Same here. Although there are a number of Oklahoman accents, really... country Oklahomans and city Oklahomans can sound really different even if they live close to each other, to say nothing of the noticeable regional variants. My grandmother lives in the country a bit past Harrah, and she's got a real noticeable one. It's in the verb sounds, I think.

I cannot stand people that refer to Oklahoma as "midwestern" It's normally people from California or people from the NE that have either never been outside OKC or think midwestern means "middle of the country." We are culturally southern and considered part of the outer Appalachian ring. In fact, the western portion of the United States does not begin until you get past the 100th meridian starting at the Texas panhandle.
@judymiller3581

@zachconant7031
@zachconant7031 8 лет назад
You could argue with different people since Oklahoma was indian territory, etc. Like Missouri being south because of slaves. I'm not gonna argue, i think Oklahoma has southern aspects, but the panhandle is more western or midwestern. Just like here in Sumner county and southern Sedgwick we have more of a drawl than Oklahoma and northern Texas(in my experience) . Now this is my experience, and in lets say Wichita(bigger town) , they sound like the guy in video.. however, i was talking about the rural places in Southern Kansas. When i lived in Texas, i lived in a suburb of Dallas, and so people thought we moved there from the country, which was correct, but the country of southern Kansas, since we had more of a twang/ drawl. In wichita, (bigger town) i have told people that i used to live in Texas, and they go "so thats where your twang is from" but i only lived there for a short amount of time when i was little, they just don't have real accents in wichita. Then we have the whole "Is Kansas Southern" Well, in a geographic sense, it is kinda split. south west kansas feels like a real desert compared to north west. North East like Kansas city feels just different than the rest. Historically it was also split, and don't judge my family or friends family, but almost everyone i know that they have ancestors who fought in the civil war in Kansas fought FOR slavery. This is due to i guess those who wanted slaves were more in southern Kansas and those who fought against slavery kinda went to Northern Kansas (obviously) Sorry for a rant, but many will say Kansas is no where near southern or southern influence, but my family aint 'north yankees'
@judymiller3581
@judymiller3581 8 лет назад
Nowhere in Kansas do they have more of a southern drawl than Oklahoma. Nowhere. Kansas also has a completely different history. Tell people in Iowa or Michigan that Oklahoma is the midwest. Go to Idabel or Salisaw OK and tell them they are midwestern. You might not make it out. Portions of Oklahoma were Indian territory. Not all and the Indians that inhabited Oklahoma at the time were all aligned with the confederacy. They fought for the south and established a strong southern culture in the state. In fact, the rebel flag still flies near the state capitol. Oklahoma was the number 1 destination for southerners to relocate after reconstruction. It goes much beyond "southern aspects."
@zachconant7031
@zachconant7031 8 лет назад
Judy Miller I agree, except you can't tell me, who has lived in Kansas for most of my life, that some of us don't have a stronger drawl. Did you not hear the guy in the video? No drawl whats so ever. Me? I have more of a drawl.My uncle and great uncle (when alive) sounded like they were from the Carolina's. And like i said, my brother in law as well, he is still alive, and if you want to make a trip to hear him talk then be my guest lol. I'm not trying to tell you that we have a stronger drawl/twang, but in my experience, i have heard a TON of twangs and drawls here BUT i also heard them in Oklahoma and Texas too, but not as much since i was mostly in Tulsa, OKC and when in Texas, around Dallas, all cities or bigger towns. Don't get me wrong, i know there are drawls and twangs there but i also know what i have heard here and your experience is probably different to mine. Since you live there you have obviously heard people talk more and met more people just like i have here. I wasn't even saying that OK was midwestern, you can't judge a state by geography or culture alone, but i think most just say it is a plains state, since the plains don't even end until Mexico. And, some don't even include Texas as the 'south' since it was mostly East Texas so that is why they won't include any states directly north of Texas, only East of there.

I am from Oklahoma and I don't pronounce some of my words the same as in this video. Oklahoma is diverse. Oil, syrup, and some of the others are ones I pronounce very differently. I don't say oyil, I say ohl. I don't say sirup, I say surup. Carbonated beverages can be either Coke of pop. I don't say wosh, I say worsh. The north central and central portions of Oklahoma are in a zone that generally speaks Western Midland and Midland. The western, southern, and southeastern portions of the state speak more Inland Southern. If you go into more rural areas, you will find it much more Southern, especially in the older people. There is not just one Oklahoma accent.

