here’s a walkthrough of my college art portfolio (accepted to risd, harvard, stanford, and umass amherst)! again, my portfolio is definitely flawed, and i don’t know what ultimately got me into these schools, but hopefully this can serve as an example of what can potentially work :)
portfolio starts at 4:23!

damn you can totally tell she knows her shit. I don't like giving artists the complement that they are "talented" because that seems to me like a reduction of their work and effort to some divine chance success. So I'll say this instead: girl you are so SKILLED and I can feel the passion in your work and see your expertise in your artistic and creative decisions. We all know you will just grow to be a better and better artist because you've shown us how introspective you are.

Pro artist here. Your work is already so good, you don't really need to go to art school. I think you don't realize it because you just follow your guts, but some of your pieces are so on point with the contemporary world and your technique is already very strong. Of course your work has still room to evolve and you're still experimenting when it comes to your subjects and approach, and certain pieces are weaker than other. I'm sure some mentorship will be beneficial. But it's just a matter of following your interests and finding what is most important to you. Good luck on your path, being an artist is difficult but also the best job in the world ^^

I'm sorry my hair stood on end when she read the descriptions WHY ARE THEY SO POWERFUL. These artworks really did resonate with me. Every single one of them. Please please never stop making art. You were born to create beautiful things. And you, too, are beautiful, inside and out. I know that self love can sometimes seem like a cheap facade of self convincing and insincere flattery, unattainable. It feels like lying to oneself. I always say love yourself to others, but I find it so incredibly hard to love myself. I interpret your artworks differently, according to my own personal experiences. For example, the artwork emerge. I see it as myself, and my relationship with self love. I would emerge into the light, the light being the crowd, public or other people and I would be an absolute light and motivation to others, telling them that we are beautiful and should love ourselves. Ive always been very confident when im with people and i radiate self love and confidence. But when I turn back into the darkness, alone with myself, and only myself, my bright facade fades into the same darkness and I struggle to practice what I preach in the light, I struggle to see good in myself. Mirror mirror also particularly speaks to me. I do struggle with body image and its something very real to me. I'm no where near overweight, nor do i have any disorders, I'm just unhappy with how I look. I scrutinize every part of myself and dissect everything about me under a microscope. I hold myself to standards so generalised by our society, but less so attainable or healthy. I know comparing myself to others will only hurt me and bring no benefits, but it's something I willingly put myself through every single day. I look in the mirror and I see imperfection, I see unsatisfaction, I see someone that's not enough, I see everything but what is actually there, its my reflection, its me. Even to myself, I become nothing more than a sculpture, an imperfect one that needs to be fixed. I fear instability, I fear the ugliness of truth, I fear death, I fear the unknown, I fear standards, I fear loss, I fear pain, I fear the very reason of my existence, I fear disappointment, I fear trust, I fear endings, I fear regrets, I fear. Yet I love. I love light, I love little things in life, I love imperfect perfections, I love friendship, I love the grand idea that we're all here for a reason, I love people, I love nature, I love animals, I love poetry, I love books, I love stars, I love art, I love words, I love beauty, I love birth, I love beginnings, I love skies, I love peace, I love kindness, I love hope, I love life. Its ok to be scared, lonely, scarred, honest, bare, ugly, fallen, weird, different, broken, we're all like that, because we have so much in us that makes up for all those. We all have light and dark in us, its which side we choose to act on that matters. Its what we leave behind that matters. Its what we do while were still here that matters. Our everyday choices in life lead us to where we were, where we are, and where we'll be, they matter. We matter. You matter. I matter.

Yeah… I feel like the school focus more on other things than teaching you to paint. My university only have one required painting class for the studio art major… only 2 drawing classes, 1 sculpture, 1 ceramic, and 1 3D design course. You need to basically master all the basics and skills before coming in. Pretty disappointing but that’s reality. So I didn’t choose the fine art major. There’s no point.
@RacingPepe
@RacingPepe 3 года назад
No, art school is not meant to teach you how to hold a brush and learn what paint is. That's what high school is for. You need to learn more advanced techniques by yourself, or take a course early on. Anatomy can be studied from books, courses, photos of yourself, exhibitions like Body World as mentioned in the video, RU-vid channels etc. etc. etc. Art school is there to teach you concepts, different ways of thinking, history, advanced techniques directly from people in the industry, how to determine your audience and connect with them and more. You will then proceed to put these to use in the real world by working together with businesses and combining your skills with people from other backgrounds (like 3D, sculpters, videographers and photographers, designers).
@BuzziMuzzi
@BuzziMuzzi 3 года назад
@@RacingPepe I'm sorry I can understand you shouldn't be a complete beginner at art. But this girl's art literally looks like she's already an established painter that has a career selling her work in upstate NY for 10+ years. That's literally her level. If this is the entry level for an art degree, that's ridiculous. You have to agree with that.
@BuzziMuzzi
@BuzziMuzzi 3 года назад
@Laaiba Again, getting straight A's for a master's isn't the same as already being an established artist when entering art school. You must be good, sure, but this girl literally doesn't need to go to art school anymore. That's her level. Idk man just be happy with your overly competitive society in the US but it's ridiculous. In my country (the Netherlands) ALL the universities in our country we have here are Ivy League level (top 100 world univiersity) and it costs us barely anything to study and we don't have that ridiculous competitive society bullshit. You're getting played by your capitalist system thinking you're "good enough" by ruining your mental life trying to belong to the 1% percentile and paying your ass off while really not getting enough returns later in your life.
@felixharrington8597
@felixharrington8597 3 года назад
@@BuzziMuzzi Her work is almost exclusively realism. Sure it's good, but she even stated herself it's not well rounded and learning more styles is something art school teaches. Art institutes are again, not about teaching you how to paint. You should be really decent at painting/drawing/whatever medium you're wanting to major in. It also shows in your work how much time you dedicate to the craft and how serious you are about it. Art school is just to fine tune your craft, help you branch out in concepts and mediums, and to get you connected with making a name for yourself if you haven't already. She also stated she's doing a double major, with something not even related to art. Lots of schools accept much less than this.

