In today's scripture readings, we are called to reflect on the brevity of life and our eternal purpose. These passages encourage us to live with wisdom and devotion, aligning our lives with God's will.
In the first reading, Peter reminds us of the impermanence of the world. He urges us to lead holy and godly lives as we await the day of the Lord, which will come like a thief. Knowing that everything around us will eventually be dissolved, Peter asks us to consider how we should live. He advises us to be diligent, to be found by Christ at peace, without spot or blemish, and to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
This message calls us to examine our priorities and actions. Are we investing in things that have eternal value? Are we cultivating our relationship with God and growing in His grace?
Psalm further reflects on the fleeting nature of human life compared to the eternity of God. The psalmist prays for God's mercy and wisdom, asking Him to teach us to number our days aright so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. It is a call to recognize our dependence on God and to seek His favor and guidance in all that we do.
In the Gospel reading, Jesus is confronted with a question about paying taxes to Caesar. His answer, "Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's," teaches us about the balance between our earthly responsibilities and our ultimate allegiance to God. We are reminded that while we fulfill our duties in this world, our highest devotion must always be to God.
These readings together emphasize the need for a life of integrity, where our actions reflect our faith and our hope in God's promises. We are called to live wisely, aware of the transient nature of our earthly existence, and to devote ourselves wholly to God's purposes.
As we go about our daily lives, let us remember to give to God what belongs to Him; our hearts, our time, and our devotion. Let us seek His wisdom and strive to grow in grace, living in a way that honors Him and prepares us for His eternal kingdom.
Let us pray: Lord, teach us to number our days and to live wisely. Help us to grow in Your grace and to live lives that are pleasing to You. May we fulfill our earthly duties with integrity and always keep our hearts devoted to You. Amen.
