CALIBRATED CUPS
1 Calibrated Cup = 1 Percent Air
A calibrated cup is used when the water level falls below the neck on the air meter while running the test. If this happens, either the concrete contains a significant amount of air, or your apparatus has leaked during the test.
Add calibrated cups of water to bring the water level up into the neck so its level can be measured. Record the number of cups added, and add to the final air content at the end. Example: 9% air reading + 2 calibrated cups added during the test = Final reading of 11% air entrainment.
Air Entrainment: Air has been intentionally added to the mix (typically readings above 3%)
Air Entrapment: Naturally occurring air in the concrete mix (typically from 1 to 3%)

I'm going for my ACI test next week.... I know we have to do this test, but do not use this method at our shop..... nervous as HELL! I'll be saving this and watching it over and over! lol THANK YOU!

I teach the ACI field course in Dallas. The standard says to examine for "undisturbed concrete." We say that if the concrete looks like the concrete in the wheelbarrow, the test is invalid. If it's washed rock and sand, the test is valid.

I'm taking the test in April and I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your videos. I'm sure they will be very helpful! I have a question though. In our lab, the instructor mentioned that sometimes you have to use a tiny cup to add water if the reading after settling is lower than the lowest mark on the air-reading scale. Can you please elaborate on that?

That was a little sand that settled there right at the end, so I would say it was a valid test. But yes, if it were aggregate-sand-cement caked in the bottom, it would have been invalid because that means not all of the sample was dislodged during the test.

According to ASTM c173 7.4.2 the way he turned the base a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn before rolling again is not correct. You should be rolling a 1/4 to1/2 turn,then rotate the base only 1/3 of a turn and again do your rolling motion 1/4 to 1/2 turns.

@ Kenneth - You're correct Ken. If you follow the on-screen prompts, you won't be led astray. I believe he simply misspoke as he was explaining the procedure at that particular point during the demonstration. I was there during the filming. Thanks for the heads up!