Here in England, UK we say aluminium the same way you've never heard before. I think people from USA pronounce it like Aloominum 😂 I also say pop or fizzy drink. I love how we are all English speaking yet we pronounce things so differently! 👍🏻
@adreabrooks11
@adreabrooks11 Год назад
Canadian speaker here! We also say "aluminum" (ahl-OO-mih-NUM) and, you will note, we North Americans spell it without the "i" in your "ium." I'm in my early 40s, am something of a word nerd, and have never seen the "ium" spelling before your post - or perhaps I just never noticed the "i." Funny enough: because I thought "num" was the only spelling, I always thought that "aluminum" was the original pronunciation, and "aluminium" was just something that got repeated enough to become acceptable. After a moment's research, it turns out I'm not entirely wrong - but only by a thin margin. Sir Humphrey Davy, the Cornish chemist who first isolated the metal, called it "alumium" (which, as far as I know, no on uses!) in his first publication about it. He must not even have liked this name himself, for his later book and future papers called it by the North American favourite: "aluminum." Amusingly, though, his contemporaries voted against him. Davy had previously isolated potassium, calcium, barium and a few other "iums," and so people started calling it the UK-favoured "aluminium." To their ears, it fit better with Davy's other discoveries, and sounded more classically scientific. Despite "num" being the original term, "ium" became the favourite - including in North America. However, as more chemists isolated it, and common people began interacting with the metal, some (including Webster's Dictionary) went back to the original paper for the name, while others (like the Oxford Dictionary) sourced the scientific consensus. This led to the divide we have today. So, apparently, both types of pronunciation have been valid very nearly since the metal's first description. I totally agree: linguistic differences are a fascinating topic - for reasons exactly like this one! Thanks for commenting, and starting me down this rabbit-hole! :)

It depends on where you're from. My grandpa pronounced washer like worsher. Door like the word dough sometimes. He grew up in central and southern Oklahoma. My dad's side of the family sound similar to this video but, they emphasize each syllable. It's literally the stereotypical "country folk married the city folk" thing. The best way I can describe it is the phrase did you and the word literally One side pronounces it dijuh and lit ruh lee. The other did yew and lit ur uh lee or lid ur uh lee. I say it three ways. Dijuh, did yuh and did yew depending on who I'm around. I say literally with a D sound for the T. My dad's family came from Texas too! It makes no sense! It should be thicker than molasses!

Nickoli Lion I absolutely love researching about the history of Oklahoma. Because it is in fact a southern state not midwestern. The only reason people are sure way to classify it is because we were not an actual state during the Civil War. But the Indian territory was made up at five tribes that all signed with the confederacy which would make it a southern state if we were an actual state at that time

Ok, maybe someone can clear this up for me... I was born in Washington, raised up in Oregon, but my dad was born in Oklahoma in 1929 & he moved with his family to New Mexico when he was a little kid (maybe around 4?), but my mom who was born in Michigan but raised up in Washington would sometimes call him an Okie. Anyway, he pronounced things very different from this video & I’m just wondering if anyone is familiar with these pronunciations & where he may have gotten them from: - soda was “sodee-pop” - he NEVER said “you”, it was always “yuh” - when addressing people he’d say things like “well hello there”, “howdy”, often followed up by “young man/lady” - “I reckon” was a common utterance - when working on or building something, or even when considering a particular situation & thinking out loud of how to go about it, he’d say, “what a man oughtta do...” - “holy mackerel!” & “my stars” were common phrases he used when something was surprising or unbelievable to him/blew his mind - he usually didn’t pronounce the “ing” sound at the end of words that had that spelling & just left the “g” off, resulting in a lot of words ending in “in/en” - “ain’t” was definitely a word, & it certainly was in his dictionary - he’d call his grandfather “my granddaddy”, but call his grandma “my grandmother”, his mom “my mother”, but his father “my dad”, & never without the “my” in front - pancakes were “hot cakes” - he would call me “puddin’”, “puddin-head”, “punkin”, or “bug” - grandchildren were always “grandbabies, regardless of gender or age - “boy howdy!”, “great day in the mornin’!”, “that smarts!”, & “hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!” were things he’d say when something hurt him (like getting a shock from an outlet or wiring, smacking his finger with a hammer, or getting the all-too-common “Charlie horse” - “well shoot” to express some amount of disappointment - “fella” or even “feller” - “bellyachin’” meant complaining - he called his thermal long-johns “long-handled underwear” - very cold or hot weather was “colder/hotter than a booger” - and one of my favorites I heard him say was “lawdy, lawdy, lawdy; if it ain’t one thing it’s forty” :) Miss ya dad

Great questions! My take on them would be a few things. The first of which is that my accent is very much a city version of the Oklahoma accent. In more rural areas or depending on surrounding influence, accents here can sound very different. These things he said do very much exist in Oklahoma but a lot of these terms are also a generational thing more than just accent or area. So that probably has a big part to play on some of these things as well I'm guessing.

