Part 1 of 3 - Morocco, Algeria, and the Sahara desert ....... three friends confronting middle age decide to see the world and the great sweep of people that inhabit it.
An ebook account of the highlights of these journeys ("What the Hell Are We Doing Here!" - narrative and 180 photos) is available from Amazon (www.amazon.com/...) and other ebookstores.
A 4-part video series "Morocco to Mongolia" with highlights from all of the group's eleven journeys - from one end of Africa to the other and back, and then through the Middle East and Central Asia to India, China, Mongolia, and Siberia - is also available on RU-vid.

Oh man I want to do this one day. If only they built Land Rovers like this still! Thank you guys for showing us the way and what's possible!

What an awesome experience it must have been. Even to put together a group of six people with the same goals and spirit of adventure is quite rare. On top of it, they show incredible driving and sustenance skills. The narrator's matter-of-fact storytelling is quite enjoyable as well.

...yep...you lads DID IT...this is the way to see a lot of the Sahara. I did IT in a VW '73 camper ,staying to the hard tops and hard gravel..tho we did get stuck but with no sand ladders we had English lads pull us out. We came in from Tunisia...down thru Ghardaia, Quaglia, El Golea and out thru Bechar to Morocco. We spent the entire winter in those 3 countries in '75. Loved Algeria.... Best experience of my life ! Wife and I ...alone................................

A fantastic video. Thanks for posting. I done a similar trip in 1993 down from London to Dar-Es -Salaam.Down the west coast to Nouakchott and then across the centre of Africa. Your video brings back memories.

The Land Rovers were 1993 2.5 litre diesel turbo tdi models. Our first journey was in 1993, followed by ten further journeys through to 2002. The vehicles were eventually sold to an adventure tourism company in Ulan Bator, Mongolia - where they may well still be operating..

Watching in November, 2022. I did more or less the same trip in 1988. I got a bit of dysentery and spent a night in hospital in Tamanrasset, quite the experience and the story still gets told to this day. Great to see the footage, brings back lots of memories.

We were all lucky - we were there in 1993/4, not long after you. An unforgettable adventure, but almost certainly too dangerous now with ISIS and others taking control after Algeria.

Mate.... Paradise defined is taking a landrover exactly where they're supposed to go. Good work, and you've made me insanely jealous.

Enjoyed watching your 3 part videos..... from someone who has also made a similar journey. In 1975, myself, my wife, and 7 year old son hitchhiked across Africa. we started on a freighter in NY bound for Casablanca and traveled through Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Bangui into Zaire, 3 days on the riverboat from Lisla, then from Kisangani to Goma, Rwanda, Tanzania, to Nairobi. We took rides where we could find them. The crossing of log bridges made me remember the travels across Zaire. We settled and got jobs in Nairobi and stayed for 20 months. I am working currently on a coffee table book of this family affair across the beautiful continent of Africa.

What a wonderful experience - particularly for a 7 year old. No question Africa gets into your blood! My wife and I still go back every two or three years (but rather more sedately, 80 is now closer than 70). Best of luck with completing your book - if you haven't seen it you might be interested in a quick peek at ours at www.amazon.com/Doing-Sahara-Central-Africa-Rover-ebook/dp/B0049H93OY/ .

Fantastic stuff. I'm taking my BMW M2 from the UK to Pretoria, SA next April. Google Maps found a route straight through the Sahara and it looks like a decent road now so should be a lot of fun 😊

it wasn't all that safe when we did the trip, but certainly a lot more dangerous in the central Sahara over the last few years. Understand route through Mauritania is still OK though. Such wonderful places to visit, can only hope free travel does become possible again eventually ....

Not at all. We sold them in Ulan Bataar in Mongolia for a solid roll of US$ notes to be used for Gobi Desert trips! (Just back in New Zealand yesterday from driving the very attractive coast road from San Francisco to LA - we are more sedate in our travelling now!)

I'm enjoying the videos. Did you end up putting limited-slip diffs in the 110s? I've had Land Rovers (discos and a '74 s3 88), and I was always surprised that so many fans of the marque didn't install such valuable tools. Detroit truetracs were my choice -- a gear-driven lsd like a quaife.

No - we were Land Rover users rather than techno wizards - they were simply our means of transport (and served us extremely well). Glad you are enjoying our videos.
