10 years you have to wait today for a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt 😀

Hi Thomas, in your A-B Test I think the the Amp-1 gives you more overtones from the guitar what I really like. Do you have the same feeling or is it only fine tuning? Thank you very much I'm a great fan of your products. BR Thomas from Hamburg

I felt the AMP1 was a bit juicier, the Kitty Hawk a touch dryer maybe more woody fenderesque.. I like both! I guess that is the different nature of each circuitry..😊

It might help to show the guys how to control the amp1 via midi control boards doing similar things as 1Control ? E.g. how to set the low gain mode or the "power soak" via midi control ... And sure... i can remember that (i call him) the "flying dutchman" already did this in his video (a couple of years ago) about setting the low gain mode via Boss MS-3... but at least I can't remember an episode where 1Control was directly contrasted with midi control boards
@BluGuitar
@BluGuitar 6 месяцев назад
Good point: all those parameters are controllable with midi or Remote1 or 1Control.. many ways to do the same things We could do an episode that shows all those options side by side…

And now the most important question: Will the AmpX be possible to reproduce the Kitty Hawk circuit? 😅😊 Or the dumble? Both are simple analog circuits. If I understood the concept of the AmpX right, we can buy a Blugprint with the Kitty Hawk circuit.
@BluGuitar
@BluGuitar 6 месяцев назад
Yes, AMPX can do it... one day we also will offer those. But we start with more mainstream amps first

I just have seen a video on RU-vid, in which a Peavy Classic 30 Amp war repaired. May be its interesting for you, how other amps are designed. Title: "The Designer of the Peavey Classic 30 should be CASTRATED!"
@BluGuitar
@BluGuitar 6 месяцев назад
I took many amps apart in my life. I know a lot of them are not easy to access… But it also depends a lot on what you expect and what it is… sometimes it’s not a clever design, but it could be much better- that’s a pity…
