Hello Art-family,
There is a 1 hour version on the technical concepts to this approach on my patreon. For this video I wanted to talk about the differences between gouache and acrylic paint for a quick sketching medium. Both have their pros and cons. In the end I think I prefer gouache but that is likely because I have more experience with the medium.
Thanks for watching. Happy sketching!

I find acrylics work well with a Masterson Stay wet palette, small Handy one even for plein air. Acrylics can be used for much larger works than gouache. Love both mediums, especially in a sketchbook. There IS a learning curve to both. And for acrylics, I keep brushes in a wet paper towel until washing. Your videos and work are excellent!

Nice to hear your thoughts on these two. The need to always clean brushes is what took me from acrylic to oils and gouache. With oils I just drop my brushes in a tray of safflower oil. Zero cleaning involved and the brushes last forever.

Very cool- I will have to look into that.

I love love using matte varnish in my acrylics. Gives it that lovely "chalky" look like gouache. I've also been digging into the Flashe paint which is a vinyl binder...and dries matte. Awesome stuff.

I'm glad i came across your video. Years ago I was comfortable with acrylic, but after a long time of not painting at all I got back into it through watercolor. Tonight I tried gouache for the first time and was quite surprised by how different it was from watercolor. I agree, I think it's much easier to get into gouache from an acrylic background.

As someone who learned how to paint with acrylics and only started with gouache this year, this was very interesting to watch & I would agree with basically everything you said :D

I absolutely love both of these mediums i just finished a painting with acrylic yesterday so perfect timing ahah, i actually don't like working with acryla gouache though but i cant quite put my finger on why i did about four or five sittings with them and they just never stuck with me but id be excited to see how you feel about them. Wonderful to see someone elses views about the two mediums!!

The great thing on acrylic is that you can paint on ANY surface without any fear it will flock, break, corrode, etc... Acrylcis is trong enough that you could in theory remove the surface after the paint is dry and the painting would still hold. The price is the annoying drying patterns

This was interesting to me. I have some Gouache I want to start trying more of, but the only real painting I've done has been with watercolor, not that I would ever say I have a background in watercolor because I'm still trying to figure it out. But the idea of thinking of gouache from a standpoint of acrylic vs watercolor seems to make sense. I feel like the few times I've tried using it I also used it like watercolor. In fact I think the yellow ocher in my watercolor tin is actually gouache not watercolor. I was pretty confused early on about it haha.

I started painting with watercolor, then "graduated" to acrylic, and eventually oils. Gouache happened somewhere in the middle of all of that, and my preferred paints are gouache and oils lately, although I've found myself this year going back to watercolor and acrylic. I specifically tried Golden's OPEN Acrylic line, which has a retardant in it to keep them wet for longer periods. I need to keep working with them, because I was initially interested in using acrylic and oils out plein air painting, covering the first layers like you said with acrylic and then going in with oils. I think the issue is that open acrylics actually stayed open too long and I struggled to get oils on top right away because they stayed wet. In that way they were similar to oils. If you ever tried them I wonder what you'd make of it. It's an interesting medium. I was going to ask did you say that you treat your paper before painting in gouache? I've heard of watercolor gesso and similar treatments and I've wondered about such things. I usually just put paint straight to paper with gouache at least.

I usually use watercolor paper or illustration board which is often already “sized” or treated. I find it works okay without having sized paper as long as you get to the layering fast so that you don’t lose a lot of the control. You can’t wash as cleanly and well in the beginning. Not necessarily a bad thing. Could make for some cool textures :)

@@JaredCullum I forgot about paper sizing! I’m not sure I’ve ever used unsized paper to be honest!

With the cheaper gouache 😀 water seems to reduce its opaqueness. So you need to use it neat, or with v little water. But gouache is sold in tiny little tubes compared to acrylic. And acrylic can be mixed with flow medium whereas gouache really doesn’t seem to flow. So you need to use a lot if it and suck up a small tube in no time. And cheap white gouache is awful stuff.

Does anyone know the difference between black gouache and black watercolor? Black gouache is quite a bit cheaper.
@Escherlife

Something to watch out for with acrylics…..if you water it down to more than 30% water, the binder will not work properly and you may find that it begins to flake and peel after a period of time. It would be a shame for that to happen, so be careful with your washes 😊

Hi Scott. What an unkind thing to post on a strangers videos. I can’t imagine speaking to anyone that way. I’m pretty clear that my videos are sharing a process of growth. Not all are advice. I’m a an illustrator but have painted for years. I’m sure you’ll find videos from painters you respect elsewhere.
