With an emphasis on performance more than lecturing, Brian Cutler Actors Studio [Burbank, CA] has refined a teaching process that trains actors to get out, smash the audition, and get the role. Simplicity is the key and creating working professionals in film and television is the goal. Never cold or intimidating, the learning environment is intimate, unpredictable, and tuned to cultivate spontaneous and instinctive creativity. More than joining a class, students at the Brian Cutler Actors Studio become a part of a network. The studio serves as a family away from family, and the teachers are one element of a dynamic support system. It’s about basic instinct and authentic moments. It’s about unrestricted, on-camera organic performance. It’s about getting the job and living as a professional actor in the real world. Most of all, the Brian Cutler Actors Studio is all about the students. In-person and Zoom classes available.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

What I think would add a layer of depth to the beginning of this scene is if they treated the conversation as though they were navigating a mine field, remembering how much is at risk to their relationship in this moment, and how every single thing they say has the potential to destroy everything they've built together. There should be two conflicts here: One between the two characters, and the other within each character as they struggle between saying what they want to say the way they want to say it, and saying what they want to say the way their partner will accept hearing it.

The actors seem to have a lot of nervous energy, because they are focused. I feel movement would give the tension an outlet and allow for body language to come into play. We're not in a rehearsal space and we're not on a set. It's a very private discussion and yet the blocking is like we're in a cafe, etc. The actors are struggling to be realistic in an artificial setting. The scene's emotions are too big to not allow movement. The limited camera movement is also restrictive and with the blocking, both are causing the performances to be stylized.

agreed, especially with actors that have less experience, it's hard to harness and channel energy into your character when you're not allowed to move even an inch

Great acting - his anger and frustration and confusion rising up from a denial/numbness in the very beginning of the scene. And her logical calmness attempting to take control of the situation, but, then, when she breaks down, the role of calming the situation shifts to him. It's such a complicated dynamic that the two actors totally express - very talented - totally pulled into the scene - like watching real life rather than two actors acting. Very inspirational 👏 😃

That is a really good performance!. It conveys a lot of deep feeling and is very touching. I wish everyone here a Merry Christmas, peace and health. I thank the Film Courage team for their time, love, diligence and work they put into these videos. I wish you many new ideas, ideal implementation conditions and success. I and the whole community have already learned a lot here, but it's far from enough! Regular videos encourage continuous learning. Thanks a lot for this.

They're good but I would like to see more exaggeration, gesticulation and expression. This is the art of acting. It has to somewhat of a caricature of reality. Within reason, of course...
