Most people in countries such as sweden, denmark and other small countries learn alot of their english via television, which is mostly American. I met a Dane who was on vacation in England and he could have passed for a very awkward American. Though it does depend on which accent you are trying to mimic. For example the lady in this video sounds very australian/new zealandish.

Forgive me but: A carbonated *drink* is usually a _läsk_, or _läskedryck_. Carbonated *water* is usually _mineralvatten_, _buteljvatten_ or _sodavatten_, or just _soda_. The word *lawyer* would be _jurist_ (not necessarily an _advokat_). A concept like *gym shoes* can also be _gympaskor_, _gympadojor_, etc., depending on context. Also, the word *herb* is _ört_ (it is *herbs* that is _örter_), but now I'm going to far... ;) So, you are right, we have different dialects in Sweden, almost as diverse as in the UK. And the accents and dialect don't only differ geographically (I was born in Stockholm, and so were most of my grandparents parents), but also between generations, as is evident here. I'm at least twice your age ;-)

@YipYip1985
@YipYip1985 10 лет назад
Danish and Norwegian are very similar in writing, but pronounced somewhat different. Swedish is similar in many words but far from all, and pronounced in a third way. Not all Swedes understand Danish and Norwegian. Icelandic is not as similar. and most importantly they don´t incorporate loan words. They make up new Icelandic words. Some words you can sort of guess what they mean but in just as many cases you have no idea at all.

GetLucky I have to disagree. 95% of Swedes would definitely not understand a Norwegian speaking as he would with other Norwegians. I don´t know where you are from but in my experience Norwegians can speak a bit simpler with Swedes so that they get it. I have relatives in Norway and when they speak, I´d guess about 10% of Swedes get it. But yes in written form it is much easier to understand.

Actually, swedish grammar is pretty straightforward and similar to english. There are some different things, but honestly it's not too hard for an english speaker. They're both germanic languages so swedish isn't that hard grammar wise for an english speaker. I've been studying swedish.

In Sweden we are taught English from a very young age, until we finnish High School. We also never dub movies and teenagers are surrounded by the English language constantly, so I would say that she is pretty averrage in her English skills:) not saying she is bad, cause she isn't, but most people are that good here:) I don't want this to sound like bragging, but Swedes are generally some of the best in the world at speaking English as their second language:) (btw, I'm dyslectic so if there are any mis spellings...^^)

What's the difference between accent and dialect?
@herrfriberger5
@herrfriberger5 8 лет назад
+panda in the city That's not very well defined. It differs somewhat between everyday usage and how linguists use the term, and also somewhat between countries. But most would probably say that accents is mainly about how you pronounce words and phrases, while a dialect usually also implies some differing vocabulary or syntax/semantics (from the official branch of a language).
@kkkaimv5852
@kkkaimv5852 8 лет назад
+Sven Ekeberg This ^^^ Accents are just how you pronounce things, but dialects are kind of like spin-off languages. For example, British english and American English are dialects. This means that they change their sentence structure and spelling as well. Aluminum = Aluminium. It's alright to say "She went to hospital" instead of "She went to _the_ hospital" and words that end in er in english might end in re in british english. Center; Centre, Specter; Spectre. British and American are very similar when compared to other dialects of other languages however. A good example of extremely diverse dialects is languages found in China. Often enough, the difference between Mandarin dialect and other dialects can be so huge that even the most simple words are spelled and pronounced entirely differently. The mandarin 老师 [Lao shi] in Fuzhou dialect is [Sin nan].

That's like saying that foreginers who come to Sweden and learn Swedish have an X-language accent; It's generally accepted, in language science, that persons over the age of 20 simply cannot learn how to immitate any other pronounciation ("accent") than their own. Given the fact that pupils in Sweden start at an early age with English as a subject, it depends on what accent their parents/teacher has got. So, many Swedes do have a "non-Swedish" accent, simply because that's what they were taught

Her english isn't that good and she sounds a bit stiff.. One sentence takes forever and theres no flow. Im not a 100% swede but a lot of my friends are and their english is flawless and frankly much better than hers. My point being, swedes are much better at english than this.
@RavenCorvinus
@RavenCorvinus 9 лет назад
How good one is in the English language varies between everything from regional culture and generation. I've met a whole lot of friends whom had horrible English accents and then I've also met people with perfect accents. So speaking from my personal experience Swedish people are really good at English. But not always fluently perfect. I would probably say something like 30% have a decent American accent in their English speach. Though i can only speak for my friends. And this video she is very obviously trying to over pronounce the words to get them as correct as she knows them. Which in turn slows down the whole process.
@ItsJohannaaa
@ItsJohannaaa 9 лет назад
that's a typical problem for us, it often sounds "stiff" since the flow isn't the same in both languages. Or we try to "over-pronounce" it which prevents it from having the same flow. But of course how good you are at a language varies from person to person. Some, like me, have practiced from a very young age and speak english frequently which makes it a lot easier. Others just... aren't that good.

