With the help of a viewer, I investigate the issue of derailments, the kinematic coupling system that causes them and a modification to the system without dismantling the entire body.

Very informative video. I thought I was the only one having derailment issues with this Deltic so I sent it back to Accurascale to fix or refund . After 4 months and some chasing the Deltic was returned and now functions as it should. No explanation was forthcoming from Accurascale as to what the issue was. It is a very delicate loco and there were also bits missing when I first received it and Accurascale have also replaced these parts as well.

I had the same derailing problem. The locomotive ran fine when "light engine" but as soon as the loco was coupled to a rake of Bachmann Mk2's - off it jumped. I sorted the issue by fitting Hunt "stepped" magnetic couplings (which just push into the NEM socket) to loco and the rake of coaches. Problem solved! No more derailing. The removed couplings are stored safely with all the other bits that have fallen off it!

Great video of a very fiddly job Julian. It’s a shame that you had to do this modification but I understand your reasoning behind not wanting to return it to the UK. it would probably have taken months! I admire your patience. Thanks for sharing. Roy.

The problem with derailing is bad track work not the loco, the model railway club I am a member of, use the Deltic to check track work for the correct alignment. The coupling work well under any load.

Thank you for this updated video. I also have been having the same issues. Such a shame on otherwise a fantastic model. When I watch my loco as it derails, it looks like the leading part of the bogie rides up over the rail curve. But there again my layout is not the best laid!

A most interesting and informative video- thank you. Hope that AS get all these issues sorted, I have a Class 37 & Class 31 on order with them 😕

Hi Julian great video mate thanks for putting it on. I've got the class 37 from accurascale on order so it's something to bear in mind with that loco. I've also got problems with my hornby class 91 doing the same thing and I'd not thought of the coupling at the front so it's something that I'll be checking atb Andy

Julian, I assume you have checked the wheel back to backs. If it is just one curve is the track work up to scratch. Sorry to state the obvious as it was a great video.

Hi an interesting video, as my own Deltic suffers this issue on just one corner. I had seen Chris' Melchester Model Railway video a while back...........but haven't modified my own model yet. A couple of other things, did you realise when filming the modifications that the NEM pocket will pull out, vertically as you had the model in cradle, which would have made work alot easier. I only found this out the other day when one fell out of my model. Also the Guard Irons are made of some flexible plastic, if they get snagged on trackwork, the black paint falls off revealing bright yellow plastic underneath, yuck! Lastly I too have resisted the need to open up my model, I have the crew but wouldn't fit them until one of the chains fell off, which happen last week............so rediculously fiddly. I found a post on RMWeb were someone glued the chains to the bogie side just under the original body mount, so they look fixed to it but aren't, I went down that road, and fixed them with a drop of superglue. Nice to see you used Chris' music in you video as a nod to him................All the best and great stuff, Dave.

Did you try checking the wheels had the correct back to back positioning? I have found several models of various makes have such problems corrected by opening out or sometimes, closing the back to back placing of the wheels. Also, the body fixing screws can distort the chassis and cause a derailment.

FYI, (full disclaimer, my Deltic has only run on a rolling road as yet) I wrote to Accurascale Support to ask a couple of questions and to also query them about the derailment issue - in anticipation of getting my Deltic on the track soon. They answered my general questions, but completely ignored anything to do with the derailment issue. They stated that the very few returns that they have received were to do with parts being broken during shipping and nothing else.

Hi Julian. Well, progress of a sort. It's not really acceptable that any model manufacturer allows their models to be released with faults like these. I suspect that the missing guide irons are not somewhere on your layout but inside the loco/in the box/still back at the factory! I don't remember whether you mentioned it in your last video but I would request (demand?) that Accurascale send you a pair of modified kinematic couplings (that hopefully have cured the problem).

Your patience with those fiddly items is admirable. How do you get those tiny screws to stick to the end of your screwdriver? Do you magnetise the screwdriver?

It’s Laughable, ( but not funny ), a company producing models that won’t or can’t run properly, and at the price we pay for models is not acceptable, and immediately takes away the enjoyment that modellers should get. I guess for you Julian it’s a bit of a job to return items. But the only way to hit these manufacturers is to return them even though you did your best to address the issue. If they posed an argument against the fact you altered it then point them to your video. Grr it makes me so angry. I was dubious about paying that kind of money for a (model ) toy train anyway, all the same having a problem like that confirms my though and I won’t entertain buying an accurascale model. I hope they get a load of returns from modellers in the uk. I’m not trying to be spiteful or even single them out but they like all manufacture’s need to up their game. There seems to be far too many quality issues either with construction, finish or running. Thank you for posting.

I'm thinking of leaving off all of the bits that keep falling off my Deltice's as it's driving me up the wall! Chains will be the next I think, but i don't seem to have the derailing problem you have! How many others have left the detail off theirs?
