Acrylic Painting of a White Horse in Snow - Time Lapse - Artist Timothy Stanford
"Snow Day" - 11x14” - Acrylic on Canvas -
It’s been a while since I’ve done any animal paintings, so I wanted to try another. This piece was inspired by all the snow we’ve had here recently. At first, I created a more detailed background, but when it detracted from the horse’s form and movement, I simplified it. This inspired me to also simplify the color palette and give the illusion that the horse was a part of the snow itself. I really enjoyed accentuating that illusion and may try a similar piece with water in the future.

Hi Timothy,well then...that was such a pleasure watching this video...and i was looking for `watercolour horse painting`!...thank god youtube came up with this. i may take up acrylics now...i`ve dabbled in the medium before and enjoyed it...like oils yet like watercolour( use very little water to loosen the paint?)..you make such a simple subject come to life...it`s all about the light isn`t it..brilliant painting...and a fantastic easy to navigate website to ! thank you for sharing your talent.all the best!

Thank you so much, Mark. I use a decent amount of water to help the paint flow, especially when using the heavy body acrylics. Probably a 50/50 mix.

Such a smooth blend! ❤️‍🔥 Please do tell how you did it? I can see you’ve used the fan brush and layered the canvas twice. But in the second layer it seems you’ve used water? It’s really efficient 👍🏼

Thank you. Yes the blending is done with a stiff bristle fan brush. If the paint gets too thick I’ll add a little water but for the most part I avoid it to keep the paint as opaque as possible. Also I make sure the 1st layer is dry before I add the second blend layer, and that the brush is cleaned well between each color.

This is very beautiful; I just can’t take my eyes off! May I ask - what size canvas did you use, what other brushes did you use, and what other colours did you use besides white, sky blue, and violet? Because it seems like you used some kind of browns - is that necessary? Would really appreciate your response. Thank you.

I used an 11x14” canvas (you can always find this in the description). The brushes are shown at time 1:04. I never give exact sizes since every brand has their own numbering system so in general from left to right… - Large stiff bristle fan brush (for background) - Medium stiff bristle flat brush (for snow) - Small stiff bristle flat brush (for horse and snow) - Small fine bristle spotter (for mane, tail, detail work) - Large stiff bristle flat brush (for snow) - Large stiff bristle round brush (for snow) The only colors you need are shown with the brushes. The brown was something I tried but didn’t like. I cover it with blue later in the video

Those were some test colors that I decided to cover over later in the painting. The mix was: - titanium white, cadmium orange, & Dioxazine purple.

Haha no. If you look close there’s a faint graphite draft over the paint. I used a 1 inch grid for this one to make sure I got the proportions close.

Sure. I used pencil. I would definitely not use marker because it would eventually bleed back through the acrylic paint.
