One of my favorite vids you've made. For a long time, I've been saying that the boldest choice is to just be yourself. I've also advised actors to read the breakdown only after they've worked on the scene. Now, I just need to follow my own advice more often.

This resonates..... I got an EcoCast for a show I submitted on a whim, mainly because the breakdown was looking for people who were under 5'7 and can play 14-15; I'm 5'5 and well past 14-15. My manager was a little confused by my decision to even submit to that project but I got called in. IRONICALLY a week or so later, my manager got me an EcoCast where the breakdown was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE, where on paper they were looking for someone who read late 50s-60s. Go figure.

Yeah, I've seen it countless times that the breakdown doesn't match me, or at our taping service, we'll see a diverse set of actors coming in and NONE of them match the breakdown.

My last audition, I loosely followed the script, because it was a scenario within what they wrote to do. It felt better. I love watching it.

whats difficult for me is knowing what everyone else is gonna do. what if i have a viewpoint or choice that i think is unique but it ends up being the most common one🥲

Our viewpoint is that you never concern yourself with anyone else. Your fingerprints are unique in the same way that your life experiences make your perspective unique. What makes an actor look like they’re making the “common” choice is when they act. Plain and simple. If the role is a cop, for example, the trap is to try to approximate some commonly held image of a cop. “Trying” to be a cop. “Acting” like a cop. What makes your performance unique is letting your DNA infuse with the character. Don’t try to fit into the cop uniform. Make the cop uniform conform to your skin. I know I’m making it sound simple or trivial. It’s not. It’s the single biggest hurdle and actor has to get over. It’s why we teach our 4-day Sam Christensen workshop. It takes some deep, intentional work to figure this thing out
