That’s exactly how I do it. I must admit I’ve never centered mine, I put it where it’s most convenient. I spray with water as I roll to remove any wrinkles. I tear the ends to get straight of grain if I’m loading to get ends straight.

Misting the backings as I roll them on has been a MAJOR time saver for me!

This is exactly how I load my backings! Doing a small one as I watch your video! When I hep beginners at a local shop they are always shocked that I don’t mark the centers of my backing or top.

Are you attaching on the front?

Sometimes I have a backing that is directional and a quilt that would most easily be quilted side to side -- I usually start with a torn edge on the top or bottom -- do you have any thoughts about that. I do strictly custom quilting.
@StitchedBySusan

Torn edge is fine, it just takes a little care to make sure it doesn’t stretch while attaching.

when you roll up the backing on the front bar, are your ratchets engaged, or are you free-wheeling

Missed your live, but I'm wondering about your longarm, I thought you used a Gammill? When and why did you change?

Just a few months ago. I have a 4 min episode called "Why I Changed Longarm Brands" which details a few of the reasons. Nothing earth-shattering, but it was right for me.

Hi susan im lucy from oakley calif. im new to quilting .I just bought a long arm quilting machine anyway before i bought my machine i already basted my backing and batting and top together ,can I somehow load my quilt onto my poles. I didnt leave any fabric on the ends to attach to my leaders. yikes can you help
@StitchedBySusan
@StitchedBySusan 9 месяцев назад
I answered your other comment. I suggest taking the basting out, and it may be difficult to load on the longarm and keep from having any wrinkles, but each quilt is a little different.

Is that yardsticks on the front of the table?

Yes! I used them to hold up the side clamps when they want to sag a bit.

I don’t think there’s a “best”. But I do prefer 100% poly because it is very low lint, and handles high speed stitching well.

Hard to keep with 1/4 in square when the client quilt is 2 inches narrower in the middle than at the ends….yes, that has happened…😵‍💫
