Action for Silk Stream River Action Day at Chandos Park with Thames21 & Chandos Park Community Group

Recently I took part in an Action for Silk Stream River Action Day at Chandos Park in Edgware. Action for Silk Stream is "A project to help tackle the effects of climate change by making space for water, reducing flooding and improving water quality in the Silk Stream catchment for the benefit of communities and the environment”. (Both total rainfall and intense rainfall events are expected to increase in the next few years due to climate change. Winters are becoming warmer and wetter, with more extreme rainfall events during the summer in London. 1.25 million people live and work in areas of tidal and fluvial flood risk (www.thames21.org.uk/community-modelling)).
During the course of the day we removed litter and fencing, and also cleared vegetation. This is in preparation for when diggers arrive in the Spring to move the channel of the stream. We also got our waders on and cleared out as much litter as possible from the water and from the river banks.
www.thames21.org.uk/the-action-for-silk-stream-project
I met so many people that day every one of whom threw themselves enthusiastically into the task of clearing up the river and cutting down the fencing. Find out how you can get involved below.
Action for Silk Stream events are normally on the last Thursday of the month and the next event will be over in Watling Park (just 5 minutes away from Chandos). Thames21 will be there on January 25th. book.plinth.org.uk/e/o5WH132MQYWZCmkwNhV4
To find out how you can get involved in more community volunteer events with Thames21, go to :-
www.thames21.org.uk/get-involved-2/
Action for Silk Stream is a partnership project, led by Harrow and Barnet Councils with involvement from Thames21, Thames Water, Environment Agency, Greater London Authority, Canal and River Trust, Brent Catchment Partnership, Friends of the Silk Stream Resident Group, Silk Stream Flood Action Group and others. This project is funded by Defra as part of the £150 million Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme which is managed by the Environment Agency to develop and test new approaches to resilience tailored to local communities.
The project will explore opportunities to build new wetlands, restore stretches of river and create new areas of natural drainage to increase flood resilience as well as create a host of other benefits, including improved water quality, beautiful public spaces that will boost health and wellbeing and much needed habitat for wildlife.

It starts with one person who is motivated to make things better -- and who can encourage others to help -- and then you have a group, and have some weight with local authorities to get approvals, some publicity, more volunteers and then end up with projects like this that help the environment *AND* are things that increase the enjoyment that the locals get from parks, rivers, nature -- and Nicola, you helping to shine a light on the people and activities, is a big help as well!

Hey Nicola, Happy New Year to you 🎉 I truly hope this project works and has been professionally surveyed and scoped. This looks like the Brook that partly run around my childhood park in Barking, East London. It took rain water and flowed into the man made highsided gravel pit designed in the late 40's early 50's for flood relief. Sadly someone (guessing the Local Authority) re-routed the Brook, created a new park landscape for flooding (what the gravel pit lake was already successfully doing).....it didn't and still doesn't have a purpose and simply caused the Brook to dry in places during hot spells.....it stayed full during the baking summer of 76, before it was tampered with for 'climate change' sake. I lived in Woodford Green when the Roding was diverted for similar reasons and flooded 100's upon 100's of houses during heavy rainfall.....pumping it away was impossible as there was nowhere to send it....I was in charge at local fire station at the time, and knew people in the community whose houses were affected. Check out Beau Miles on YT, and see his videos on river rerouting in and around Sydney...a trip to Oz to meet him would be superb for you. Well done for getting involved, you are a Legend Stay Safe as Always ✨️🙏🫶☮️🕊☯️🧡

I remember going on walks with my dad in the 70s along the river Trent and watching them dredging it each year. I read that the Trent been dredged for the first time in over 20 year, and only a small section. The water ways are like local council neglecting their duties.

Hi Nicola! A few weeks ago you responded to a message of mine on your channel, which related to how I was planning on holding off on watching your videos until I was in the hospital with my wife as she went in for an induced birth. I wanted something relaxing to watch as I waited with her! Well I am pleased to report that I am now watching this video with my 17-day-old daughter in my arms. She is healthy and happy. But absolutely refuses to sleep in her cot right now 😆 - mama is also doing great! Take care!

