Ralph Fiennes (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) and Christoph Waltz (“Big Eyes”) discuss working with fastidious directors like Wes Anderson and Quentin Tarantino
They're probably two of the most humble and awkwardly sweet actors working today and they play some of the most terrifying characters to ever be put on screen.
Underrated gem I hope you know of...1995, Strange Days. Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Tom Sizemore, Juliette Lewis. James Cameron wrote but Katheryn Bigelowe directed. Ridiculously ahead of its time.
because he sees that Waltz is intimidated. he knows that his portrayal of Landa can't hold a candle to Goeth, Waltz knows this too. and that the movie IB is generally shit.
@@trawlins396 because guys flirt with each other a lot and i don't think actors are that homophobic that they wouldn't flirt with each other anyway. it's sexy to many women for men to flirt with each other especially these two as they're physically beautiful men.
Gentlemen?! Haha only Waltz. Ralph is sweet and gorgeous, however, while on a flight to represent an AIDS campaign, had random sex with a flight attendant whom eventually sued him bc she actually thought he had aids😂.
Seeing Christoph smile like this in an interview is such a breath of fresh air. It's obvious how much he doesn't like some of the more 'juvenile' interviewers he's been exposed to
Some of those interviews I just feel bad for him. Especially the late night talk shows. He's way too cultured and mature and CLASSY for an interviewer that's not on his level.
@@trawlins396 please be quiet. do you realise that those talk shows hosts are also those things that you describe? their shows cater to a specific audience. 'classy'. he's just a bloke.
+Rakesh Gopinath I don't think anyone in the American or English film industry considers him underrated - quite the opposite really. He's one of the best actors of his or any generation.
Tarantino movies draw more attention to themselves than movies by other directors (for example Wes Anderson), which doesn't mean that Tarantino is the better director.
I want a movie with Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz and Javier Bardem 🎬😩😍 ! Like they're 3 psychopaths and they're friends : directed by Quentin Tarantino or Xavier Dolan .
What I like about this particular episode is that, both men taking part in the conversation are highly intelligent and utterly classical. Although, you might say, they have aged decently and thus became so prominent, but that's not true, because they have been like this since their childhood.
Two men whose on-screen personas tend to be quite eccentric and, well, over-the-top, but who by all accounts are in reality really soft-spoken and introspective minds.
He's definitely bored in most of those interviews. He's too cultured and mature for most big name talk shows. They're for the generic , common type of actor like Ashton Kutcher and Brad Pitt.
I'd say that this might be rooted in his cultural background. In German speaking countries we usually don't do small talks that often. In fact, plenty of people find such conversations superficial and meaningless and thus often consider such talks as a waste of time and energy. In more intimate situations like here in this direct back and forth interaction, we prefer conversations with deeper thoughts and meaning that at times require to defend certain statements or set them into relation and context which often is missing in typical small talk where the answer given is more or less pointless as the audience is more interested in a punch line than for the actual background of the story.
I would've loved to watch another hour of these two talking. I absolutely LOVE the way that especially Ralph Fiennes formulates an idea into a few sentences or considers something he's curious about & turns it into words & then g e n t l y gives it a little push out into a little elbow room in the conversation to see what happens. That kind of gentle, hesitant, idiosyncratic way of being in the world is so dismissed & discouraged in our daily life. It's all about aggressive pushy energy & dominating conversations & talking talking talking over others without even listening. I'm a much more hesitant pondering gentle sort of considerer, so it's fun to see Ralph Fiennes do the same. I think it's also conducive to unexpected conversations that usually turn out to be the most interesting ones.
both are so great so fantastic! but Christoph got his two oscars and ralph is still waiting for his! thats unfair- he sould have had the oscar for his role in Schindlers List....
+Mayan Idiot Ralph is great. Christoph hasn't been great outside Tarantino's films. I can't believe he has 2 Academy awards, and actors like gary Oldman, Ian Mckellen and Ralph Fiennes don't have any.
Sada sivan I agree on IB. But not on Django Unchained, Leo was even better than him and he wasn't even nominated. And of the nominees that year, Alan Arkin and Philip Seymour Hoffman deserved the award more in my opinion.
This reminds me of those old tv shows with interviews that were actually deep and intelligent instead of the pure entertaining done in modern late night shows. So amazing talks like these are still orchestrated
Like Dick Cavett. It used to be about intelligent conversation now it's about entertainment and being "Twitterable". All of th actors seem to be giving pre written answers.
OMGGGGGGGGGG Ralph Fiennes is so amazing. I just want to see a whole series of Ralph Fiennes paired with various actors/actresses. Sit him down with Holly Hunter, Jake Gyllenhaal, reunite him with Kristen Scott-Thomas & on & on.
Looking back on these older interviews.... the second I saw Ralph Fiennes and Christoph Waltz together I clicked as fast as possible! These two are icons and something about them is so similar to each other whilst being so individualistic. I would love to see them acting together!!!
Thank you for uploading this! I couldn't find it on the full version Variety youtube page. I love how these two are so humble that they keep trying to ask each other questions, instead of stealing the spotlight. Character actors are the best!
And I love you too, and I love you even more, and I LOVE you most when you do this thing and I am the only who loves the other the most, no it's ME that loves YOU the most.
Intelligent conversation & the magic of people who listen to converse. I’ll bet the majority of humanity has never experienced this simple pleasure. Possibly our greatest loss as a society.
Easy pick for two of my favorite actors, can’t wait to see Waltz do more but Ralph’s career is so ballsy and different through the decades. Crazy the same guy who played a horrible Nazi is the same guy who played a gang boss in In Bruges, wonderful.
Well considering the villainous roles he has played brillantly, you're fear of him makes sense. Also, depending on if you are an American or not, his accent can mentally be differed as scary. This is because of the many western world movie villains have German/Austrian accents. It is very interesting to dive deeper into why we might fear certain things.
It's very interesting coming straight from JGL and Paul Dano's session where they talk extensively about how closely they worked with the people they were portraying to this one where Cristoph and Ralph kept their distance from those they portrayed.
I think Christoph Waltz is such a good actor that even in an unscripted interview with a fellow actor he is still able to act convincingly, meaning I'm not quite convinced that he isn't acting even during the interview.
I just found out about this since I love to watch artists interviews! And I find this concept very good! It looks elegant and comfortable for them; I think it's a really good idea!
