The second whistle was originally a “Cyclists Road Clearer” designed in Victorian times and still made today.

Just a small point but the Navy Boatswain whistle is actually correctly referred to as a Boatswain’s Call. Yes it is pronounced Bosun .....

I just got a Metropolitan today, to keep on the keychain just because. It's so well made! Made in England, too, not place-which-shall-not-be-named. After hearing your vid I'm for-sure getting the botwain's pipe and the siren. (I had a made-in-place-which-shall-not-be-named boatswain's pipe and it did precisely nothing. THat was in early 80's. Time to get a real one ;o) The Metropolitan isn't quite as loud as a Thunderer, just so y'all know. The best I could do was 100.8db c-weighted in my home theater. It's a polite whistle but sounds identical to what I heard in England when I was stationed there. SO glad Acme's still around!

Bo's'un whistle is what is being referenced in the Shanty "Blow the man down".. the Bo's'on has specific calls he sounds to men aloft and on deck when sail is tended. 1st mate calls the orders, Bo's'on relays details, as needed, with calls off the pipe. Blowing a man down references summoning a sailor "to do".

I got a metropolitan police whistle today for my birthday and I love it! ( but I bet my brother will regret giving it to me. ^_^ so loud. so english.)

Question. Let's say you have a device that can blow one steady stream of air indefinitely.... it's either on or off. Will the siren whistle sound natural with a 2-second burst of wind? Will the pitch rise and fall in a nice fashion? I'm considering hooking a rubber tube to it and connecting it to a hole in a pipe organ (after taking out the pipe). Make sense?
