yes on house to garage wall is a partition wall. yes on ceiling in garage, that is from a conditioned space to an unconditioned space and a partition ceiling. on mini split there is no duct loss.

Sorry I am not remembering as this was some time ago. either way, the numbers are so close it will not matter. you do want true length x width.

ACCA has the password, I do not. I would recommend you save a portion of the house as one file and then the remainder of the house on a second file. then add it all up to get your equipment sizing.

@@KenTraining Hi Ken, I already had Cool Calc. The software is very inaccurate and has lots of bugs which they admitted too. They were descent enough to give me a refund, in my case. This is why I am working thru MJ8ae. I ran into the same issue you did, with not enough rows or the windows until I realized I needed to group them by the Glass Sched tab first, for the window height and eve overhang H-X-Y. That freed up about 3 rows. Most homes built in the last 40+ years will have the same window and sliding door fabrication. In my case, all dual pane, vinyl. So, all the same U value with the blinds at 45°. Other than the H-X-Y stated and Glass Direction, MJ8ae only cares about how many total sq-ft to allow for in which outside wall. That brings me to my question. You subtracted the window and doors areas from your walls before entering a value. Are you sure this is correct? The RU-vid video attached to MJ8ae does not mention that this is required. I haven’t read all 628 pages of my MJ8, but it would seem the MJ8ae spread sheet would take this area into account in the background calcs. I suspect this is wrong on your spread sheet and it would explain why your total BTUs for the home is way off from the rule of thumb you would actually use to pick the unit and why the cooling BTUs are too low for Texas. Anyway you did a great job all the same. I know that is a load of work to put together. I like your cheat sheet. I have a similar one, but I would use your one next time. Cheers Grant

@@grantlloyd23 I was able to confirm you need to enter the net wall values in MJ8ae. I was able to confirm this in 2 methods. 1. At the top of the column it states to enter the Net value. In addition to that, I took a filled out MJ8ae form and subtracted out the windows and the wall heat load values did not change. Had the excel sheet taken the window area into consideration this number would have changed.

@@KenTraining You are right Ken. (Not the way I would have use an Excel spread sheet today. I would have had it do the work, but I think MJ8ae has been around a while). In MJ8 pg 506, A7-8. It says; Net wall area (SqFt) = Gross wall area - Window area - Door area. Hard to argue with that ☺. So thanks for following up, correcting me and getting me back on track. I’m in California BTW, East Bay area. It gets stinking hot here. AC seems to run okay but the ducting is pathetic. I am going thru this to find the correct CFM values for each room. Then I will rip out the nasty flex hose spider system and redo it in insulated sheet metal with main trunk system and test that, before I start replacing the mechanical units. Cheers.

not the chimney, it is based on either year of construction or blower door test. My house is 43 years old and is a very leaky home due to general construction practice back then.

@@KenTraining what are the numbers for each selection? And are you able to override with an actual number if you were to run a blower dorr test…

@@thefred0215 you are correct there is no manual override to input your numbers. All I see is the drop down selection.

@@KenTraining Thanks much. Your spread sheet. It did work. Is there any reason the result for heating and cooling would not be applicable for sizing a mini split system?

@@joe800096 Sizing should be the same for a mini split. Let me know how your project turns out. Do you like the Mr. Cool Mini Splits or who do you like?

@@KenTraining The reason for that question came from one of the disclaimers on the front end of the speed sheet. It states use is for single zone heating and cooling. Im not partial to any one manufacturer. These units are likely made by the same few producers anyway.

@@KenTraining your method has me intrigued now. I have the sheets filled out with your video help and U values. I would like to follow up with the correct U values for how my home was constructed. I was planning on ordering the 8th abridged if that would match your table references.

@@rogeremeadows as far as I know you only need the abridged version. I only have the full version so I can't confirm this.

@@KenTraining thank you. I finished the speed sheet with your U values. Will get the 8th edition and do some updates. Checking my data now, for some reason the Manual J is showing low for cooling tons for what I actually have in the house. Interesting project and appreciate your work.
