Zum besseren Verständnis wage ich hiermit noch die Ergänzung, daß die drittletzte Verszeile ʺDer Steuermann hatte Matrosen am Mastʺ sicherlich bedeutet, daß der Steuermann Syphilisgeschwüre am Penis hatte - wohl, weil er sich bei einer der einheimischen Frauen damit angesteckt hatte. For a better understanding I dare to add that the third last line of verse ʺThe helmsman had sailors on the mastʺ certainly means that the helmsman had syphilis ulcers on his penis - probably because he had contracted it from one of the local women. 😉

Because it is…people misinterpret the song's name to "don't give up", well…it's kind of correct in a way. The lyrics is essentially The story of some homo sailor's messed up life in a colonized slave trading center Island, having goofball sex with the ship crew while watching ships and ships of slaves being sailed away...
