Active imagination is a practice developed by Swiss psychologist Carl Jung that facilitates a dialogue between consciousness and the unconscious. This can be accomplished in many ways and, in fact, it should be pursued in an individual way, using whatever medium (art, movement, writing, music) works best for the individual. For this reason, that is, because the technique should arise from and out of the individual, Jung was very reluctant to systematize active imagination as a technique.
