★About Professor Herp★
I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

I have a bearded dragon, leopard geko and acrested geko. And i really want to get an ackie. I do research for at least 6 months and i need to get the money for all the necesary things. In my contry they are very hard to get and expensive in our money because almost nobody keeps reptiles.

Love this. I def feel a personal connection with my chonky beardie, he goes bright orange when I pick him up (not black!) lol he’s a spikey cuddlebum but I’d love to experience something like your ackeys! So funny! My beardie will stop eating his salad if he notices you watching! At least that’s what it seems like!

Please don’t judge me but I have had beards and iguanas before but for some reason they didn’t live long I did get them from a pet store I have them in a huge aquarium 50 gallon tank had substrate had water dish had climbing stuff for them the ultra light and basking light on one side like I’m supposed to any feed them crickets and meal worms and gave them the appropriate greens with the powder stuff so I don’t know what I did for them to die so I kinda gave up on lizards but I really want to try again so maybe you can tell me what happened or what I did wrong ?
@Sometallguy
@Sometallguy 4 года назад
I’d say that you should start a beardie in a smaller enclosure when it’s young so you can make sure that it’s eating and drinking. Also, your basking spot could have been too hot or too cold and your ambient temps could have also been incorrect. Another problem could be feeding too many mealworms to a young beardie. Mealworms are mostly exoskeleton, which is hard to digest. The last few things that could have been issues are the type of vegetables you fed, how often you fed the beardie, and if you were either giving too much or not enough calcium/ multivitamin

I’m speaking for bearded dragons as I have no experience with iguanas. First of all I disagree with getting a smaller enclosure, get an appropriate size a 4x2x2, or more if you have the space. If it’s too big at first just block half out with something. I personally have a 6x2x2 enclosure as that’s a bit above the legal bare minimum where I live. Buying something small is pointless because beardies grow SO quick. You’ll need to buy a new tank in just a few months. I do agree with the other points the previous person made though. A few things that come to mind is did you get them as babies from the pet store? They often sell them way too young. A baby beardie should be sold at between 3-4 months old. They should be eating 1-3 a day up until they are around 12 months. The insects should also be an appropriate size, no bigger than the space between their eyes. When you get a new pet you should also take them to a vet to make sure they’re not carrying any diseases/parasites. You said you have UVB? Is it a tube UVB? It should be linear tube UVB light with around 12-14% UVB. Could it have been a female that was egg bound? Stress? It’s honestly just a guess as its hard to tell exactly what the issue is without knowing the details of your whole set up. I wish you good luck either way 😊

Plus keep Beardies in a dry habitat. Humidity needs to be low, 30 to 40%. Helps prevent lung diseases.

Hey! New to the channel, loving the informative videos like these. Very helpful! I’ve got a couple questions if you don’t mind! How difficult is it to cohab ackies? Did you start out with two? Any tips for cohabbing successfully?
@ProfessorHerp
@ProfessorHerp 3 года назад
I did start with two but don't recommend it. You need to learn about their behavior before getting two and cohabbing. Cohabbing should probably only be done if intending to breed. Always have a standby enclosure (proper setup) incase they need to be separated! Only ever introduce the male to females enclosure (males more territorial).
@nonyabusiness2510

@@ProfessorHerp Not sure if you keep up with the older posts but this was a question I had as well. I am planning on a large enclosure 8 feet wide, 4 high and 3 deep. I have a breeder I am looking to buy from and she has two from the same clutch left and I thought if they have been together in the same enclosure I would purchase them together. If they end up both being male I would look to sell one of them as I'm sure it would end up being a problem but I thought I would have at least a shot at getting either two females or a male and female. I'm not sure about breeding them but I would be open to it and if I did get a male and female I would accommodate that. Really respect your opinion on this. Not new to monitors as I have a emerald tree monitor but he's more of a hands off animal although he will sometimes jump on my arm. These were also born in August and are going on 4 months so I'm assuming that the age is still a good age to acquire one. Any feedback would be appreciated. I guess I'm just looking at what would be the best for the animal. Do they appreciate having company in your opinion.
@ProfessorHerp
@ProfessorHerp 2 года назад
@@nonyabusiness2510 They do not enjoy company. You, the keeper, may enjoy some additional behaviors they exhibit when being with another of their kind, but they are much more comfortable alone. I would only cohab if breeding and even then you need to separate every now and then. Additionally, they can get pretty riled up during puberty and always have the potential to kill the other. Feeding is also sometimes sketchy if you are not experience with cohabbing them.
@nonyabusiness2510
@nonyabusiness2510 2 года назад
@@ProfessorHerp Thank you, that essentially makes my decision. They are a new species to me in spite of having a different type of monitor and if there is no gain for the animal then I don't need the extra work involved in cohabitating them. Really excited to get one. Really enjoying all your videos and I appreciate your efforts to improve the husbandry. It's no doubt a great undertaking staying on top of all of this.

Grapes are not smart. grapes do not have any intelligence. I understand what you are saying. you could say. something like. a bearded dragon is not the sharpest tool in the toolbox. Meaning. as he is not very smart. You could say that man is very intelligent when he comes up on a problem he knows what to do immediately. ( he is as sharp as a thumbtack.) Well anyway thank you for having this on RU-vid. I'm getting my ackee monitor Friday. I hope the little ackee monitor that I get will be very intelligent. smart as a shovel handle. He he he lol. I'm just getting started on the monitors. Do you think or do you know anything about putting a harness on ackee monitor. I'm thinking started pretty young but the harness on the little ackee release her back into the enclosure. For maybe one or two hours. I think this would help get her used to wearing a harness. you do work horses like that it gets them used to the harness. even though you are not working them. It gets them used to wearing the harness and filling the difference on their back. But anyway THANK YOU Donnie Dixon Galax. Va

An akie has stong jaws serrated teeth , a decongestant in its bite which will make it bleed for ages and a very nasty type of bacteria similar to Komodo’s but not anywhere near as bad.

I’ve heard a conflicting opinion that ackie’s are not good for first time owners no matter how prepared and educated you are. I really want one and have already started working out how things would work. I’m dedicated to owning reptiles but my confidence is sometimes smacked down by those that say it’s not a good beginner pet

As someone who has owned 3 beardies, the saying that they're "overrated" or "boring" is something that I highly disagree with and is painfully untrue. It's down to which lizard you personally would like to own more, neither lizard species are either of those two. Just thought i'd type this out because I really dislike the whole "meta" thing coming up recently about which lizard is "cooler" to own

@@thatoneannoyingtornadosire8755 I do like beardies, but I personally think I am more of a blue tongue skink or ackie person :p I only own a ball python and my one problem is that they don't do much (or when they do it's at night so I'm not going to see) Don't beardies sit around all the time? Atleast all the ones I've seen do. I'm sure when they're out of their enclosure that's a different story
