The Adelaide Sustainable Building Network hosted an engaging and informative afternoon about the role that Community Circular Hubs can play on the transition to a circular economy.
A relatively new concept, a Circular Hub provides a full suite of circular services in a “one-stop-shop” . These multi-purpose facilities provide residents convenient access to circular services including repair hubs, library of things, resource drop-offs, education, and a community gardens, and more. These hubs can improve the environmental sustainability, affordability, and social cohesion of a community. Very few examples of Circular Hubs are found internationally. South Australia has an opportunity to strengthen its position as leaders in the circular economy transition by developing these facilities across the State - making them a core part of community infrastructure.
This recorded panel discussion was faciliated after presentations and workshops conducted previously in the day by Kat Heinrich and Shani Wood. Shani is a lead educator for Green Industries SA with over 15 years’ experience in sustainable waste management. She led the implementation of Holdfast weekly FOGO service and compostable bag trial in supermarkets. Shani has a science degree in biodiversity and conservation. Kat is a Director and Principal consultant at Rawtec. Over the past decade, Kat has helped shape public policy and guided industries towards more circular practices. She has developed Circular Hub concepts for several councils in SA.
