I learned as a child in the Greek Orthodox church, the phronema. I left in the church in the 70’s, as a rebellious teens. I went from one protestant church to another until my 60’s. But the phronema was always with me, I just could not give an explanation, and never felt it in any other church. I’m now committed once again to the Orthodox faith of my youth. So wonderful to be home and at peace. Thank you for this.

Thank You! As a Protestant, this is very revealing of the dissatisfactions I have with my own denominational ‘system’. The disparity between belief and actions, the constant justifications in spite of being justified in Christ, the many many ‘To me…’ statements prior to an individualistic interpretation or view. It is as if Heaven has become a democracy. I was blessed to be born into a Christian home and very much appreciate the gracious end comments made by EC regarding having a good start in the Faith. I will be reading her books. It is 2022 and the Western world has gone bat crazy - and along with it much of the Church. The Orthodox Phronema beckons…

It was great sin that finally brought me to the understanding of Christ’s love through the Orthodox lense! This is HUGE for me … as an ex-Catholic and Protestant, tho I am VERY grateful for the journey … the image of an angry God made me run away every time I fell. Finally my priest lovingly commanded me to come regularly and TAKE communion … “What? Me a sinner??!!” Yes, he said. Now my feet are on a different path because my heart has been loved by my God all through the sacraments! So appreciative for the talk Dr Jeannie! With regard to the "Messianic Christians" I lived a couple decades in Pasadena, very close to the Fuller Seminary, one of the largest Protestant Seminaries in the U.S. For nearly 25 years I would spend my Saturday mornings at a Protestant bookstore which supplied most of the Protestant ministers and seminarians in the area. Aside from seeing and hearing the Protestant biases mostly about Catholics, sometimes although less on the radar Orthodoxy, I also met a couple of founders of the "Messianic Christian" movement in the 1960s. There was one employee who was Catholic, and after almost a year of hearing him greet this man as "Rabbi" I inquired, he told me he was the Pastor of a Messianic church. One day as I was looking at the section of Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish books, he approached me, asking if I was a Messianic Jew. I replied that I was raised in a Sephardic family, and that I am now a Catholic, and when In Pasadena go to the Latin Mass at a parish locally, and when visiting family in the San Bernardino area I go to a Byzantine Catholic parish. At first, he was flustered and appeared angry, but I kept on the conversation, saying I've heard you referred to as Rabbi, how is it that you are shopping and paying for things with cash on the Sabbath? His response was that he was a "Messianic Rabbi" as the conversation progressed it became clear that his command of Hebrew was limited as was his understanding of Judaism. It would seem that he and a few others who were founders of the Messianic Jewish movement were mostly raised non-religious Jews, in secular modernist homes, became Christian through Protestant evangelization or marriage to Protestant women. While they did incorporate a minimum of Jewish practices in their new Protestant lives, because of questions by their new co-religionists, most knew little, and over time learned a bit more here and there, mostly from attending Fuller Seminary, (Judaism through Evangelical Protestant eyes) According to him most of his congregation were raised Protestant who were attracted to the ritual aspect of Judaism but did not want to convert to Judaism or be circumcised. So while as Dr. C mentioned Messianic Jews as being Jewish converts, it would seem many congregations are from Secular Jewish converts, but the majority are Protestants who are attracted by a misguided interest in Ritual.

Thank you for this. We are watching just a few days after Pascha. I have read and reread in the last few days the prologue of the Gospel of Saint John which is read at the Paschal Divine Liturgy. AND, for some reason, (a blessing from the Lord i must believe..) i have had a hard time with those words. Thank you for helping me HEAR what i have read and heard for years.. long before i was received into the Orthodox Church. I understand them more than ever before because of your words in the first hour. I could read that nothing was made with THE WORD.. BUT somehow i had trouble with it. I see now that i had not seen St. John's explaining more fully WHO created the world which we read about in Genesis..I am a bit ashamed, but so happy to understand.. Thank you. Everything you are saying seems excellent. Have already forwarded it..

'm enjoying this talk a lot, and I do understand that the path of going too much into theology or of discussing directly the mysteries might have it's dangers, but people like Jay Dyer, (who I think the lecturer is criticizing around 1h 50') are converting a lot of people to Orthodoxy, and them to this kind of content.

This is for Eugenia, I am a Greek Orthodox (born and raised) I’m in Orange County California, I loved your video and will be watching more as I learned a lot even though I was raised and #1 issue o have with the Greek orthodox the church the priest do not teach us so we know our orthodoxy, also our Church has changed 2015 the Archbishop of Constinople meet with the Pope and all the other so called religious ( Hindu omg they have 40k + gods, Muslims etc and that we are all ONE) and our church followed all that the government wanted for COVID that was against our Apostolic Traditions! Do you can’t say we are only ones that have kept it …. Miind you I will always be a Eastern Orthodox I was married to a Muslim and would not changed and my children baptized on Eastern Orthodox but our church has changed the archbishops also majority sold themselves off like Gerasimos in San Francisco. Hopefully you will make a video on those issues. God Bless and May Our Lord JESUS CHRIST always be with us …… WE SURELY NEED HIM NOW. Oh and what is the issue with our church not Speaking about the REVELATION ????? So many Greek Orthodox a have no clue about this

At 02:18:30 I can really relate to the gentleman asking that question. My family has some Pentecostals and Calvinists. The Pentecostals and Calvinist aren't as open and really like to debate and basically said I was joining a pagan religion when I told them I was converting to Orthodoxy.