First of all, congratulations on all of your hard work. You definitely are deserving of all of the awards and achievement you have received, but you actually deserve so much more beyond titles like these. In line with your own words, I hope you yourself are proud of what you have done. Before you even shared about your struggles with perfectionism, I could sense that you struggled with this, just with how you negated and criticized your work at every turn. I know this is also to not come across as too full of yourself; we are conditioned to be humble and really degrade ourselves, but it's perhaps also so you genuinely don't make it seem like you think you are better than others. But still, I could sense that these are likely the kinds of voices in your own head. To anyone struggling with this, like her, like me, this is just another reminder to be kind to yourself. Yes, it is easier said than done, and I know you already know this. But perhaps hearing it from others will encourage it just a little. Yes, descriptions, and essays to colleges you didn't even intend on attending do require bullshitting, but it is evident that you have invested into your pieces a great deal of thought, and that consciously or unconsciously, they are products, representations of your introspection and thought. In other words, it isn't just fluff! I see that, others see that, whether people connect to it by seeing your pieces or by hearing your articulate words. Rather than negating yourself by saying it is bullshit, rather than setting up even more roadblocks for yourself, let's be more open and encouraging to these vulnerable thoughts, they are really valuable! The words capture the thoughtful insights at the core of your works, and these are so pricelessly precious. Even if you don't like the pieces now, they are a valuable display of your progress as an artist and a human. This is directed toward Jackie, and maybe really toward myself, but to anyone identifying with this, it's really ok to feel good about yourself for a few moments, at any stage you are at :-)

I feel like it's a shame you hate all those paintings when so many people feel amazed and inspired by them. Maybe if you try to view them through our eyes, as not just a result of your efforts, but as a piece of art - it could help you accept them? And don't be afraid to be sincere. Even if you think your descriptions are bs or extra, you can scroll down and see that many people were moved by them; I personally think they added a lot to the paintings. I love your art and I hope you can love it as well.

I think many artists dislike their drawings because theyre tired of looking at them, since the process takes so long I love this artist's paintings (: her analysis on her own work was also very insightful

A lot of artists get used to their pieces while they create them and end up normalising them, and when they're done end up either hating it or change things because its not the "extraordinary piece" they initially wanted to create

Another thing I noticed is I love how your swooshy voidy strokes don't look like smudged brush strokes. They look like swirls that I thought could only be achieved by digital art.

I have no actual understanding of art, except that it looks beautiful and makes me feel things I haven't felt before. but the description for each piece? incredible. you said that its not that deep, and that it was you being extra, but genuinely, each explanation was so well crafted. I loved listening to them.

I don’t consider myself super well-versed in art at all but every single one of your pieces was so profoundly beautiful. And every one of your descriptions made me fall even more in love with it in a way that doesn’t seem like a big sudden leap to make it seem more profound, but simply contextualise it in reference to your life and experiences. You are so talented and I’m so glad that this video popped up on my timeline. Limbo is a painting that will stay with me for a long time!

I love each and every one of your pieces, because not only are they created beautifully (technically and uniquely) but because each has a message and/or story to tell. I think a lot of artists get to caught up in making their pieces 'overly' rendered- focusing only on their technical skills rather than their creative skills. Of course, that doesn't mean you shouldn't include works that exemplify your technical skills! Just don't make 'technical skills' the central idea of your portfolio, if that makes sense!

A perfectionist recognizes another, you criticize your work so much that make me think of my own self. You are a true artist, you can put your feelings in your drawings, you are extremely talented, I hope one day you can see your true self without the criticism, you are amazing, and there are very few artists like you out there. Edit: I searched the meaning of the word “talent” in English (not my native language), and it means someone that has born with a certain skill. At my native language “talento” means working hard and training to acquire an certain skill. Therefore, she is not talented. But has “talento”, which means she worked really hard for getting where she is.