This reminds me a bit of when I was very active with a geocaching group. Every year, there times all over that are devoted to “Cache in, Trash out”. As parks, waterways and the like are ideal areas for geocaching, the community aspect of many groups of that type is to involve themselves in large clean-up days. This sure brought back my memories of those days!

Sweet! The creek I grew up playing in is still a lousy concrete ditch with 7' walls straight up. Handles quite a flood tho. was necessary as the neighborhoods around it would be under a lake by now. Kinda place where the ivy is poison and so are the vipers.

The first thing in flood prevention is to remove the old mattresses from the watercourse! (Also remove stout re-usable garden waste bags: these block culvert grilles with 100% efficiency.) One way to store excess water, is to contrive a way of storing the energy inherent in the flood. One of many very clever hydrological engagement systems built by the medieval monks of Hitchin Priory (most of which were dismantled in the 19th and 20th centuries by less godly minds) was a simple pond with banked-up sides and two rills, one delivering water to the pond and one taking it away, both close together. If the flow coming into the pond was fast enough, it would flow all the way round the pond before going out the exit rill. This made the whole mass of water in the pond rotate _and rise up the banks_ till it was higher than the water coming in. The amount of water going out didn't really change, until the water coming in slowed down, slowing the rotating mass of water and allowing it to fall back down the sloped banks and out of the pond. I had to stand in pouring rain to see how this worked (there was still a gun shop just across the road at the time, which sold me a waterproof hat) and I had great trouble explaining how it was working to my physics teacher (who lived on top of a hill), but one of my English teachers (who lived just up the road from the pond) understood it very readily! In the days when water voles were common in the Priory grounds, I used to notice how they were using the physics of the river Hiz to reduce the amount of work they had to do in their daily lives. They would ride a rill downstream in one direction, find some food and then ride the other rill downstream in the opposite direction to take the food home to their burrow.

Nicola,I would like to share a story of a creek,a creek,unnamed,but we called it ‘Nardini creek’after the wealthy Nardini family,whose land this creek flowed through. As teenagers,we would hang out in this heavily wooded bend in the creek. We were teenagers,we would smoke,build little fires and cook bacon and beans,the Nardinis,they turned a blind eye,as they most likely were up to much worse things when they were our age! Now,that little bend in the creek still exists. But jus a short way downstream,the Nardinis built this monstrosity of a concrete structure,straight as an arrow,it funnels the creek ever so unnaturally in a desired direction,it looks like something off of Hoover Dam! I do not know why they did this,but it is a terrible scar,a concrete beast,eyesore galore. My point is,there is a right way to care for a creek,your good friends are doing it right. Ahh,but the mighty Nardinis,they did it wrong. It’s frankenstinian.😞
@charlesperez9976
@charlesperez9976 6 месяцев назад
Gosh,here is a happier Nardini creek story,to make you smile. One day,we were hanging out at the bend in the creek,smoking cigarettes that one of the guys stole from his dad,and all of a sudden,3 trout came splashing upstream,struggling,making the craziest racket in the water! One of the guys jumped up,in anticipation of grabbing one of the fish,to cook up on our makeshift fire! I stopped him. I explained that these trout were traveling upstream to a spawning ground,to lay eggs,or deposit sperm to fertilize said eggs,so that there will be more trout! This blew their minds🤣 The ecosystem exists all around us,it is up to US to learn about it,and embrace it,lest we hungrily grab a fish,because it’s easy to grab.

Interesting that Silk Stream River Action Day at Chandos Park in Edgware a project to help tackle the effects of climate change by rechanneling the stream through the park to stop flooding downstream Coincides with the Some 259 warnings of expected flooding in England on Thursday evening, with two covering Wales. The heavy rainfall caused multiple train routes to close, with Great Western Railway advising passengers not to travel and South Western Railway expecting disruption to continue until "at least the end of the day". Nottinghamshire County Council declared a major incident due to rising river levels along the River Trent, which was expected to peak on Thursday evening or early on Friday. The council has warned levels could come close to those recorded in the year 2000 - the highest on record. A floating nightclub sank in central London as Storm Henk culminated in a final deluge of rain on Thursday.
