First of all: “The media” is not an entity. It goes without saying that fundamentalists do give arsenal to the likes of those epitomised by 'Clit Eastward' maven of Hollywood( the tentpole, feature-film maestro) - of course it's ludicrously, maliciously, and viciously exaggeration. Doesn't that away from the fact that wild Philosophical distinction is there.

I am never one for investigating politics, but it is really eye opening to see what people of the Muslim faith have to go through on a day to day basis. Riz has always been an inspiration to me since I saw him in Nightcrawler, and I do believe that what he is doing is truly using his platform and his voice for good. Lady Parts was a really important aspect of my journey in conveting to islam simply by showing realistic portrayls of myslim women, and how as muslims we dont have to be perfect. I'm an Indian American of Hindu background, raised atheist by my parents. Maybe because I was raised so far away from everything, and in such a predominately white area, I could never afford to see the differences between the faiths. Our representation then was slight, so. When I saw a muslim character on screen, that was still me, even if it wasn’t. I just appreciated those overlaps I couldn't get elsewhere, the default understandings I didn't have to explain. I saw parents making the same hand gestures, or food I ate at home, or more broadly just characters who knew the same minority struggles or the same basic rules (like yep, you're going to drop everything to go serve tea when your parents friends are in town, and no, you don't call them by their names lol). So selfishly, when I witness the strides so many muslim actors and writers and artists are making these days, I feel bolstered by it and supported by it and grateful for it. So much of muslim representation also feels like my own, and in these last ten years especially, it’s been so weird to see other people insistent on gaslighting me into thinking otherwise. Anyway, I completely agree with what Riz was saying about the three stages--and I was so eager for that third stage for most of my life, especially when I could only relate to bits and pieces of the rest. And now, thanks to media like We Are Lady Parts, Polite Society, Ramy... I'm more enlivened and excited than I've ever been. The layers of background, culture, faith folded into an identity without taking it over. To have characters be characters without these small differences being treated like a contradiction. It's so encouraging and exciting to see. The muslim faith in particular has been so badly distorted in media for so long, so flattened, and it's tempting to take decades to try to undo that in that stage 2 lol. But there are so many brilliant and strong artists now who aren't talking to that stale narrative, but just breaking it altogether to make something more honest and more creative. Even Ramy--people can insist it's about the muslim faith, and of course it is. But the show never questions Islam; it questions Ramy. His struggles with faith don't revolve around the difficulty or qualities of Islam, but the difficulty of a flawed person struggling to live up to their faith. And in that way, it's so broad. Yet at the same time, one of my favorite scenes in the show was watching Ramy washing his feet in the mosque, there was something so routine and intimate in getting to see these rituals. And it's so fun to see these relatable stories colored in with details that outsiders like me might be unfamiliar with. I think that's the great achievement of these stage 4 stories haha. Anyway, this is very long, I wrote a whole letter. But Riz encapsulated his faith in a beautiful way, as usual. "It means being grateful everyday." Well, this girl's grateful for you, Riz. And I'm running off to see Mogul Mowgli now.

@@HassaanQ You clearly didn't understand my argument. It doesn't matter whether it is a country you are from, whether you look a certain way or what your "ancestral" roots are. Why should i have to act a certain way? Just because of where my ancestors are from which can never truly be ascertained anyway because everyone if you go back far enough is not truly one race Also Kumail Nanjiani fully acknowledges where he is from. He didn't change his name to something" more "white" sounding like Ben Kingsley or Freddie Mercury did. He never denied the fact that he is Pakistani. He even made a movie about his experiences as muslim man being in love with a white American woman.

@@HassaanQ Sadly a lot of minority actors have no choice but to go with the flow otherwise they won't get any work. You could argue what he is doing is not changing the stereotype but the alternative to that he never works. and Kumail has bills to pay just like everyone else. The problem is not Kumail doing these stereotypical roles is that these are the only kinds of roles available to him which illustrates the structioneral problems in hollywood which Riz Ahmed is talking about. and the solution to that is to encourage more muslim writers, and directors and for muslims to empower themselves to create their own projects just like Kumail did when he made The Big Sick. Yes he is telling his own life story and he is basically playing himself in the movie but at least he is not playing another characture or stereotype. He is playing a character with actually depth. and he is the lead star. His stand up routine is based on his experiences as a Pakistani muslim. Comedians often draw on their experiences and background in order to entertain.

I really respect Rizwan because he is a proud Muslim even when he is working in big movies in Hollywood. He didnt abandoned his religion for his career. which is hard specially when your career is in Hollywood. He walked the hard road for holding his faith and doing what he love. Many Muslim actors or comedian who are now household name in Hollywood have become atheists to fit in. Perhaps thats why many Muslim people dont want to pursue this career to not lose their faith. But Rizwan showed that it is possible to keep both.

This is everything islam stands AGAINST if it was for females or MALES. Islam is manners, walking humbly on the streets, not doing anything that hurts us (smocking, drinking alcohol). As an atheist I'd like to add to this. It's not just fictional depictions of Muslims but real life as well. During the 2000s we were inundated with fears about suicide bombings in the media, and as a teenager, hearing the fear get hyped up while seeing angry aggressive Muslim groups at home and abroad baying for blood was an unnerving thing to witness. What made it worse was that the Muslims brought forward on TV were usually either terrorist supporters, or inept community leaders who often came across as pompous, self-righteous, who sometimes subtly seemed to support Islamist terrorism and always were blaming everyone else for everything. This left me a very negative impression of Muslims, made worse when a distant cousin of mine was murdered by ISIS. As an adult however, I did a community woodland project at work with a group of Muslim boys and the local imam. They were some of the nicest kids I'd ever encountered. And with the Imam - a very jovial and warm-hearted chatterbox - came the local Muslim women who cooked some spicy rice and onions for us, and it occurred to me that this was probably common practice in Muslim communities like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan etc, that perhaps it was common for such places for the locals to greet guests like this. (I could be wrong about this idk, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was true.) Another change of pace was when I began a casual intimate relationship with a Muslim girl (still ongoing), a very beautiful and talkative girl, very independent regarding her sexuality (like the girl in ladyparts here but without the face veils) but also very kind and understanding and willing to listen to me when I talked about being bullied at work. It struck me how blatant the contrast was between the warm-hearted, generous and friendly people I'd encountered, and the yahoos and weirdos wheeled out onto the media.

They did so, and after they had recovered from their ailment (became healthy) they turned renegades (reverted from Islam) and killed the shepherd of the camels and took the camels away. The Prophet sent (some people) in their pursuit and so they were (caught and) brought, and the Prophets ordered that their hands and legs should be cut off and that their eyes should be branded with heated pieces of iron, and that their cut hands and legs should not be cauterized, till they die.
