democracynow.org - When Democracy Now! was in St. Louis to report on Ferguson October protests, our producer Aaron Maté spoke with Grey's Anatomy actor and activist, Jesse Williams, who joined thousands in calling for justice in the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. Activists in Ferguson have defied a militarized crackdown and taken to the streets to call for the arrest of police officer Darren Wilson, who shot Brown. Their efforts have made Ferguson the ground zero for the movement against police brutality and racial bias.

Beautiful soul; am not one to be impressed by celebrity, but am well pleased to have taken time to listen to Jesse Williams. He appears to be sincerely caring and well informed; and not just another 'pretty face' working the 'screen facades' pumped out of network tv. Has substance, like most hardworking actors, sadly, who're compelled to to work myriad jobs outside career choice before finding success in the theater and/or film. "You're only as good as you last show," in show biz. So am delighted Jesse used his tv celebrity status to shine light on the horrific 'reality' of racism and police violence in Ferguson. Gotta love the empowerment of celebrity that can 'move mountains' for minorities forced by prejudice to live on the fringes of society, yes? Bless your astute presence to the cause, Jesse Williams; "BRAVO!"

I support the peaceful protesters in Ferguson and elsewhere. Thank you Jesse Williams for lending your support and using your platform to make a difference overall. Racial Profiling and Police Brutality are very serious issues!

Forgive if I don't know the exact terminology. With the "rules of engagement" being what they were the day Mike Brown was shot and killed by this police officer, I just don't see a conviction of him where he's going to have to do a significant time behind bars. Clearly, what happened was wrong; but to fix, we need to concentrate on getting these "rules of engagement" changed, not just putting one cop in prison. Sure, let's try to put him in jail, but let's also address how cops are allowed to interact with citizens who are, as this actor Jesse Williams said, "...just walking down the street...". I think Mike Brown was walking down the street in a manner that showed anybody who wanted to look his way that his testicles were huge. I don't believe the witness who said that they were just crossing the street. I think that both Mike Brown and his friend were walking down the middle of the street for quite awhile, for dozens of yards, for hundreds of feet. When I happen along in my three thousand pound vehicle, and I'm not doing what I usually do, which is driving on the sidewalk, but I'm driving in the street instead, and I have huge testicles by the way, and when there's a pedestrian walking down the middle of the street, guess who wins? I run him over. Why? Because I have bigger testes. Cops were invented to try to work out these differences among citizens before they become fatal. Cops happen along to these "shows of strength" and say to the pedestrian walking for a long time in the middle of the street: "OK, great. You have huge round things down there. Take you and your round mounds of greatness and walk them over to the sidewalk so that this other guy doesn't run you over." And then if you change direction at that point, and make a beeline for the sidewalk, and get there in a timely fashion--five or ten seconds--that cop won't shoot you. There has to be a way to move the pedestrians on over to the sidewalk without gunplay. Yes, we need to change the rules of engagement to save lives, but why is it wrong for a cop to remind a pedestrian that sidewalks are for pedestrians, and streets are for motor vehicles and bicycles? Yes, that cop swore at Mike Brown to get the eff out of the street. He was 18 years old. I learned a long time before I was 18 that you don't go walking down the middle of the street unless you're in a parade.

Don't forget the reported assault on a police officer. I'm sorry to say, but if you are 6'3 300 Ibs then the rules work different for you. your size and weight make a difference in any use of force. I'd also like to point out how easily Mr. Browns behavior has been ignored or forgiven by people protesting. I have yet to hear one one person that is protesting condemn his actions. We can debate or discuss the actions of the Officer, but no matter what strong arm robbery (and the alleged assault on a Officer) is not something a "civil rights" icon does. Is this really the role model the black community is propagating? If so, then I fear that MLK's vision is back sliding into chaos.

typheran1 Don't bring MLK into this. I don't think he fought for black people to be vilified either, but you won't talk about that will you? There was no robbery, have you forgotten that the shopkeeper didn't REPORT it? And no evidence has been released proving that the cop was injured in any way. He got murdered, pure & simple. Hopefully, that cop will PAY, sooner rather than later.

This kind of shit only happens in America. I've never heard of anyone being ordered off the street anywhere, but I guess that's normal when you live in a police state. I mean, USA is a country where you can get fined for "JAYWALKING", it's unbelievable how stupidity can reign supreme in this country of yours. The problem with USA is its culture (or lack thereof, perhaps) . Once you treat (a certain group) citizens like criminals before they've actually done anything, you can pretty much justify anything. If two cops (good or bad) were killed for every innocent person losing his or hers life at the hands of the police, things would change rather quickly. As of now, USA as an apartheid state, no better than Israel & South Africa during colonial times. It's (USA) a complete *disgrace* to humanity.

typheran1 America shot MLK Jr. If he was alive today maybe people would care but they don't. Because he's dead. Malcolm X, dead. Huey Newton, shot dead. Medgar Evers, shot dead. Really, you think whether you can dirty Mike Brown's name matters when it comes to a community being pissed off about innocent men being shot dead. America had a chance with Trayvon Martin. He bought his skittle and Iced Tea and America still vilified him. It is that very vilifying that is being contested. If America doesn't stop bullshitting like they don't remember the Rodney King 5, and keeps allowing Jamal Crawfords and Oscar Grants, I'm afraid where this may go next. This isn't politics. It's lives. America is known for being blindly stupid and stubborn but this is not the issue to continue that trend.
