Been watching youtube for more than a decade now and this is certainly the best most detailed laptop comparison which I've seen which is almost perfect You've even taken care to match the miniscule details so that a difference in performance doesn't show up Definitely my go to channel for any laptop stuff ❤️ Thanks for all the hardwork you put in for us... Just waiting to see you hit a 100k 😊

Watching this on my Y540. Your review of this machine was what convinced me to get it. Thank you Jarrod. As you said in the video, it's the keyboard typing experience, the IOs at the back plus the overall clean aesthetic of the device that I really appreciate. Oh also, I'm not gonna take credit for this but someone mentioned that if you press the Fn key + L key simultaneously, you can turn off the light up 'y' on the lid of y540 to give it an even more muted/stealth look. Cheers!
Good to hear! Yeah I found out about the shortcut to turn off the light after the review went up 😅 I left a "heart" thing on the comment which should rise it up to the top, it had quite a few likes too so hopefully people see it. It wasn't an option on the Y530!
I'm speechless that is the most detailed accurate thorough laptop comparison I've ever seen in the last decade , Perfect Work Jarrod Many thanks for the really hard work you are doing , Amazing!
I overclocked my Lenovo Y540 and undervolted the i7-9750h (-0.140). I am getting great performance. I orginally had the RTX 2060 version, but I returned it and saved 200 bucks to get the gtx 1660 ti version of the Y540. It's a great laptop. I overclocked the GPU 160MHz on the core & 320MHz on the memory and it's been great! With the -0.140 undervolt I have never seen temps above 80 Celsius. I do have the 17 inch version that I got from Micro Center here in Northern Virginia (USA). I purchased the laptop for $999.00. It's a great laptop. I am super impressed. Thanks Jarrod for an awesome review. You seriously are a gem.
@@artug874 The cheapest Y540 (i7-9750h RTX 2060 16GB 17,3 144Hz) I got in Poland cost 1512$ or 6300PLN. The rest was either with 1660Ti or hidden 60Hz display(I had to call to make sure, they are sneaky like that). To get the same specs for Acer 300 I would have to pay 7000PLN, so no-brainer really.
I bought my Helios 300 after watching both your review and Dave's. The machine I bought came with i7-9750H, 17.3" 144Hz panel, RTX 2060, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD + 1 TB (7200 rpm) HDD. SGD $2600 (~ USD $1900). So far so good. Thanks for your help!
The most awaited review of 2019. Very nicely simulated helios settings in Y540 for a fair comparison and custom Y540 comes out with flying colors with less fan noise. But lenovo should get that max fan option back nonetheless. This review again rubber stamps my purchase decision. Thanks ✌
The Helios 300 has already gone on sale for sub 1k a couple of times. 100% the best bang for buck laptop on the market today (in the US). Absolutely killer deal. BTW, this comparison was expertly done! Thank you :)
The y540 back kinda remembers me a ps2, i would go with it as both had simillar performance and if price also is simillar and i was going to buy a laptop, for now i'm with my nitro 5.
@@JarrodsTech Yeah it is the middleground between proffesional and gamer laptop. But yeah my choice is predator, even though i am not the fan of that gamy design, but the power what it holds.Who knows maybe after some little while will come to like the design afterall.
Actually i quite like the blue accents of the Helios 300. If they could remove the two blue strips and the predator word from the lid, leaving just the logo, it would be much cleaner. Also, using a normal font for the keyboard won't hurt
@@JarrodsTech forgot to told you thank you, your video review about the helios 300 was the one who make me decide for it and have the luck to bought it on prime days, good deal!!

BEST LAPTOP REVIEWS ON RU-vid! Can't believe im just finding your channel now, but I am very thankful. So detailed and answered every question I could have thought of. Subbed
I wanted to thank @Jarrod'sTech for making these comparisons as I just bought Y540 last week and it is super awesome! Very good and detailed findings for the Undervolt for CPU and GPU makes Y540 the best value and slim laptop for 2019! Coincidentally my bro bought Helios 300 like two days ago and I have tested it out. Same kind of performances only noticeable lower temps but the max fan is too loud comparing to Y540. Yet the Helios 300 feels like the typical laptop while the slim and clean design from Y540 makes this laptop a compact beast for a traveller like me! Can't thank you enough! Please don't stop making these videos! Never felt this satisfying buying from a product that I already know so much thanks to your video! #JarrodsTechIsTheBest
can you please explain to me how to do this things on my legion. I did the undervolt and it is a great diference, but i'm still not quite sure how to increase to 50 watts and tweek the gpu.
