Picked up a Taylor nylon string recently for ease of amplification. Acoustically, it's not a patch on an equivalently priced "classical", but through a decently acoustic amp with a sound dialled in, rather than into an interface is when these things really come alive. A decent set of hard tension strings helps too - minimises the "slap" that you sometimes get

Sorry about the throat Mick, hope you feel better, you sure sound rough... Classical always gives you another guitar option when recording too. They fill in well on a recording if you play them with a pick and use a couple of mics. Pan them far right and left and they work well.

Really curious how they would sound with Carbon strings ... Framus was building arch backed classical guitars in the 1950's. They can also be quite nice :) The location of the bridge in the lower bout has a large influence. 12th fret vs 14th fret join is also very influential ... That Admira A20 certainly holds its own against the more modern creations :)

Did they mention that the Yamaha NTX has a slimmer neck like a steel string would?
@deldia
@deldia 7 лет назад
Nylon strung guitars have had a bit of a resurgence. Rodrigo and Gabriela are an obvious reference. Obviously traditional classical guitar is an art that will always be popular. There's nothing you can't play on nylon that you can play on steel but there's a lot of stuff on nylon you will destroy your fingers if you try on steel.
@sleepymarauder4178

Could you elaborate. I'm seeing this as a challenge.

@sleepymarauder4178

wikichris doing the things you can do at a nylon but supposedly not at a steel string
@deldia
@deldia 7 лет назад
Jelte Derksen rasgueados cannot be done effectively on a steel string guitar. Perhaps with some artificially strengthened nails it could be done. It can be done, but very quickly yours nails will be destroyed within minutes.
@bobdickson1000
@bobdickson1000 7 лет назад
I'm a classical guitarist/fingerstyle guitarist and i indulge in a lot of crossover (if that's the correct word to use in this context). i'm quite aware that my nails are ridiculously and also somewhat abnormally strong - which is why i string my nylon with extra hard tensions and my acoustic with 12s (sometimes 13s) - but there is no reason why you couldn't play classical pieces or styles on a steel string which accommodates that play style. By that i mean a wide nut and somewhat comfortable string spacing. In truth, classical guitar is soooo much more about technique and tone which you as a player express through a guitar. at the end of the day, a nylon string may have a better (wider) expression pallet for that style than a steel - but often i find myself performing with a steel string purely because some pieces require a tone which nylon strings just cant produce! if finger picking a steel string is your problem, go down a gauge set... you'll find it a lot easier.
@alansturgess3475
@alansturgess3475 6 лет назад
Jake Thackray made great inventive use of nylon strung - well worth listening to just for his playing. Cyril Tawney often used one for his folk singing. Again - worth listening to and learning from.

Great show! Not a classical musician, but in south america nylon is much more common, although steel is growing in popularity. You guys should do an episode on resonators (I don't know if it has been done already) and try to get a Del Vecchio (brazilian nylon string resonator) Cheers guys

You saints just can't do no wrong. the instruments seem to sound a little different but that's because they are! and that a great thing wit or without a pick! @daleharrisguitar
@daleharrisguitar 7 лет назад
First, you need to demonstrate with fingerpicking using nails not flesh (you guys need to push the body in order to resonate). Second: projection; one cannot tell what sounds louder as cedar appears louder to the player and spruce sounds softer and yet the reverse is often actually true in terms of out front sound. Back and sides help throw especially the bass sounds out and Indian rosewood is different to mahogany types. Third: strings make a huge difference from nylon to composite types in terms of sustain and tone. Body construction in terms of struts makes a large difference in terms of the timing of the resonance. Moreover, the resonant frequencies of the sound top and how it interacts with the corresponding resonant frequency of the back has a massive impact on wolf notes and feedback issues should you make a bad choice of instrument construction type.

Might be a stupid question. But does anyone use nylon strings on an electric guitar and if so, what would they gain from doing so ?
@styx85
@styx85 7 лет назад
They would gain a very silent electric guitar. Nylon strings are invisible to the magnetic pickups in an electric guitar.
@stuarcari
@stuarcari 7 лет назад
When I was a kid I think my mum would have loved a silent, nylon-stringed electric guitar for me.
@theclinger
@theclinger 7 лет назад
You might be able to get some nylon effect with some kind of hybrid strings, but it would most likely be more effort that it's worth. String tension, magnetic pickup, etc.
@quasarpuffs
@quasarpuffs 7 лет назад
Actually the wound strings would make a sound since they're metal wrapped with a nylon core, but the plain nylon treble strings wouldn't register.
@theclinger
@theclinger 7 лет назад
Entirely depends on if the metal they use in the wound strings is ferromagnetic, although the core wouldn't be so they'd be fairly quiet. I'm sure they are though, so there would probably be some sound.