I’m late to the party, but I’ve heard of some of those and use ‘em myself. 1. I hear people replace “you” with “ya.” 2. I’ve heard “I reckon” another synonym for “I guess” or “I assume.” I like using it 3. Not pronouncing the g in “ing” is common here. 4. I’ve heard “ain’t” a bit. 5. Grand babies, yup. 6. “Well, shoot” or just “oh, shoot!” 7. “Fella” I’ve heard. Perfect word for creature or bud almost. 8. “Quit your bellyachin!” I’ve heard this 😂 Some more that I’ve heard. No idea if they came from Oklahoma, but I sure heard ‘em. 1. Doggone it! 2. Over yonder 3. Instead of “appreciate it”, some say ‘ppreciate it. 4. “Quit your hollerin’” or “stop the hollerin’” 5. “Do what?” 6. “Fixin’ to” I know this one is used in the south too. And I’m sure I left out a bunch! But I wanted to give you a few examples too! :)
@RuinedTemple
@RuinedTemple 2 месяца назад
@Tc-rn8lh Omg yes! He would at least say versions of all of those except 1. & 3. • He used the term "over yonder" A LOT, haha! • Instead of saying some variation of "appreciate it," he'd say, "Thank ye."" And you reminded me of "Do what?" Lol! I know that he used to say that, but I can't really remember the context that it was used in. And he'd NEVER use profanity if he was around kids or in the presence of a female... but there was a handful of times when I had overheard how he spoke to males, especially when they were working together & goodNESS! It wouldn't even sound right, or it'd just sound so foreign because he almost NEVER used swear words in front of me.
@Tc-rn8lh
@Tc-rn8lh 2 месяца назад
@@RuinedTemple Hey there! Instead of using cuss words, I feel as though using mild swear words are more creative and better. That was kind of your father to speak without any profanity to you and other people. People say “do what” whenever they didn’t catch what someone said or they’re in utter shock of what they have to do. To note: That this is seen as impolite. “Excuse me” or “pardon me” is more ideal and appropriate to use at least in a formal setting. Example 1: Billy: Hey Liam, could you climb that 20 foot tree and grab my cat for me? Liam: Do what?! Are you nuts or what? Or.. Example 2: Billy: Can you go grab me a basket? Liam: Do what? I didn’t hear you. To wrap things up, it was cool of you to share things about what your father would say. I’m trying to learn more about my culture and how we used to speak, just to get some insight of how it was and how it is now!

While they almost universally have a distinct Southern type accent their kids of course don't because they went to school here. You sound like you could be from Fresno or Bakersfield as Oklahoma. I've noticed too that my older family members in OKC have a Southern drawl while their kids have it less and grandkids don't have it at all. Kind of sad to see regional accents fading away.

Hey Garrett, thanks for the lesson. Very helpful. Also wanted to let you know that Aluminium is how the rest of the world says 'aluminum'. When aluminium was first discovered, a scientific memo (don't know the actual name scientists use for it) was released worldwide to let the scientific community learn of its discovery. However, there was a typo. Instead of spelling it "aluminium", it was incorrectly spelt, "aluminum". The releasing scientists soon realised their faux pa and followed up with a correction. The rest of the world reacted accordingly and changed their spelling, but the USA decided it liked it spelt better as they had it, so didn't change it. Hope this helps. Steve.

"What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?" That is the strangest question that always comes up in these "accent tag" videos. What IS that? WHO does it -- and, more importantly, WHY? You say: "That is called teepeeing here in America". I think it's the last three words that are the most significant there -- because I've never heard of such a weird (not to say highly wasteful!) practice occurring in any other part of the world! What makes it all the more mystifying is that I've yet to hear anyone offer any other answer than ...teepeeing.
@EagleGarrett

You're absolutely right, it is wasteful and totally doesn't make sense. But to answer your question, it's done as a prank in most cases. It's more so vandalism on an lighter scale. It's not done ad much these days but if it is done, it's usually by adolescent teens. I agree with you, it is completely wasteful and pretty pointless. But teepeeing is the official name.