Hey sir can you help to decide. Predator Helios 300(RTX 2060) or any other RTX 2060 laptop. I am buying this after my class 10th so will it last 5 years for gaming?
Probably if you treat it well, but hard to guess based on future game releases etc. For the price and performance on offer it looks like a good pick compared to alternatives
Have been waiting for this ! Looks like I will go with the Y540, it has quiter fans, professional look and no performance gap once tweaked. Thanks Jarrod 😁
That camera positioning on the Lenovo is just mind boggling. I never thought that would be the thing that tips me over when comparing laptops, but here I am. (Typing this during the COVID crisis; camera and good video conferencing just got more important)
@@saadhussain9785 sure. I saw on your profile that you were asking about thermals. My CPU also used to go over 90c on some more demanding games. But I undervolted the CPU using throttlestop, and when playing high demanding games it usually goes to around 80-85 max. You can buy a cooling pad to lower it even more. New thermal paste is also an option, although I never changed it (maybe I should because I had this laptop for over 3 years now). Also know that these laptops and their CPUs are built to work to 100c without much problems, but I guess for longevity of the device it is better to make these small adjustments. Anyway, I never had problems with this laptop, used it a lot, got my money’s worth and some more. Just take care of it, clean the fans once a year and you should be good. 👍
@@alanhadrovic8132 hey thank you so much for replaying back, today i ama ahppy man, i repasted my laptop and the resukts are pretty good, temps drop of 15-20 degrees.... what are your temps? i have been gaming heavily for about 2 years now and mine is the 9th gen pro which is said to run hot..... if your temps fluctuate constantly around 90-95 then i suggest you should repaste it or else let it be.. dont fix whats not broken i guess... i did undervolt it yesterday to about-135, my laptop crashed hard when it was on battery.. the blue scareen of death came uo so when i restarted i changed it to 100... now wuth the repaste and maybe also the undervolt(i doubt that because i played games after undervolting yesterday and the temps were the same in the higher 90 so its the repaste for me)_
To be honest there are already such great guides out there there's just not that much point in me covering it too when I can link to them 😎 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yNt9L3BWOFo.html I just have too many new machines at the moment so have to focus on getting reviews done.
Watching your previous Helios 300 video I finally decided to buy it ,and I’m having so much fun with it. Been playing mostly Gears 4 and Overwatch. 👍🏽👍🏽
roslolian11 The helious 300 is my first gaming laptop and the noise isn’t too loud for me with my headsets it’s actually good even without my headsets if you don’t care that much .
@@nomad7032 Haven't had time to do serious gaming testing yet. With ~moderate workload of video streaming + watching youtube + working on a huge file in PS it's completely silent and the center of the keyboard is barely warm. During 30m of Overwatch on max settings it did get kinda hot, but i haven't done Undervolting yet, Jarrod's vids and lenovo reddit suggest that it helps quite a lot.
@@vadstart what about the air flow does its majority comes from downward? this means it really needs a cooling pad right? i mean it cant be put on a table or something to let the air flow
I was looking for a new gamer laptop (now that i can afford it) but i was never good with these hardware things... I was asking some of my nerdier friends and they all told me buy the Legion WIFI40 but if i want the aestethics buy the Helios... I ordered the Legion WIFI40 but even that i found this video after i made my choice, i am still happy i choosed that one (im a grqphic designer student and im obsessed with minimalism) Thank you Mr. for the indepth comparission
hi Katalin, yeah & I believe you made a good choice there along with your friends advices since watching Jarrod videos around the past month on the Legion Y540 reviews convinced me purchasing that laptop. So far I haven't experienced any issues with the device where I recommend it to anyone else out there too 👍
Yet another perfect comparison! For those who are reading the comments before watching, this video will be the only comparison video that you'll need to watch.
