Excellent video. Thanks for the info. I'm going to get onto these myself and get myself back to full fitness.

These videos are wonderful Evans. I have a recent 50 % tear and we've started the non-surgical path but that so far has only meant giving me a boot without a lot of instructions and then waiting for four weeks until I can start physical therapy. I feel a little left on my own and your videos are just perfect for me. They're so practical and down to earth yet their medical and sports excellence is also obvious. Thanks so much.

How did it happen? And how did you know it was a 50%tear? How is it now?

12 weeks, non operative Achilles complete rupture. Everything went smoothly, early weight bearing. After three months, I feel like this injury is behind me.

@@EddyG0rdo take heart. I ruptured mine on 20th January. After three months, it will feel like the injury is behind you. However, there will still be work to be done. After three weeks when you are out of the hard cast (2 weeks), walking boot (about two months), able to shower without bagging the walking boot, able to sleep without the boot, able to wear normal shoes with an ankle brace, just the ability to be more mobile will make you feel like a new person. However, you must stick to the protocol.

Hi all, hope you are all having a great festive period. I'm at week 5 and 2 days since the rupture.I've been keeping up with exercises that I was giving by my physiotherapist and if I can give any advice it would be to keep up with the exercise even if your busy etc you must take time out. The problem we face is how quickly muscle atrophy can occur and it's most important to strengthen the calf muscle and overall leg.

hi Evan ruptured my tendon a week ago.. positive Thompson test and ultrasound show tendon but blood clot covers the tear so inconclusive. in a splint 20-30 plantar at the moment non weight bearing.. not sure which route to go surgery or non surgery but I'm still able to flex and extend my foot and contract calf muscle with a positive Thompson test so I believe it's partially torn.. one doctor recommended non surgery the other recommends surgery because of my lifestyle and heavy duty weight training lifestyle. I'm sure I could rehab this but don't wanna suffer rerupture as I tore my other Achilles 12yrs ago 5 months none weight bearing

+cohenfitness Sorry I missed this when you posted it. I have been out of town for a few weeks and not checking in. I hope that you were able to make a good, informed decision about your path for this new injury. Very sorry to hear that you are a veteran starting round 2! Whether you choose surgery or non-op, I can definitely endorse the Early Weight Bearing protocol. The data show that it benefits healing and leads to improved results (functional range of motion, strength, etc) than the lengthy NWB you went through last time. That, and quality of life is massively better during those early months. I am at 14 weeks now, and though I still have a slight limp while I work on calf strength... I'm otherwise living a normal life (sans running... so almost normal). Good luck!

+Edgar Espina :Thanks for the advice. Are-rupture has been my big concern all along, and I backed off a few times when it seemed my Therapist was asking too much of the AT... trying to push myself without hurting myself. My rupture site now has a thickened section of tendon, and my Ortho told me that it will probably always be a bit thicker than its counterpart on the other leg. I'm telling myself it will be like a weld... stronger than the surrounding material. ;-) How far are you post-injury and re-injury, and have you been able to return to "normal" activities? I just recently started going to the gym again, and am thrilled to do so. The gym rats probably wonder why my leg is straining so hard against so little weight... but I don't care. It feels great just to exercise that way again. Good luck!

+Edgar Espina Hi Edgar/Evan I like you reinjured my AT at 16 weeks post injury and was also pushed too hard by my physio, wish I had backed off too. Iam doing exactly the same and following the original protocol of non-op treatment. I have had an ultrasound scan at 4 weeks post re-injury which reported a minimal connection, this was worrying but Im not sure if this is a normal thing to see at this stage of the injury. Has anyone here had a scan at 16-20 weeks stage ?, My physio also thinks the retear could be scar tissue but the scan result has got ne worried. I have been watching Evans great videos and find them very helpful, thanks again Evan

+Edgar Espina, Hi Edgar, I feel a slight indent but still feels like tendon is joined. Did the tear in the scar tissue give you a bruise and pain when walking..mine did

+Edgar Espina ..Sorry for multiple posts Edgar Saw another physio today who said Thompson test was very weak and now wants to refer me back to the consultant for approval before doing any physio. This is so frustrating as a private physio iI saw last week said I can start to walk without the boot and he would treat me now. How strong was the movement in your thompson test ?, I'm thinking of continuing as if I am 4 weeks post injury ..I just dont want the op. We can continue this discussion without clogging up Evans posts my email address is koal54@gmail then maybe report back for people to learn form our experience?

Hi Evan brown please help .my right Achilles rupture non surgical cast 8 weeks and 1 week wear cam booth 2 weeks wear shoes with wedge 10 mil and Physio .. but my foot swelling , I finger press foot skin it dent long time skin .hold beneath under foot red .. pain full . I walk and stand 1 hours I have rest 15 minutes sit down . Dr give pain killer . How your foot 11 weeks pain ? Are you ice ? Eplastic compress ? Thank you
@ejbvmi
@ejbvmi 6 лет назад
long mai Some swelling following activities is probably normal, especially since your foot only emerged from a cast three weeks ago. Walking will have some discomfort for awhile while the bones and tendons work their way back to where they were before the injury. Walking on it is important, but so is listening to your body and not over-doing it. Rest as needed to let your leg and foot recover. Best of luck, and be patient!

at what week did you stop feeling the pain every time you walked behind your heel. I'm on my second week and I'm already walking on it but I have a huge limp when I walk and it hurts if I try to walk properly. I don't think I torn my achillies, I might of just sprained it or partial tear perhaps. but my calf is starting to get some form but I cannot do lift heels yet. I think my injury is too soon for me to do that. but I can walk little by little with a little pain. the pain is more like a tender feeling or a stretching pull behind my heel than anything.
