The Oetz river is currently Tyrol's longest free flowing river. With sections from class 1 to 5 the river has become legendary amongst kayakers of all abilities. However, an ongoing dam project in the valley will soon change the river and how we know it for ever.
With ever more dam projects planned for the valley over the next several years, it is more important than ever that we work together to stop them. The best way to do this currently is to follow one of the organizations fighting against the dam to keep up to date with the next series of campaigns against this dam project and further dam projects in the future.

Wow. Precious little margin for error on some of those rapids. Top marks for making it through unscathed. The Oetz is a phenomenal river in exquisite scenery. Let's all do what we can to save it.

Damming for hydro plants today, just isn't worth the long term environmental impact. It's a short sighted approach. Your boat control is second to none .

I disagree, hydro dams can be done fine the Ottawa river has lots of massive ones and is full of life. But agricultural damming ran amuck and loose 19th century standards left us with many river killing dams. Hydro is the most reliable zero emissions out there.

Why is it that some see it to be necessary to dam every free flowing river in the world? It always ends up being a short sighted solution which almost never delivers on what it is supposed to deliver, and always destroys an awesome stretch of river and all that surrounds it.

Grading is so subjective mate. I would call the Achsturze chossy class 5 with some serious consequences to blowing a line.

@@Dexs59 Well, class 6 is not really used. Except for german DKV guidebooks from the 80s. If a section or rapid technically qualifies as class 6 people would refer to it as "really hard" or "stout". But be aware who you are talking to. If you talk to a class 4 paddler these exact same words could be used for a class 4+ river.

What is the class rating system these days? When I was boating back in the day, we had a class 1.0 - 7.0 system, with 7.0 being unrunnable. Class was a windless day on an indoor swimming pool. 1.1 was an outdoor pool with a mild breeze disturbing the surface ever so slightly. Class 2 means the water is moving, but even really drunk and without knowing how to swim you will still be able to get to shore. class 6.999 meant most people die, but one person made it out alive. Probably with divine intervention. Or maybe the only person who made it out alive WAS God.

From my understanding Class (what I call grade) 6 is un-runable (almost certain death), grade 5 being serious injury if you swim, and you have to get out and scout, and even then not all of the line is visible. Grade 4 being quite bad injuries, but all of the line visible from a scout, and a few must make moves. Grade 3 is then don't need to scout, but it is advised, and there are several lines you can take. Grade 2 is a couple of rocks/waves, and grade 1 is flat, maybe moving. But these grades can change with water level, and also have some personal leeway, as what I might call grade 4 might be someone's else grade 3, depending on their skill and confidence

@@jamesmccann531 Thanks for the reply. It does seem as if the system has changed. In my day the class rating could change depending on the water flow, but it there was no allowance made for the individual's skill level. You pretty much had to know whether you were able to run a river of any given class (or grade). Class 3 was class 3 whether you were an Olympic paddler or were in a boat for the first time.

@@Chompchompyerded what a guide book says, and what the more experianced paddlers say is pretty much a single thing, and the personal thing is only because one person might be more scared.