I'd pick the Lenovo since its easier to tweak, quieter, looks cleaner, ports on the back, and most importantly, a mux switch. I'm glad both these laptops exist though quite frankly. Prices for 2070/2080 max Q's seem way too much $ for what you get. Both these being around will just make other laptops come down in $ if a lot people buy these. Win win for everyone. Both are SO much better than budget gaming laptops from a few years ago. No more thick bezels, horrible 60hz screens, TN panels, weaker CPUs, etc. Good time to be a mobile gamer on a budget! Great comparison Jarrod 👍
The 2070 is not even that significantly better than the 2060 which makes a 2060 an amazing deal. Unfortunately the triton 500 in canada is outrageously expensive with a 2060. I bought a y540 for like 500$ canadian cheaper with the 2060 and 512 gig ssd
@@jed23ify Might be worth it for someone who transfers a lot of data but I don't think not having it is a big deal. E gpus are still really expensive/not amazing performance for the $.
Yeah i was seriously considering the y740 because on top of tb3 it has gsync but the biggest drawback is the absolute terrible keyboard layout. Having a good keyboard was really important since i plan on using it for work and taking notes in lectures. Y740 keyboard is pushed to the right because they created shortcut keys on the left right next to the escape key. Its a really bad design, so i just didn’t think it was worth the extra $$ since the y540 is almost identical with a better keyboard. I can live without tb3 and gsync, its not a deal breaker
Before I watched this video I thought the Helios 300 was better , but now after watching it I feel the y540 is better (for me at least) , Gotta get that one :D By far the best laptops reviews and comparisons on youtube , really good work keep it up !
Got the Helios 300 for 1k on prime day and spent the rest of the 200 bucks on 2 tb sshd, a Logitech hero (wired), a dragon mechanical keyboard and some random Corsair headset. Really happy with the Helios 300 personally. Can be a bit loud at times but you can't hear it with a headset on.
Seriously, I was glad he said that you could turn it off, because otherwise I'd never recommend it to somebody. If you like gamer esthetic that's one thing, but that loud noise on boot is just plain obnoxious.
@@JarrodsTech My aunt is going to America tomorrow. I'll give him money to buy helios300 and sabrent1tb ssd. The reason is that the helios 300 is better out of the box. Amazon cargo to be delivered to your home in 2 days. Lenovo shipping time is longer than I have seen in the forums. My aunt will only stay for 10 days. I hope there will be no problem with the incoming product. Thanks for the review man I really like your videos keep your great work 👍
Got lenovo y540 and the cooling is excellent. You just lift it up cm or 2 (can be applied to any laptop) and I disabled turbo mode(didnt see much change in performance) Temps: 5h gaming demanding games max:65 celsius!!
@@cristiannecula2520 I dont know about that Maybe in most cpu demanding games biggest decrease you would get is 20fps but even when I turn boost on max temp is like 70 C
Thank you for the great review/comparison. I own the Lenovo Y540 with the RTX 2060 GPU. - 17 inch 144 hz screen. I was a bit bummed that the Lenovo didn’t come undervolted out of the box. But I’ve enjoyed learning how to undervolt and overclock over the past couple weeks. By simply switching to balanced mode, lifting the rear of my laptop about 3/4 of an inch for better ventilation and airflow, and undervolting 125 core and cache, I reduced the temperature by more than 10° on average, and the system absolutely flies. All while keeping the fan noise to a minimum. Glad I went this route. I’m really impressed with the performance, screen brightness, lack of light bleed, and just about everything the Y540 offers. Keyboard is good, camera placement horrible. Besides that - I give it a 9.5 out of 10.
Nice, thanks for sharing your experience with it! It's always good to hear what others think, as I'm just one person, the community can help other people deciding what to get as a collective more than me and my single sample size of one I think!
