If you’re someone interested in acoustics (I’m going to assume you are, otherwise why would you be here..) and you’ve messed around a little with treatment in your room, you’ve probably asked yourself the question at some point:
How far do I need to take all this?
Sure, it’s fun to move your setup and speakers around, put some panels on the wall and see what changes.
But this rabbit hole goes so much deeper.
But when does it end? How much is enough?
When are you finally done with treating your room?
I’ve thought about this a great deal since the question popped up many years ago.
It’s surprisingly hard to answer.
Because pure numbers don’t tell the story.
It’s sort of like asking: When is the mix done?
In the end it all depends on what you set out to achieve in the first place.
And in acoustic terms, that means having an honest look at what we truly want when we treat our rooms.
Here’s what I’ve come up with.

Your videos are amazing Jesco! It would be awesome if you do a video showing how can we treat a square room! I know it's a bad shape, but most of the bedroom producer struggle with this! Thank you so much!

Mix translation is all about getting the mids right. All speakers have mids - even scooped ones. The lows and highs come and go depending on the speaker and the environment. A good mix will withstand transition between places and systems because it doesn't rely on the lows or highs for its fundamental balance. This is the true strength of starting a mix on a cube speaker such as an Auratone or setting an EQ on the monitor buss to cut below 300 Hz and cut above 3 kHz. After getting a good balance just on the faders, switching to full range will clearly show which tracks need their lows or highs fixing with EQ to bring things back into balance.

It's so frustrating to work on a mix for hours, and then it sounds completely different somewhere else

Hello Jesco, love that you help the home studio people understand more about acoustics! I have a question, how should I think about treating a room if I both will mix in it and tracking guitar and vocals in the same room? Do I use less absorbtion or should I treat the room the same? Thank you for your great videos!

Hi, love your video series. I'll be setting up a new room in the near future. Would you mind considering these subjects in your next videos? - room setup/treatment checklist (from bare walls to finished), the process step by step (unless you already have done it) - will a room treated for 2.1 hold up if going up to 5.1? - what's a good analysis software and accompanying mic which won't break the bank (I see you are using REW, which I've been also using) Thanx!

Hey, I’d love to hear your opinion on room correction software like ARC 3 and Sonarworks. Do you think it’s worth it after you’ve done substantial treatment or would messing with the eq of the speaker output cause more harm than good? I’ve personally got a resonance around 150hz and yes it reduces to make it more “flat” but honestly I’m not sure if I like the sound. Both just sound “different” and not necessarily “better” but perhaps the correction would help with translation to other systems... maybe..

I was hoping for a reference point for tiny rooms, 13ft x 10.5ft. E.g. On a scale of too dead, to very reflective using the waterfall graph. Is 250-350ms decent for a tiny room or is too dead?🙄 Usual culprits in a tiny room is the slap back flutter echo, which we try to tame but then killing tends to make the room tonally dead. Your thoughts?

Hey Jesco - thanks for the video! A suggestion: Firmly into the 2nd year of the covid-era, literally all shows from yahoo finance to Antifa online meeting happen between connected living rooms. They ALL sound terrible, mainly due to untreated rooms. Maybe an episode specific for that? Might get some views!

I believe Jesco is saying "...without all the voodoo," which I take to mean "without all the strange, magical, out-of-the-ordinary techniques that some acoustical experts seem to rely on."
