Kol RInah, the Jewish Chorale of Westchester, sing Achar Nogenim, a traditional Sephardic melody by Benedetto Marcello, arranged by Joshua Jacobson. Our conductor is Benjamin Gruder. Kai Hirayama plays the piccolo, and Janet Montroy plays the drum. Recorded live on December 17, 2023 at Congregation Sons of Israel, Briarcliff Manor, NY.
Lyrics and translation:
Akhar nogenim ashira shira
Al ya'lat khen gam a'ira.
Shakhar lamnatseakh omera,
Kum dodi, hanevel ura.
Ma yafifit ben hayafot,
Betokh alamot tofefot.
Enayikh kayonim, yonim tsofot,
Kum dodi, hanevel ura.
Hastav avar, geshem avar,
Hanitsanim niru vahar.
Hine dodekh khamak avar,
Kum dodi, hanevel ura.
Following the musicians,
I sing my song.
I rouse the dawn,
Uttering my morning psalm.
Come my beloved, sound the harp.
You are the most beautiful
Of all the maidens
Playing the drums.
Your eyes are like doves,
Come my beloved, sound the harp.
The winter is past, the rains are over.
Blossoms are seen on the hillsides.
Behold, your lover has turned and gone.
Come by beloved, sound the harp.
