@@FredFuchs77 then again, iago is at often times viewed as a hypocrite. I'd still argue that he is 100% white, but it's fair enough for him to be interpreted black
You guys fail to see the historical context. Moors are islamic north Africans, drawn to a poor light from europe by the invasion of iberia still recent. He could be a black man, yet not a moor. Othello was seen to be a converted christian, but others will act in prejudice to convert in this period. Racism is not the racism we see today in this play. The Mediterranean was one of the most ethnically diverse areas of old europe. The many years of colonial exploitation and triangle trade and slavery are void here.
Lucian Msamati is perfect here. You can read into the casting of a black actor as Iago and how that affects the dynamic between him and Othello, but even without that subtext this is just a joyfully evil performance.
Absolutely incredible, just finished the whole play. Huge congratulations to everyone involved, this was a truly breathtaking production. Special mention to the incredible actors who play Emilia, Iago and Roderigo ❤️ Thank you
The first act of the play is set in Venice, that’s the literal reason. As for the analytical, I am not so sure… maybe they are floating in sea of lies (or that’s what I would say to my high school english teacher if I couldn’t come up with some other bullshit).
Not necessarily. Making Iago black adds to the irony that is racism, where we hate on someone who looks different, but in reality they're just like us.