One day the site agent's son, who was dyslectic and did not speak english very well, walked right up to him and asked him where he could find a dumbsucker. Our foreman was completely oblivious as we all started laughing madly. You see, the swedish word for vacuum cleaner -"dammsugare" basically means dustsucker. Where "damm" (pronounced "dumb") means dust. Took a while before we'd let him forget that one! =D

I experienced the problem you're describing this summer when i went to Hungary (I was there for a music festival but whatever) nobody, and i mean NOBODY speaks english down there, nobody in stores, nobody on the streets. Some bartenders spoke english but it was rare. And i can guarantee you that if you go to Sweden you wont have that problem. I'd guess that atleast 90% of swedes can speak decent english and could give you directions and help you out

There are exceptions obviously. I have no idea how old said grandma is though. In any case, I mentioned likelihood, nothing else. There are always exceptions.

Swedes are really good at english, especially young people, because we are taught english in schools from the age of like 9, several classes a week, and we learn a lot of english from TV and social media, so most swedes don't speak english with a "swedish accent"

Having a slight European accent in the United States is more like an advantage. As long, as people can understand you, and you have the vocabulary, they admire you for mastering their language. Believe me. I speak from experience. I'm from Hungary, and have been living in the US. for 23 years. Just because I have a little accent, I walked into management positions more than once. They were just offered to me. Now I'm in car sales, and people just buy from me, and can't say no. I make over $120K.

My class started at the age of 6! You really notice how great swedes are at english when you look at the younger generations. My sister is 12 now, she could talk english fluently and understand it perfectly when she was 10. Pretty awesome.

I lived in Sweden for three years, and very few Swedes, with the exception of my gf's middle sister who spoke fluently and sans accent, sound as good as you do. I love how many words are the same in Swedish and English. Salt. Job. And even Swedish/German analogs: förstå/verstehen to understand (I know they're not spelled similarly, but they sound close. Arbeta/arbeiten to work. It was fun learning Swedish (most of which I've forgotten in 20 years). I am learning Irish soon, since I am Irish.

That's probably because you're younger and possibly mostly relate exercise to gym class. I don't know if someone doing some other type of exercise would call it "gympadojjor" or "gympaskor" etc. Besides, "gympa" and "dojjor" is very informal, it's more of a slang than a proper word.

I'm a musician currently studying at the Swedish aesthetical program for music and art, and the girl is coming to our Uni to discuss PR, as part of her own sky-rocketing career. So I decided to check her out. Also, you should check out the videos I watched about popping zits for 2 hours. That also speaks of me as an intellectually diminished being. Right? 0/10 troll, would not read again.

you're swedish though, so it's not surprising that you're far off with that. He mispronounces every other word and mumbles himself through most of what he says. He also uses an intentionally silly voice so he can mask his english and pretend he's being goofy all the time. His english is not "really good"... god damn

Shonaripa Most swedes speak quite good English, (especially compared to Americans speaking Spanish or any other foreign languages) and pewdiepie lives abroad (in an English speaking country) where he uses English all the time. I would also say that Scandinavians speak much better english than Americans do. (Not that accents have anything much to do with speaking a language well).

Noah Ruel Hahaha, I live in Sweden, I've seen norwegians, swedes, finns and danes all my life. To say that they speak english better than americans is a COMPLETE exaggeration and/or lie. Ofcourse swedes speak better english than americans speak spanish, because ENGLISH IS THE COMMON ONE THAT'S SEEN AND HEARD EVERYWHERE! So you can't even begin to compare. Pewdie has only lived abroad briefly and his english still sucks. I don't mean just accent, I mean bad grammar, pronounciation and so forth. Every point you made is inaccurate and simplified.

No, it's how they talk. There is no other accent, the accent in the 16th century wasn't even that different, our words were just longer and overdone. Check out the latest video on InteractiveSketch to hear what I sound like (I'm a Swede, but my accent is really British, I speak both languages equally with English being the first one I ever used.) and what Albin sounds like. (Your typical Swedish accent. There are a lot of accents, like the Scanian one which is really odd.