I just picked up the Lenovo Y540 17 inch from microcenter. It has an i7-9750H, RTX 2060, 512 NVME SSD, and a 144Hz screen. I got it for 1,200 bucks at Micro Center here in the USA (Northern Virginia) I overclocked the GPU by +200MHz (Core Clock) & +1000MHz (Memory Clock). I undervolted the CPU by -0.140mv using Intel XTU. I am getting 6,500 Time Spy score (6,600) graphics score. Thermals are great! Never above 90 Celsius, but once fans kick in... it never goes above 83 degrees Celsius. It’s a great laptop
I ordered a Y540 today, cheaper than the Helios in Canada especially with the recent sale, plus I also get 10% cash back with Ebates. Helios has way to many cons for me. The performance advantage due to undervolt and gpu overclock can be done easily on other laptops with Throttlestop/XTU and Afterburner. Many people don't realize the "factory" undervolting is done with software too (with XTU profiles running in Predator Sense) and not set in the BIOS. 1) I/O ports are ALL located on the sides (why? just why?) 2) Power port is in a poor location, cable blocks vent and gets it super hot from the exhaust 3) Immature gamer look, not professional looking, I can't take it to business meetings 4) No MUX switch - not able to disable Hybrid mode 5) Louder fans compared to others 6) Blue trim looks tacky 7) Blue keyboard backlight not good for night time use, white is easier on the eyes 8) Different colored WASD and arrow keys bug me 9) No option to create a "custom" configuration like Lenovo Webcam placement on the Y540 doesn't bother me. I'd actually prefer if they get rid of it completely like the Asus Strix Scar. I've never used a webcam in over 20 years, never going to.
I got one and its cooling is amazing. The trick is to not use cooling pad but: LIFT IT UP A cm or 2 (and I disabled turbo boost because it has no effect on games I play) and max temp during heavy gaming 5 hours is 65celsius!!
Bought the helios 300 and I'm really satisfied with it. People complain about backlight bleed but I've never noticed it especially considering I play videogames in complete darkness.
I think the biggest takeaway in this video for some viewers is that with similar spec, y540 is significantly cheaper than Helios 300 depending on regions. And by regions, I mean a lot of regions and the price difference is significant enough for you to include a lot of side upgrades and still be cheaper than Helios 300.
@@ij6708 For South East Asia region. The price difference starts from USD $721 onwards depending on the gpu and screen that you pick. Take for example, the two laptops with the same spec as the video, the price difference for y540 would be around USD $600 with other non-hardware upgrades included during promotion. I went back to check the price for y540 and it rose a bit and now, with the same price as I paid and promotion, one couldn't get the non-hardware upgrade anymore. So for your region, it will be a comparison between the slight add-on you can get. Also, you are in better position to buy Helios 300 there.
憂鬱Averchenkoff lol, how? Its pretty much worse in everything. The only thing I like on the legion is the keyboard layout. But everything else seems worse
@@kamata93 LOL. Because legion has better design, similar perfomance, good keyboard, 16 gb and 512gb ssd m.2 nvme and it costs $1250 in my country. Helios very loud in turbo mod, has 8gb memory 256gb ssd and it costs $1700😂😂
@@yab3146 I discussed speakers briefly in the video, unfortunately I can't directly compare as I didn't have them together. Based on my recordings I took from both, I think the Y540 sound better, less tinny.
@@TabalugaDragon Tweaks may not be possible for everyone! you are right. And that is why he shows the results without tweaks as well. For those who can tweak it, knowing results with tweaks is very helpful. The laptop being tested in the video you are referring is already tweaked in a lot of ways by HIDEvolution. Thx a lot for making this video, I was having trouble comparing both of the laptops. And this video helped me decide what I should buy as my first laptop :D
These are both on sale today. Will be my first gaming laptop ever! Amazon around $900 and Lenovo website around $900 is starting at 4. Best Buy has them both but the specs are of course different.
I could have ordered Helios 300 but I didn't need those specs as I'm not a hardcore gamer or user. I'm more of a casual user and i don't want the 1080p ultra preset in all games since I don't play alot.
Was planning on buying the Helios 300 but I did not like the positioning of the IOs and the design is really not my taste. Now that I saw you undervolt the Y540, it's 💯% that I will be buying the Lenovo. The simple but elegant design is awesome! and IOs located at the back for a cleaner look nailed it. As always, thanks for the amazing review bruh!😎