Good talk, thanks! After "looking for the early Church" I converted to Catholicism from Baptist and got hammered with Augustine this and Augustine that for several years (by the priest-Catholic people are very loving and kind for the most part. The priest was mean to everybody). Who was Augustine? So I started researching. This led me to Orthodoxy. I still haven't converted (it's a little embarrassing to convert twice) but I know the original Church, the only one, Holy, catholic and Apostolic Church, is the Orthodox Church. I still don't have the phrenomia ( I tend to pedantically correct errors and am not all that loving) but I'm on the Way. Justin Martyr was from the first century, not the 700's. He wrote the description of the Eucharist in the Church "service" in 150 AD. And here is a history, if you like Romanides, of the Frankish takeover of the Latin church around the 800's, when Charlemagne was crowned by Pope Leo. The Franks (a Germanic Tribe) were heretics and eventually replaced the old Roman Bishops and Pope with Frankish military men to serve as bishops. You bring up many exciting point, however, is there an "Orthodox Morality". I was looking for a book on moral theology from an Orthodox perspective. I couldn't find anything.

Recommend you interview Georgina Constantinou (sp?) PhD to learn about Christian Orthodoxy . I believe you would find it interesting.

I think a huge reason they lump Catholic and Orthodox together also is because both honor and pray to Mary and the saints, and that to them is heretical. They insist that we worshipping them like"gods".

I used to say Catholicism has intelligence and Orthodoxy has wisdom. Now I know better words. Orthodoxy has the apostolic phronema and Catholicism has philosophy.

Thank you for having uploaded this lecture. Though I still have one major misunderstanding. If sin is not an offense to God, why do we ask him for his mercy? And why is there a Hell if it's not a punishment for our lack of repentance from the offenses made to God?

I came to faith in Protestantism 3 years ago, and am now converting to Orthodoxy. I occasionally talk with the leader of that Protestant group and I notice very clearly how he has this particular guilt-based mindset, which ironically he keeps projecting onto Orthodoxy, because he's so stuck in this mode of guilt and punishment that he can't imagine a Christianity that doesn't deal with it. But every time I try to point out that it's his westernized frame of mind that makes him think that way, he argues that there are many types of Protestantism so I can't generalize it. I can't get him to notice that the guilt-punishment paradigm really is a universal mode of thinking in Protestantism, inherited from Roman-Catholicism. The only exceptions that I know of are the groups that are so liberal that they are practically atheists. It's also rather ironic that he thinks that pointing out how Protestants believe all sorts of different things is the way to get me back. That's exactly what convinced me to switch.

Question: How do the Orthodox reconcile the wisdom of Saints like Gregory of Nyssa, who believed in universal salvation, with this claim that all the Fathers taught Eternal Conscious Torment?

I think that the eating of the apple question does take on the idea that it was the woman's mindset (phronema) that caused her to be tempted. So I don't think it was very off subject, just very sensitive for a woman to admit possibly ?

Yes, Western Christians need to allow more room for mystery. We have lots to learn from the East. But it goes both ways. The early Church didn't avoid defining doctrinal statements- what about the Nicene Creed? The Fathers used Greek philosophical reasoning to solve doctrinal problems, both deductive and inductive. Catholic theology is a living tradition that balances insights from theologians, popular devotion and the Magisterium. In contrast, the Orthodox churches, lacking a magisterial element, cannot address developments such as artificial contraception and in vitro fertilization in a coherent way. Dr. Constantinou acknowledges that the Orthodox liturgy as celebrated now probably differs from that of St Paul. Therefore, Orthodox Christianity has changed. And it has also changed in other ways. For instance, many of the Eastern Fathers attest to the authority of the Bishop of Rome to resolve disputes which many Orthodox Christians now deny. Similarly, several Eastern Fathers affirmed the Immaculate Conception of the Theotokos. For instance, St. John Damascene said: “O most blessed loins of Joachim from which came forth a spotless seed! Oh glorious womb of Anne in which a most holy offspring grew!” (Homily 1). Yet since the Catholic Church confirmed the Immaculate Conception, many Orthodox Christians have turned against this aspect of tradition. Why? Regarding unity, there is a patchwork of dioceses across the US so that Greek Orthodox, Antiochian and Russian Orthodox jurisdictions overlap, with the faithful sometimes moving from one to the other. How is that unity? The variety of spiritualities in the Catholic Church is a sign of life. Did God create one species of life or many? Did he make all people alike or with great variety? In the same way, God gives a variety of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11). Rediscovering the Jewish roots of our faith is a way to affirm, not deny, the work of Christ. On the contrary, it is a great mystery to see how God is bringing Jews and Christians closer together as we approach the Parousia. Some Orthodox Christians may find it harder to see this work of the Holy Spirit because they fixate on what God has done in the past. Ultimately, we need each other. A Short Story of the Antichrist by Vladimir Soloviev covers this ground insightfully. Let's continue learning more about our faith from each other, avoiding the trap that we have nothing more to comprehend.

I'm 45 and also Greek Orthodox, I remember they would tell me oh ya the one with the crazy rituals, I would always tell them the Bible and everything I was taught was from when Jesus gave the Apostles and taught in my language, so I think you have it wrong.
