Five years later, I think back to this video as the one that changed the game for me. Your perspective and method not only changed my own foundation routine but it helped improve my confidence and self-esteem which did not involve having to HIDE behind makeup. I rewatch this video every now and then, especially when I'm having a bad "skin season" --- just to remind myself what to do and not to do. You are the voice of reason inside my head. Thank you!

I like how she said that in the areas where we don't have spots are actually perfect, so that we should try to show off those parts. I would've just smeared foundation all over my face!

This is how acne coverage foundation routines should be done; it's so natural looking and imperceptible on the model's face. Too many beauty gurus (even those without acne) suggest heavy coverage all over, and it ends up looking like a caked on mask. Well done, Lisa!

Wow this tutorial makes me feel like such a dummie! When I get spots because of my period I slather my face with BB cream or foundation like I'm trying to paint a wall. It also happens if I'm going to an important event. And I always treat my face rather harshly when using sponges or brushes lol, it's like a have a war with my face when using makeup; Lisa Eldridge treats skin with such delicate touch in all of her tutorials I feel ashamed of myself haha

Not sure why I'm crying but the way you view blemished skin and how you like putting makeup on it is truly life-changing. I find it really hard on my part to always do a heavy coverage routine esp since I go to class every day. I suffer from countless criticisms because my blemishes still show even w/ makeup but I find the staring even more hurtful. So glad I found this video, I really learned a lot and understood my skin even better. Thank you for being an inspiration to many!

I always get compliments on how high my cheekbones are, or how my skin always looks like it's glowing and dewy, even with all my acne and scarring. And I sometimes forget they're there at all. So, to hear Lisa say that not all of the skin is bad, and people won't notice the bad if you bring out the good makes me feel 10 times better.

Its so refreshing to hear a professional makeup artist talk about NOT blanketing the skin in foundation and powder. I am very much into natural looking skin and every time I tried to do the "works" I felt I looked fake. This video has pretty much been my makeup philosophy for a very long time and I'm happy to hear others share my views on the skin!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us💄💌

Thank so much for this video! I'm 21, I have acne and sometimes I really hate my skin. I literally torture it with different treatment products, I put so much make up on it every day...Today, after watching your video, I saw a different skin in the mirror: young, with a natural glow, so beautiful...I usually concentrate on blemishes and now I see how wrong it is. Thank you so much, your makeup philosophy really helped me, it helped me even more than the part of the video with the makeup itself!

A decade after you made this video, I am using this technique. I had forgotten about it, and recently got a bad adult acne breakout. Yesterday I looked awful piling thick concealer over the whole bottom half of my face. Today, my skin looks so much more flawless by using this minimalistic technique. Thank you so much for this video!

You have to go the dermatologist. The over the counter products, many are waste of money. If you get prescribed contraceptives, it helps to control it. When you stop, it comes back with a vengeance. This is only from what I have experienced personally.

It's been years since you made this video, Lisa, and I'm so grateful because you released it when I was in my late teens dealing with acne. Now I'm in my mid twenties however, and I'm dealing with the scarring. My scars are not just red and on the surface, but they're more of the 'pitted' scars that, no matter how much concealing I do, light betrays me and shows the texture of my skin. Mine aren't quite severe, but they're visible enough that I'm self-conscious. I'm waiting for the day when you make a video for us girls dealing with scars! Thank you, xx.

Moica Silva I would really advise that you stay with brands like La Roche-Posay if you have skin that easily breaks out. My skin has improved dramatically since changing my make-up and skincare to skin-friendly brands like this. Even some of the higher end ones like YSL have alcohol in and irritate my skin no end. It's worth the money - you can't put a price on a good complexion.

It's a shame that all my spots are on my cheeks, the area that you like to keep as natural as possible. And it's not always spots, but my skin is just always red in that area. I just don't wear foundation or any other make-up. It takes too much time and when I do it I feel that it is so obvious that I'm wearing make-up because I'm not good enough at applying it. Also I worry about how it looks every second of the day and I don't think that's worth it. I just go outside without make-up and people will have to accept me as I am, if they can't do that, that's their problem, not mine... That may sound rude, but that's not how I meant it :)

This such a wonderful approach towards covering acne! It is so easy to forget about your face as a whole and just see your skin as a canvas for spots. Recently I started only using foundation where I have redness or scarring and it has made such a difference! You are so right though Lisa, it takes twice as long to do but this method is worth it! It feels really rewarding to use less foundation when you have acne. Using it all over my face made made me feel as though I had more to hide which was quite unhelpful.

Using Lisa's gentle techniques (like feathering the product), try the drugstore buys below: Primer: Rimmel 2-in-1 Fix & Perfect Foundation: L'Oreal Tru Match Liquid Foundation (mix it with a bit of moisturizer on the back of your hand and apply with either a brush, sponge, or fingers). Under Eye Concealer: Maybelline Dream Lumi Highlighting Concealer Setting Powder: Revlon Naked Pressed Powder Foundation

I saw the reference to this video in some blog post and I loved it SO much I instantly adapted this routine! I have unproblematic skin, but this whole trick is amazing way to the true 'natural make up look'. I always liked to use as little make up as possible and I was annoyed by many 'professionals' who consider heavy foundation, powder, bronzer + false lashes with eyeliner natural! Also, everyone who is considering doing this: don't be scared off by the length of the video ... tutorial is long, because she's explaining it along the way and proceeding slowly so we can see clearly what she is doing. This doesn't take more than 5 min for people with skin like Madeline's.

So hypnotised by Lisa's voice that I'm starting to read the commends in her voice in my mind!

What if you have horrible acne scars and big pores. And oily oily sensitive acne prone skin.

invest in a really good full coverage foundation that looks natural. for example: estee lauder double wear. the foundation should cover a good amount of your marks while still looking natural. then go in with the pin point concealing

I'd loooooove her to do my makeup ... I've never used makeup but I could definitely use some

since you havent used makeup, work on eating right and your skincare first! that might help enough to where you then dont need makeup:)

haha definitely, and i'm trying my best, but I say i'd like her to do it for me just to see the results ;) ~ I don't plan on wearing full on make up routinely, for now at least~

This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen not just for acne but also for applying foundation & concealer. I love the philosophy of letting your natural beauty shine through. I’ve always liked using foundation with light coverage. I also love how down to earth she is. Thank you!

It looks beautiful and not caked on. Her skin looks dewy and fresh and not powdery.

I like this. Very pretty. Similar to how I've started doing my own makeup on an everyday basis over the past year. I have combination skin and suffer from hormonal breakouts (and have had severe acne in the past) and I used to just slather on a thick layer of foundation all over. Nowadays, I use CC cream, a little concealer, and translucent powder most days. If my skin's imperfections show through a little bit, it's okay. It doesn't cause me anxiety any more. Nobody is perfect. :-)

Thank you so so much for this tutorial! This vedeo is already 11 years old but definitely the best one I could find on RU-vid. The skin looks so beautiful and how you put on the foundation and the concealer looked so soft. I love it.
