hello Pam. sorry my horrible inglish, but i have at the moment no translater. Thank you so much for your supervideo.I also work a lot with metall clay silver and i make a lot of finger rings with different textures. so my question is : can i use the AGS Gold betwenn the silver pieces on a ring ond can i polishing this with a little metallpen. or do you think this gold is not good for applying to a ring because the owner will loose the gold when he weare it every day? thank you so much for your answer... I have put gold on rings, but only in recessed areas. If the fingers rub the gold, then it will wear off over time.

The instructions specify to add glycerin. Have you ever added this into the accent gold?
@PamEast
@PamEast Год назад
The original directions called for glycerin, but I did not find it necessary. It makes the product unnecessarily gummy when it dries out and harder to rehydrate. If you leave it out, it dries back to powder and rehydrates easily later.

Pam, could the Ultralite mini kiln be used for these golds?
@PamEast

I haven't actually tried it, but maybe? You would need a longer firing since it doesn't get as hot as a torch. I'd suggest doing a small test first.

Yes, you can do it without a kiln. A torch will work. But you need to depletion gild the silver first. Here is a video on how to do that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y4xycN783gA.html

I have only used it on fine silver. It will not work well on a metal that gets dark or fire scale during firing.

Hi Pam, Amazing videos- thank you! I’m wondering if a more diluted mix would give you a softer yellow result? I’d like a slightly graduated yellow colour. Alternatively I may need to refer to your patina video! Thank you! Karen

I don’t think I see any info here of how to get rid of all the burnishing marks, and discussing how or if the polishing affects the gold. This part seemed rushed. Also, why only show and give butane times? Seems to leave out us who use a proper jewelers torch? Otherwise lovely
@PamEast
@PamEast 4 года назад
I do my best, but there's only so much I can cover in a short free video. I find that tumbling takes care of the burnisher marks and makes it all uniform. Tumbling will not negatively impact the gold. Take care with polishing. Abrasives will remove the gold. It's pretty thin. Firing the gold is more a matter of watching the color than what torch you are using. I use a butane torch since that's what's easiest for video/demo purposes. However, so long as you keep an eye on the color of the metal it really doesn't matter what torch you use. Have fun!

I am teaching myself these techniques. I have done all the research and all the required products have been purchased and I am waiting for them to arrive. I have a question??? Accent rose gold, you say that using a torch for firing won’t work. Have you ever tried it? If you did try using a torch for firing the rose gold, what would be the result? Would it bond, but not come out the correct color? Have you ever tried it?
@PamEast
@PamEast 7 месяцев назад
I haven't tried it, but only because I understand the problems. Rose gold is made by mixing a small amount of copper in with the gold. When you heat copper in open air it oxidizes. This would cause it to blacken and likely flake off.

@PamEast

Yeah, it's a tiny amount. Gold is expensive stuff! One of the reasons I like using it as an overlay, rather than trying to make pieces out of pure gold. It really keeps the cost down. Yes, you can quench it. No problem. :)

Would you set the stone before or after using the accent gold?
@PamEast
@PamEast Год назад
If you're going to set a stone after firing anyway, I'd do the gold first. If you want to set a stone to fire in place it would depend on the stone. I would not trust a low fire stone like a garnet or peridot, but high fire stones sapphire and CZ would be fine to do the gold after.

Hi Pam, Thanks for the informative video. My question is: My pieces are not flat, they are more dome shaped. I usually fire them in a bowl with vermiculite face down to keep the shape. can I fire the accent gold the same way? Also, I touched my piece after removing it from the kiln. I think I heard that it should be refired to remove finger prints. I don't have a torch, so I need to refire in the kiln. How long and what temp do I need to do that? Or is it possible to just wipe with alcohol or something instead of refiring? Thanks so much, Ruby
@PamEast

I would fire the gold face up. You can still nest it on vermiculite. As for finger prints, just clean it with denatured alcohol and you should be fine. no need to refire. have fun!

Dear Pam, I am a great fan of yours from your “how to use your kiln” on AMCAW, to your tutorials on enamels (i have both the CD and i even found the 2007 book). I am only a beginner at metal clay, so i love your advice. Today i was happy to find your RU-vid on Accent Gold. I followed your advice TO THE LETTER and used a torch (i shouldn’t have i hate using the torch), anyway i failed! It’s as though the gold became grain and spread itself to the silver. It felt like the silver was going to melt too :o( The piece is a hollow form bead Art Clay silver. Can i redo it? Can i save it if i sand it down? Please help!

If you're doing an open shelf firing for Accent Gold for Silver pre-heat the kiln. If you're carbon firing Rose Gold and/or Accent Gold, start in a cold kiln and let it come to temperature

Hi Pam! Thanks for this video. Been trying out new techniques of adding gold to my work and this looks like a great option for me. I have a couple questions- Do you think it's possible to use stencils with this technique? Does it stick onto the metal once it dries to keep it from spreading all over the piece? Will it flow at all during the firing process or will it stay put? Hoping to use this technique on the sides of ring shanks and looking for the best possible outcome. Thanks!
@PamEast
@PamEast 2 года назад
Hi Hannah, So glad you liked the video! It does stick to the metal once dry, but if you brush it with your fingers you can rub it off or move it around. So don't touch it until after it's fired! It will not flow during the process. It's well behaved and stays put. Bear in mind it IS a very thin layer of gold. An area that might get rubbed a lot (like the side of a ring getting rubbed by adjacent fingers) will eventually wear off. Good luck! I hope this helps!

Thanks for all the practical info - I heard that you can also use these products in the green ware stage before firing - you did not mention this aspect & if so is it equally effective?
@PamEast
@PamEast 3 года назад
I have not used Accent (tm) products on greenware, but I have seen Aura Gold used that way successfully. Just remember the longer a piece is fired, the more subtle the effect is going to become since the gold will absorb into the silver with extended heat and time
@CarolAnnArtisan
@CarolAnnArtisan 4 года назад
Pam, I mixed the Accent Rose Gold just as you said and it looked very smooth in the container. After applying it to the fired fine silver (right out of the kiln with no surface prep), it looks grainy to me. The Accent Gold looks smoother. They both appear to be the same consistency in the container. Have you seen this happen before with ARG? Thank you!
@PamEast
@PamEast 4 года назад
Occasionally I've seen both products come out a bit grainy after firing, however I found that adequate burnishing with an agate burnisher and then tumbling took care of it. I ended up with a smooth finish. If the product chips of flakes then it was not fired adequately.
@milou22rh
@milou22rh 4 года назад
Hello. Wonderful video :) Will gold chip off after some time or will it stay there forever? Thank you
@PamEast
@PamEast 4 года назад
It won't chip off. The gold and silver are molecularly bonded. However, it IS a thin layer. If applied to an area that is going to have a lot of touching or wear, such as a ring, it will wear through over time. Piece such as pendants and earrings should be fine though.

@@heyyo4640 The problem with trying to fire it without carbon is the copper that gives it the rose tone will oxidize. The way to brighten it up after firing (assuming you've carbon fired) is to burnish it. But it does have a coppery tone. I think it's pretty but it's not for everyone.
